I think that your question is slightly flawed. Currently, it suggests that playing any games at all is considered an addiction. I think that you need to distinguish the amount of gaming that constitutes an "addiction". I do think that some people have an addiction to gaming. Really, its not an addiction until it starts to adversely effect your job/life/family... IMO.

I think when you get to the stage where you are cutting class/taking sickies @ work and/or lying to friends/family so that you can game it has become an addiction.

I think I am on the fringe of addiction. I don't lie to anyone or take days off but I think about doing that every day. :P

EVERYTHING can be considered an addiction.

Addiction -
the state of being enslaved to a habit or practice or to something that is psychologically or physically habit-forming, as narcotics, to such an extent that its cessation causes severe trauma.

So everything can be an addiction... just depends on the person, the habit, and the habit of choice.

lol, mark me down as addicted, when TBC came out i took that week off so i could play :P

BUT! it also keeps me out of trouble, if i could be playing a video game instead of doing drugs hardcore and being a alcholic i'de take the games, well at least in my current mind set...so i look at it as a good thing, and that's what i tell people that see me in my horde hoodie, they are always like "oh you play wow? you must be addicted" and i say "it keeps me out of trouble"

To paraphrase another saying, there are 3 sides to every story: your side, my side and the truth.

I look at it as a fairly efficient use of money as a hobby. To give you an idea of some other hobbies I've puttered around with in the past:

Gun range = $10 entry fee, $10+ in targets, $50+ in ammo, $10 in gas to get there and back (at least) and another $5 in supplies for cleaning the guns when you get home. Still cheaper than boxing WoW.
Club hopping = $100+ per night in drinks, cover charges and gas, easy.
Canoeing = $125+ for transportation, $50 in supplies for the trip, $20 in sunscreen/insect repellant/etc.

VERY easy to spend quite a bit more on ONE-DAY hobbies than I spend in an entire month of multiboxing.

I agree, your poll is a great example of a poor choice of words for a poll. Your bias and opinions should not be taken into account. I.E. The only 2 choices are its bad, or its bad, and other....

I'd say you need a bit of help with your poll first, lol.

Wheres the option that says "It's something I do when I need to relax, or what I do when I have finished all the other things I need to do in real life."

I am with the other crowd.

I am not addicted to games nor do I consider them a poor use of my time. I happen to have limited hobby time and currently prefer to spend that allocation playing games.

I have other time slots allocated the largest of which is work, followed closely by sleep. My remaining time is devoted to my family. that considering I spend about 2 hours every 48 playing games (slightly over 4% of my time) I think that it is a a very reasonable use of my time.

I'm a sex addict. It's my cross to bear. It's a real disease with doctors and medicine and everything! I am NEVER satisfied! It's a curse.

I'm with crowd on this one. You're poll needs to be reworded with more possibilities. Addiction means that you get to the point where you can't focus on other essentials in life and whatever you're addicted to overcomes those things you need to do.

I, like many others, play the game because it's got the best dollar per entertainment value and I've also started five boxing. My wife watches TV (I hate TV anymore). I enjoy motorcycling and four wheeling, but the cost for that is getting out of hand when you talk about costs for maintenance and just getting to where you want to go... runs easily around 100 - 200 bucks a weekend.

You didn't have anything in there about socializing. Many people play the game just to socialize or spend time with friends or family. Just remember that just because you don't do something for a reason, that many others may. I never really understood the time people spent with their kids until I had my own. :)

Everyone does something just to pass time. Gaming in general has been a great thing for me. I played strategy games for the longest time and learned a lot about prioritizing and planning. In WoW, I actually enjoy the money making challenge of the game as well. For the life of me, I can't understand how people are always broke in WoW. I have six level 70s, three or four with epic mounts (my engineering warlock has two) and I currently have around 12000 gold and I don't ever do the dailies. Get a skill, collect some stuff and sell it. How can you not make money. I guess most people just squander it to get some piece with an additional +1 STAM or something. Who knows?

I suggest you reword your poll as follows: '

Do you think gaming is psychologically habit-forming?

A. Yes

B. No

C. Uncertain

You can put me down for A.
