View Full Version : Multiple... so many cores... (5-boxing)

With Matisse and Castle Peak coming up, I was wondering: Are there any benefits associated with having more than 12 cores when 5-boxing? Looks like third gen threadripper might have 24+ cores.

Depends on how many other things you have going on on the PC. Streaming software? YouTube/Netflix/etc.?

I don't think people actually converse about these CPUs by using their code name without first mentioning which chip(s) they're actually referring to, especially on just a standard internet forum, and it's much easier to say something like Ryzen 3000-series and 3rd generation Threadripper (TR3).

As Ugh said, it depends entirely on what you're looking to accomplish.
Looks like third gen threadripper might have 24+ cores.
The current 2nd generation Threadripper 2990WX already has 32C/64T, so I would hope so.

Benefits?
Sure (the games dont have to fight over the same cores).
Each game should have atleast 2 cores (and its 2 hyperthreaded parts) assigned to it. 5 x 2 = 10 cores (20 threads). Then you want the same for the OS. So a 12 core (24 threads), would be awesome for a 5man. If you plan to do more stuff than that, at the same time... get even more cores.
Overclock the cpu aswell and get a nice aio cooler.

Thanks for the feedback, and my apologies for being slightly vague :-)
I guess what I meant to ask is if the WoW client benefits from having more than 2 cores per client. For example, if I have a 24 core processor - can the 5 clients utilize 4 cores per client or is it pretty much the same performance as if they had 2 cores per client?

The old engine uses 80ish % on 1 cpu core, then is able to spread the other 20% on other cores. You could f.ex assign 1 game to 4 cores (8 threads), at 4,2 gz or assign 1 game to 2 cores (4 threads) at 4,6+ gz. The fps improvement could be around 30% on the one with fewer cores, but higher clockspeed.
So it likes few cores, at high overclock, if you want to minmax it.
If you want to buy a huge cpu, and wish to try assign 4 true cores (8 threads) to each game, its possible. It will ofcourse still be a lot better than having a less cpu and having the games fight over the same cores. Let us know how it works out, if you want to give that a go.
Other new games, that is not cpu bound: any decent cpu at 4gz would be plenty. The main fps improvement will be based on the gfx card you got. As in: spend more money on gfx card than cpu, for other games than wow.
