im torn between 2 groups comps I mainly want to solo level in dungeons.
Warrior, Priest, Warlock, Mage, Mage most likely all undead
or
Paladin, Paladin, Warlock, Mage, Mage most likely all human
please help with your thoughts

why 2 mages vs 2 warlocks (2 warlocks have stacking benefits, not mages, afaik; but then the mage are probably higher dps)

I have the same problem
But for me it depends if the "battle shout" is viable for aoe tanking (for producing aoe treat)
If not I'm going double paladin aswell

I'm planning to play the first group you listed, primarily because I want a warrior main available for (solo) raiding later.
I'm attracted to 2x mage partly for 2x sheep. Am I wrong to think this will make dungeons (while on the low-side of their level range) materially easier?
(I'm planning to set focus targets while marking enemies, and have "CC @focus" broadcast on a keybind.)
Mages seem to provide top-notch options for CC, focus-fire, and AOE, and thus 3 distinct ways to address an encounter.

What stacking benefits did you have in mind for Warlocks?
I can think of some for Frost Mages: Frostbite+Shatter, Winter's Chill (Freeze+Crit frozen, +2-10% Crit). But I don't see any similar mechanics for Warlocks (assuming Curse of Agony > Curse of Shadows with just 2 warlocks).
Perhaps, there is significant added/stacking utility in: DOTs vs direct damage, multiple pets (imp+other, 2x void for offtanking), 2x soul stone?
In particular I'm curious about DOTs vs DD when boxing 3+ casters. Do you experienced boxers find this makes things smoother?
(e.g. mostly insta-casts so higher mobility, spam DPS button on GCD, fewer wasted casts on a dying target, etc)

You can have an imp out for the sta buff and another pet (like sub for CC), you can also have one spend the point into enhanced healtstones and use those points elsewhere on the other lock etc...
ps: there is no focus in classic so far

I originally was going for 3 mages for the simplicity of it but saw a lot of post talking about the benefits of having one lock in the party. with summons and soul stones and pet
the tank healer combo there has been post in favor of both pally tanks vs warrior for groups. and priest vs pally as the healer.
i feel like the 2 pallys might be easier to play? this will also be my first mixed group i have boxed druids, dk's, and hunters but always all 5 the same class.
but being easier doesn't do a lot of good if i cant clear the content.

I'm likely going with the "Paladin, Paladin, Warlock, Mage, Mage most likely all human" option. I think i can make it work pretty well and later use just the Paladin(s) to powerlevel other alts through dungeons like Hobbs back in the day assuming xp works similarly.
