I just started tanking with my 70 pally after having trouble with adds on my druid. I need to know if I should use Rank 1 Avengers Shield to pull and Rank 1 Consecration while tanking. Since I am controlling all the guys it may be best to use rank 1. If some experienced pally tanks can comment I would appreciate it.
Oh.. I checked out all the pally tank gear guides and was wondering if gearing with 5 man tanking gear would allow me to tank heroics. Right now I am just above 10k health with 490 defense. This is all from gear I had in my bank. I always have been a healing pally so these items were picked up when nobody needed them.

holy shield and consecration do holy damage, and it's your holy damage that keeps the mobs on you, i've never tried to use rank 1 anything, i just pop the wisdom judgement on the mobs if i start getting low on mana...but the more holy damage you do to a mob the more he's going to stay on you...regular melee damage dosen't do anything for a pally...
i've had times where i would tank 3 mobs and after we down the first i would forget to make the pally swing and he would still hold aggro due to the consecration build up just standing there lol

I use rank 1 in normal dungeons, max rank in heroics. In normals, I'm barely taking damage, so I don't have the mana to support max rank. In heroics, I still get hit enough to keep my mana up, and having solid threat so that I can burn targets down without pulling aggro is a priority. You should be fine in heroics as long as you put a bit of work into finding blue gear. The Felsteel head/legs/gloves with +12 stam gems is a great start. If you load up with that kind of stuff (there are some nice quest rewards along those lines in Netherstorm/SMV), you should be fine for the lower heroics like slave pens.
Note: when you're still wearing blue gear, I'd use max rank in normals as well. You're still taking enough damage to get the mana back from heals.

If needed the 2nd conscreation will be a top rank as well. This is usually more than enough to keep em on your pally.

Maybe I should join a pug kara to try and get some more tanking gear. I read some websites suggesting min stats to do kara. I think the rest of my team is not strong enough for heroics yet. My shamans only have about 350 damage. They can use some upgrades. I plan to try a few more instances and then hit up heroics on my pally to see if its possible. First thing I need to do is run BM with my pally. It was impossible with my druid because I could not attract the adds. Demo wouldnt aggro them. The only way I could aggro them was to damage them. I have run BM with a pally before and they keep all the adds on them with consecration.
My pallys around 280 spell damage right now. The only thing I dont have is the 102.4% total avoidance/blocking is needed to be uncrushable.

Without the avoidance, you won't be able to main tank the bosses (nightbane or prince), but try to get in as an off tank. A pally makes a great OT in kara; you can grab some healing gear (pick up some cheap AH blues like the Essence Focuser) and offheal on fights where you don't need to tank.

Usually in 5-mans 2 max rank cons will hold aggro throughout the pull w/ a shield toss (Burst some TPS on the first target). After you burst the first target I can typically run with SoW on the rest of the targets to regen some mana off hits. Even if DPS rips the mob will typically be dead before it gets near the DPS'ers.

I will edit this to tell you my pally tank methods when I am not drunk... My only 70 so far was a pally tank, and I have run so many instances... Underbog, shatter halls... ect.. (non heroic) No CC at all.. Just me tanking everything... No Kara gear.. just DS3 gear... I have always kept agro except from a fully kara geared balanced druid and a chain lighting happy shaman.... I always wore about my pug healer tho.... :whistling:
All I can say is a well trained palladin tank can do anything.
