View Full Version : Ellay: Looking for a bit of guidance :)

Well, my girls are finally pretty much geared (10k hp, 9k mana, 840 spell damage, 21% base crit, 350 res) and I'm doing 5's seriously now vice farming points off of some friend's 3's teams. I'm looking for some basic direction on strategy that has worked for you if you feel comfortable sharing. To begin with, what I'm doing now:
Blade's Edge: Set up totem farm at one end of the bridge, maybe a bit more towards the center.
Nagrand: Usually set up shop towards the center of the arena. My experience was that staying right next to a pillar allowed the other side to LoS me much easier than if I forced them to come out to me.
Lordaeron: Ugh, my least favorite. Usually we would go to the far right side and set up the farm. This way they have the smallest possible angle to LoS us over.
Totem farm consists of 4x staggered Tremor, 4x Grounding, 3x Poison, 1x Mana, 4x Searing. I go with Water shield as with only 9k mana I've had mana become an issue in many games. Target selection is usually Dps and then healers, with Hunters and Warriors being my first big targets. I'm using a Shaman healer who's in full S2 with a smattering of S3.
To be honest I'm floundering in the mid-1500's. I could say that part of that is the gear gap (Every team we've fought has been at least full S2) but I don't want to cop out; I'm looking for strategy help :) Do you have any suggestions? Are there any nifty things you've discovered that've made a big difference in your competitiveness? How do you go about target selection? What do you do against a team that can heal through LB/LB/CL chaining (We ran into a Hunter/Priest/Druid/Warlock/Shaman team that was easily able to heal through our full damage output ugh)?
In any case, much thanks in advance!
P.S. Of course anyone with insight is more than welcome to provide input. I wasn't trying to make this personal :)

I've had company over the past couple of days, I'm planning on making a movie specifically for dual-boxers to show in game footage strategy of the "sweet spots" of where to be on each map - with lots of commentary instead of music :)
Also your spell damage is high enough no one should be able to heal through your damage, sounds like the opposing shaman was minimizing your damage with grounding totem.
Nagrand
http://img72.imageshack.us/img72/5981/nagrandtd9.jpg
#1 spot is against caster heavy teams, utilizing the pillar to minimize their burst potential.
#2 spot is against melee heavy teams, forcing them to come to you, making them unable to LoS you.
Blade's Edge
http://img72.imageshack.us/img72/1585/bladesedgexn6.jpg
The blue outline shows the optimal areas to stand, the direct middle is bad because they can just mess wit you on the bottom throwing spells, but on both sides forces them to come up top and duke it out :) also they cannot LoS you, only jump off which means they left their team behind.
I couldn't find a good picture of Ruins of Lordaeron, so it'll have to wait until the movie :)

Thanks Ellay!! I'm pretty much in the same boat as Mosg2 in terms of ranking. Also ran into a transfer druid on my server that says he started out with your shamans when you first started up....Poochies ? Anyway, he was giving me advice on your tactics.

Thanks so much Ellay! That's even better than what I was looking for hehe.
My other big question is (if you have time, hope you have fun with friends/inlaws/family) what is the order that you try and kill people in? Do you go for DPS or healers first? Whoever is handy? I noticed in your first video that you swap targets a lot--Is that just to screw with the healers?
In any case, thanks again so much for helping out :)

I think Ellay commented this in response to the "who first" question in the past:
Fire Mage
Frost Mage/ Ele Shaman
Hunter
Ret Paladin / Warrior / Enhancement Shaman
Priest / Non Cheat Death Rogue
Warlock / Cheat Death Rogue
Paladin / Resto Shaman / Druid
As far as switching targets, I do it as well. I find that it's great to hit a target once with a LB and then if it goes LoS or retreats, switch to someone closer/better. This will generally start the healer on the 1st target and make killing the second easier. I will not chase someone, generally speaking. (Learned that the hard way).
Anyhow, I'm sure Ellay will chime in, but that's what he said his kill order was at one point in time. A couple encounters with a fire mage and you'll share his opinion...

Arena Notes ('http://dual-boxing.com/forums/index.php?page=Thread&postID=44443&highlight=dizz')
Perhaps we should put this on a "4x shammy + 1 healer arena notes" wiki page.

Ya we should definitely start putting this stuff on the wiki :)
I think the video will clear up a lot of the questions.
As for Fire Mages, they are straight up bad ( not in a good way) if your playing one. I had 3 all of Season 1 and 2. Against our comp though, if they have dragon's breath they are insane. It's those odd ball comps that never make a good rating that have a shot at beating us easily heh.
hey mosg looks like your gear should be good enough to start gaining rank above the 1500's, once you work the kinks out of your strategy =P
i remember back when aellie first released his first video of 2k+, and i think your gear is better than his was at the time. I'd say you probably just need more practice =D
I am lookin forward to when i hit 70 to try arenas

Way back in the early days of my team (like, a month ago *grin*), melee folks used to be the real problem. Now that everyone isn't quite so squishy, it's fire mages that I really dread. Dragon's breath, blast wave, etc etc... awful stuff!

Yeah, but rewatching Ellay's first vid showcases how unprepared people were for multiboxing, relatively. Nobody knew exactly what was gonna happen at first, hehe. Also, every team I've faced so far that's over 1450 rating has been in AT LEAST full S2 and many of them in full S3...
All together, I think it just comes down to strat. For the Shaman team at least, the difference between S1 and S3 isn't HUGE. I'll get it worked out eventually ;)

You may get bored, but my poor 1500ish team might replay it over and over again!!
Ellay, do you plan to release this video to the public? Or will this be a Dual-boxing member exclusive kind of thing. I would imagine your info would be just as valuable to our opponents as it would be to us. :) No idea how you'd do it (even if you wanted to) but thought I'd ask.
Can't wait to see it!
While we wait, I'd love to hear your opinions on our different healer options. I'm using a Priest (Disc) now with good Arena gear. Granted, we've only played one week, and my guys were at 400 spell damage. >.< But yesterday I got my maces and enchanted them... now they're each around 600 which is alot better, but I have alot of BGs ahead of me still.
So what are the pros/cons of the different healer classes?

Been thinking about your video Ellay. Maybe it's something you only offer to members who can show (through armory) that they have 4-5 multiboxed toons (the only folks your video will be valuable to) and are actively running a 5v5 arena group. Easy for me to say, because I'd qualify. But in the name of info-control, I'd try to only make it available to those who are ready to use it for multiboxing.
Simply have the Clown bury it on the site with a simply password protected page. Or, require us to submit an app, then email us a link to download it.
Just a few thoughts for ya.

That would be so much extra work to review a ton of ppl to see if they qualify to see the video though. I def wouldnt want ppl knowing multiboxing secrets though since its a very fragile thing in arena. If people actually took the time to look up these forums then wed be screwed as it is. Maybe this forums needs a verified multiboxer section lol

BoomThis would be a good idea IMO. As multiboxers, we get a lot of public scrutiny, and it would be best if we keep our "trade secrets" of how to pwn Arena Teams in closed quarters.
So it seems the community has spoken, this thread can end.
The result: Boom and Boyl will get the video hand delivered by exotic dancers (with hearts of gold of course). If Boom and Boyl decide down the road, that other people need to see the video, we MIGHT release it. Thank you all for your obvious support through these hard times. We love you.

I have a feeling even simple things like what macros we have to react to certain situations can be vastly different thus effecting our individual playstyle. Seeing someone else arena and arena well might give those of us not doing well some insight on how we might change our setups to be more effective.
8.5 mins worth, if you have it online, or to download somewhere, I know a 'to be made' arena team that can really benefit from this. Not to mention I will ban wilbur from IRC (and everybody wants that, righttt?)

Perhaps I missed something, but all I saw was Boom thinking it might be an idea to have some kind of 'who gets to see the video list' and now your all rattling off your armory details. I thnik there are plenty of us who would be very interested to watch Ellays video and dont have 5 Shaman at 70 in a average 1500 rated team. So to your idea Boom, I say fuck that for a joke.
I honestly doubt many people are going to study the video and discover the ultimate weakness to the Shaman Multibox. I mean if you just sit down and think about it, I am certian there are plenty of ways to beat a multiboxer - I doubt a video is going to make it come crashing down for everyone. Also we should be happy to put a video out there and say hey look - this is how we do it, you guys have no excuse for losing - learn to adapt.
So to end my rant here, just post the film like every other film gets posted - getting up on our high horses and being elitist about who gets to see something is kind of lame.

I *thought* it was a joke but seeing all the replies I wasn't sure and its so easy to take the Internet in the wrong context.
I would almost think a "PvP" section to the forums would be good with an Arena and Battleground forum to discuss strategies with say a Before you post thread rule ie

Then have everyone discuss and someone can sumamrize put on Wiki etc :/

I apologize if my idea offended ya bud. I was simply bringing up the thought, which I still think is valid. But just because the thought is valid, it doesn't mean I'm throwing my hat into it.
The validity comes from the realization that alot of 4xshammy Arena teams are suddenly facing. We're losing. Bad. While Ellay posts 75+game winning streaks. We're quick to blame this on gear, and for good reason. But we've started to see several 4xS teams head in with very respectable gear, and they're still losing.
So either we all suck (very possible) or Ellay has stumbled upon something truly impressive, and therefore truly valuable.
There are alot of things of value that are kept secret. If you DIDNT respond with "F@## that for a joke", I'd be worried it wasn't worth keeping a secret. The very fact that you chose to respond with profanity says we're on to something.
But personally, I think the spirit of these forums would be violated if we DID keep Ellay's video a secret. Logic would tell you to keep multiboxing a secret as long as you can. But instead, we as a community have chosen to post on these forums, the official forums, and even post videos on You Tube... the result? Blizz finally backs us up in a very public way. Score one for open source. :)
To to recap, I offered the suggestion to Ellay, being it's his video, because there were valid reasons behind it. Your response confirms that. But now that we're at the end, I'm glad Ellay is choosing to post it publicly. I'm REALLY interested in the thread that starts here to discuss the video. That should be fun.
I just hope it doesn't debut on the official PvP forums for a bit, but I'm not holding my breath.

Seriously... Ellay. This is AWESOME so far.
Here's some takeaways for me so far:
* I am not purging enough. Question: do 4xPurges strip off 8 total buffs, or do they overlap/cancel like a grounding totem can sometimes eat multiple spells?
* Seems like you often purge before DPSing. Is this the case, or did the video just highlight some special cases.
* I am OK at positioning, but my patience needs work... Video reinforces that creeping towards them is bad bad bad.
* I have been practicing alt-turning independently of my main for a while, and I need to incorporate that better.
* Nagrand rogue-baiting was a great suggestion.
* Ghost wolf at beginning to prevent sap!! I already knew this from being a solo shaman, but somehow I was losing this knowledge when we've been 4xShaman in arenas.
Probably some more I've left out. Thanks again, can't wait for the full version. This was awesome, awesome, awesome!!

Ellay,
I didn't think it was boring at all. You confirmed several things that I thought were good ideas, but wasn't really sure of. You also pointed out a few things that I have struggled with. If I sit in one place for very long, I start to feel like I should be doing something. Patience patience patience.
I have two major problems that I haven't found good solutions for so far. My gear has increased 10 fold in the last two weeks, so one of these may not be as big of a problem as it used to be. First is mages spamming arcane explosion while bouncing around inside my group or worse yet multiple mages doing this. We had two games this week against 5 mage teams. 1 or 2 would stand back and blizzard while 3 rushed in and arcane explosioned like mad. Any tips to counter this?
Second (this one may not be nearly as big of an issue now as I've increased my HP/Armor/Resilince dramatically in the last two weeks) is rogue(s) getting in amongst my guys and bladefurying the living crap out of me while I'm trying to shock/nova/magma them down.
Part of my strategy has been to use EM/NS early to try to kill one person quickly. I see that this is probably not a good idea. I've used it numerous times only to have a mage/paladin/rogue use their "oh shit" abilities to prevent the kill. It looks like waiting a bit to make sure you've got them low enough so that a EM/NS chain lightning is enough to gib them instead of just drop them low enough for a 4xfrost shock or 4x lighting bolt volley is enough to kill them; thus giving them a chance to bubble/iceblock/vanish and escape death.
Anyway, thanks for posting what you have done so far and I look forward to hearing more from you and seeing more tips.

Ellay you are a god....
I had gone with 2 wins so far in about 40 matches.... and just kept resetting my team to at least get some points.
I watch the vid, get some confidence, go in with my own prot pally and win my 1st 3.... Time to invite my holy pally mate who is very dissapointed in my achievements so far.... He has connection problems in the evening, but we go on to get a 7-3 record for the evening. My best ever......
I've done a lot of pvp this weekend, so my skills had improved, but some great pointers, especially around the patience, ghost wolf and purging, have made my game 100% better. I'm still PVE spec, and one of my shammie is resto spec too, so overall I'm absolutely delighted with the results....
I even managed to win one game as the palla DC'd half way through with 2 of mine (both oom), vs 2 50% health rogues, ghost wolf, run around, manatide, blast a bit got one down, ghost wolf and wait for regen, rebuff watershield, slowly slowly does it, but he went down in the end.... was a real rush.
Real props for sharing your knowledge.
Cheers

Tips for Paladins,
Always use Crusader Aura when the doors open until you dismount.
Use Blessing of Light
Don't be afraid to pop BoP or Bubble too early, the first 10-20 seconds of a fight is usually the most crucial if they go all out.

Thnx, kanelHehe Kanel, you have to admit you did get a bit ratty when we lost 6 in a row the other day. But you're pretty good in there anyway, keep me up nicely.
Looking forward to a steadily improving rating over the next few weeks.

Tips for Paladins,
Always use Crusader Aura when the doors open until you dismount.
Use Blessing of Light
Don't be afraid to pop BoP or Bubble too early, the first 10-20 seconds of a fight is usually the most crucial if they go all out.Blessing of Light on everyone? Or just the pally...?
We've been using Kings on everyone for the extra HP.

hmm if you don't want to use BoL on everyone I would suggest ur pally has kings on him and ur clones have light. from what i saw in the vid, it looks like what mostly happens at high end is that a rogue or one cc class goes after ur pally to prevent him form healing and the rest go for you to try and interrupt you as much as pos. then when ur pally pops his bubble they all turn on you (which they should), so to maintain the highest possible hps from ur pallies heals BoL would benefit you more then kings. Please correct me if I'm wrong ellay.
If that is the case however, BoK on ur pally for the extra stam, intell and lesser other stats, BoL on ur shammies for healing.

My pally partner is decent geared and experienced, so can normally keep himself up for at least 40 seconds. This leaves me free to choose targets and nuke at will. They go down even quicker.

Bloodlust (same as the alliance ability, "Heroism") is a L70 shaman spell that gives 30% haste for 40seconds. It's usable in arena and has a 10min cooldown. All shaman get these regardless of their race.
Blood Fury is an Orc Racial ability that gives 143 spell damage (and 282 attack power) for 15 seconds. Its downside is that it reduces all healing effects on you by 50% (it's like you Mortal Strike yourself). The ability has a 2min cooldown. The spell damage is an obvious upside... but the healing debuff is also pretty significant.
On a 4xShaman setup, here's what that 143 spell damage means for me:
Assuming a baseline of 600 Spell Damage (and the hidden +55 Totem of the Void bonus on LB/CL), a target with 394 resilience, and a two-spell cast sequence of 1.) Lightning Bolt 2.) 4xEM+NS+Chain Lightning, I get the following:
Min Damage: 12,876
Avg Damage: 13,504 (using 1,000 salvos, Monte Carlo type analysis)
Add in the Blood Fury to the mix and that increases spell damage to 743 (+55 for TotV). Same resilience and cast sequence:
Min Damage: 13,918
Avg Damage: 14,650
What you can see here is that little ole 143 spell damage bonus increases my LB - 4xEM+NS+CL combo by roughly 1,100 points. It's also going to increase the expected value of subsequent LB volleys by ~550 for the remainder of its time. However, 15 seconds is a lot of time to be debuffed.
To dig a little deeper into arena theorycrafting... That debuff probably won't matter to at least 1 of your team, because they're going to be MS or Wounding poison debuffed significantly. But it may make healing the whole rest of your team much harder in the face of incoming AoE damage.
Finally, it's a useful racial in that it can acutally overwrite wound poisons and then when it wears off, you don't maintain any debuff.

Hai thar
Me and Kyudo have been doing 30 arenas since we got the tactics video, the first week we got 7-3, next went rly bad and we ended up with like 4-6 im not 100% sure, but this week im quite happy with the results, after 10 games we got 9 win 1 loss :) now we are at about 1460 rating, raised like 120 rating today :):) i almost pity one of the teams we faced, we won against em like 5 times :S
I just gotta say thnx again for the video of tactics Ellay :) its great, thnx ^^
