I run the following macro on my main, and have my other 4 assist when using them all.
#showtooltip
/cast lightning bolt
/startattack

This way if there is allot of congestion and im just solo'ing instance or bgs I can auto select the nearest target, sometimes though I get a target that is dead somehow and it will not at that point get the next target. Is there a way I can put a check in there to targetnearest enemy if the target is dead? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

My follow macro has a /cleartarget, i use /focus 'mymainchar' on alts and /clearfocus on my main and my damage spells are all as follows:

/cast [target=focustarget, nodead, harm, exists] Spell ; Spell

So all my alts always have their target cleared, while I can swap main without worrying about it. Just need to press my follow button whenever I swap and have the old main target something to clear their target if for whatever reason I have too.

Might help you? *shrug*

Why don't you use focus macros. I only have to target things on my main never on my alts. What ever I cast they will cast at that target without having to select them.
