How do I turn off their ability to request to be in the group?

I use jamba and select the decline strangers option under the team settings... same with duels.

I've had lots of people do annoying duel invites over the years but never random group invites. I'm surprised that is a thing.

It has happened maybe 3 times in a couple weeks.... not hugely a problem, but jarring when it happens.... popup, did you want to convert your full team into a raid? etc.

Maybe something to do with the cross realm hopping addon some people use?

I wasn't aware that other people could request to join your group—I don't think that's a thing (outside of the BNet friends thing).

On the other hand, if you try to invite someone into your group when it's full, including re-initiating ISBoxer's invite macro, you will trigger that message. I would imagine this can also happen if you list yourself as a group in the group finder tool with < 5 characters, and without converting to a raid group before hand.

addons could do auto invite very easy /who > /invite PlayerName, on the event when someone joins party spams in party TEXT.

You can right click any group members portrait frame and request to join group.

Reading this, I didn't understand... Why would someone already in your group, request to join the group?

Upon further investigation, it would seem that the invite command (in the right-click unitframe menu) changes to a "request to join group" command when the person targeted is already in a group. This must have been a fairly recent change, because, in the past, trying to "invite" someone who was already in a group would just spit out a message telling you that they were already in a group. In fact, it still does when you use /invite, and no pop-up request to join the group is sent to the other player, even if they're the leader.

As an outsider you can right click any of the group members group you'd like to join.. sorry I confused you ^^

If you use ElvUI, there is an option in the General tab to only accept invites from Friends/Guildies I believe. If you don't, not sure.

I think this was an artifact of the multi-group tagging changes a while ago. I run 5, so I can't recall seeing that. I can see it being a potential issue with <5 though.

The problem is if you have a full group (your team) and someone requests to join the party, then a popup arrives, explaining that if you accept them, then your group will be auto-converted to a raid. The phrasing was unclear in the post where bgarisn said ElvUI handled this, in that I can't tell if they were talking about this feature or normal invites.

It just happened today, after months of it not happening.
