GTX 980 or 1070?

About three weeks ago I bought a 1080ti 11GB founders edition direct from nvidia. And today it finally arrived. Yay!!!

But wait, they sent me the wrong one, they send a GTX 1070. They are very sorry, and I could return it and be on the waiting list, its backordered again. Or if I wanted I could just keep it and they refund the price difference, I decided to keep it.

So I assumed the GTX 1070 6GB is definitely a better card then the GTX 980 4GB and hoping you can tell me it was a good idea and a fine upgrade. Or make fun of me for rash decisions.

1070's are 8GB usually. 6GB cards are the 1060's.

That said, I'd say a 1070 is about on par with a 980Ti (they trade a bit of tit for tat). Comparisons for 980 vs 1070 indicate somewhere around the 25% better mark (all fairly subjective results, but definitely a marked improvement).
So I'd say a step up.

Yes you're correct its an 8GB 1070, I had misread that. Thanks for the input.

I have a 980Ti in my unit and a 1070 in Mom's multiboxing unit and the 1070 seems to have a little more headroom than the 980Ti in DX11/DX12 apps. It also runs a little cooler and draws a little less power. I would put my real-world experience comparing WoW, synthetic benchmarks, and general performance at somewhere around a 5-10% difference at most between the two depending on how many of the current DX12 effects are implemented in the game. Considering they were about the same price when I bought them, it was mostly a wash and would take paying close attention to numbers to notice any real difference.

I dunno... the 1080 Ti is quite sexy. It might be worth the wait to go back on the list.

Aye, I don't disagree. I was looking at synthetics as I haven't been able to compare directly my 980Ti and 1070. It's only a bit of a feel thing.

But then the OP was about an unnamed 980 vs 1070, no Ti involved, and the synthetics between those show a marked difference. A bit more than I'd expect from between a 980 vs 980Ti. I also think the 4K perf on a 1070 is much better.

On the other hand, a 1080Ti would be really nice. Especially after coming up with the goodies to shell out for it. Getting a 1070 would be deflating after the expectation. On the other hand, the return of the cash might be rather welcome.

For $400 more than the 1080ti I could get the Star Wars branded TitanXp. Its the only thing they have in stock.

I was doing OK with the 980, was able to 5 box just fine and 10 box not too bad. I probably didn't have to upgrade and there was a little bit of buyers remorse so I think I will be happy with the 1070 and the extra $300 in my pocket.

But then again BfA could take more resources and I may regret not waiting for the 1080ti.

If you have spare cash just lying around and nothing to spend it on, then go for it, but it's certainly not going to be a $400 increase in performance over the 1080 Ti (it's more like 10%).
