I got whispered a lot from this person today. I found a chinese translation page for gamers, I hope I made sense to this person. Did they think I was a gold farmer?

After this "chat", I put them on ignore. They kept sending me messages, even though I "thought" I explained that I was american and did not understand them.

This is the website I used for the phrases:
http://www.karashur.net/cntrans.html

Does anyone know of any others in case it happens again?

First off Asian or Chinese? Asian isn't a language it's a culture like European or American.

Dumb moment, give me a break. Sheesh. I kid you not I thought they had two different languages. -.-

I've had farmers message me throughout my WoW life, they most likely thought you were "one of them" and were just saying hi or asking to work together possibly, or want to know how your doing that so they can too :)

Yeah, there's 2 forms; Traditional Chinese and Mandarin, that I can think of.

Someone whispers me in Chinese? "I only speak English." if they reply once more I shrug 'em off; if they keep replying, helloooooo /ignore, if they spam, y helo thar mr. rightclick>report spam for a full account ignore

Man, my Chinese is rusty. No, i"m not being sarcastic, I actually learned Chinese back in college. I almost feel like brushing up on my Chineses and finally make that conversation macro for my 3 toons just to screw with other players heads.

It could be:

1. Someone playing another person's account, Chinese and interested in you and doesn't speak English.
2. Someone playing their own account, knows how to speak Chinese and seeing if you are Chinese, gold farming, pling, whatever
3. Someone playing their own account, doesn't know Chinese, only knows a couple of phrases or looking at the same website you are and seeing if you are Chinese, gold farming, pling, whatever

I think it's #3.

Either way, personally, I would've just said, "Sorry, not Chinese" (in English) and moved on.

I'm just too nice... in the off-chance this person wasn't a gold farmer, I wanted to be polite to them. Oh well lol

Follow up note...I'd kinda refrain from replying in Chinese, Online Translators are notoriously bad and that's simply something that can't be changed without human interaction based on emotions and how things are said. Better to just tell 'em you're English-speaking rather than make 'em think you know the language, possibly getting into a Translator war with some griefer trying to be self-righteous and catch a goldfarmer bot.

Besides, English is, stating possible fact rather than assumption/American bias, the most commonly learned language in the world right now; how well it's learned varies, but while learning other languages is optional here, everywhere else tends to learn English(hell Japan has English classes in their normal schools now and integrates it into their language/ads occasionally, usually yielding funny results lol) as a common medium; maybe you'll get lucky and he'll have English as a 2nd language and he'd understand you then :p

In EQ2 we just had a spammer group get around the filter and they spam everyone on the server about once every 3 or 4 hours. Some of the guys there absolutely HATE these guys... and well the made a little game out of trying to get them to talk back.

They found a site with a lot of mandarin insults and such.

For those who dont like the farmers / spammers Here is the link to the thread on Eq2flames ('http://www.eq2flames.com/farmer-s-almanac/7651-talking-spammers.html') talking about it and the link to the site, mind you there is profanity so if your offended by such, dont click.

For exemple, my wife is and she plays wow, without being a farmer.

Also, maybe your name Boo like Bu, common chinese name, and this player thought you are chinese.

I had someone whispering me as well once in Netherstorm while I was farming scryer rep.
A guildmate helped me understand what was being said, in essence I was being told off for interrupting their farming and they did not believe me that I wasnt one of them or able to understand that they were saying when I replied in English.

Funny stuff. At the end of the day, every gold farmer will understand that we are not in the same boat though - when you log off or do something non-farming related. =]

Judging from the screenshot, I agree with Kllrwlf, i.e. it's probably just some guy thinking you are Chinese. Basically the conversation went:

Him: Where you from? I don't know how to say it.
You: I'm sorry.
You: I'm American.
Him: So funny/Laughing my ass off.
Him: I'm British.
You: I'm sorry I don't understand. Goodbye.

Btw Mandarin is the spoken language. Traditional Chinese is the written script, the other form being Simplified Chinese.

I like the names of your toons btw.

Also, maybe your name Boo like Bu, common chinese name, and this player thought you are chinese.I know not all chinese are farmers. This post was not meant to be an insult of any kind. I tried to be polite to him/her because I know not all chinese are farmers, and I try to be nice to everyone and not assume anything about anyone. Had I thought they were a "farmer" they would have been /ignored on the spot.

We have a whole Chinese guild on our server <CHN> @ EU-Boulderfist, they are mostly Chinese students studying in the UK or other EU country, very few of them are actually playing from China or any other Asian country for that matter. They are a top end raiding guild, so they couldnt be further from the "Chinese farmer" category. Lot of them speaks English on a decent level and you can play with them sometimes even better than with other pugs. Only thing is annoying when they start to speak with each other and all you see in the chat is ? instead of any kind of latter or punctuation.

Mikeb was right on with the the translations.

The person messaging you was obviously typing Chinese of the Mandarin variety. You were both using PinYin (??), which is the official romanization of "common" Chinese in the Mainland.

1) Why would a legitimate player that speaks chinese play on American realms? Its a lot more expensive for one, and the language barrier in a game thats supposed to be social seems a bit silly to me.
2) If it was an illigitimate player (gold farmer) why would they make contact with you? They are normally bots with like 1 guy running 20+ PCs. Unless he/she was doing a little R&D or something?
I'm on the other side of this issue. I'm an American playing on Chinese servers. The game is fun in and of itself, and there are quite possibly many gamers playing on US/EU realms that have crap for English. My Chinese is abysmal, yet I can still get by playing the game in Chinese. I don't talk much to other players, but I study the raid encounters on English sites and then play my 'expected' role to the best I can. After discovering multi-boxing the game has been a bit more fun, because now i'm not forced to deal with stupid PUGs when I'm doing 5 mans. It's so hard to be a group leader when you can barely communicate with your groupmates.

Playing WOW in China has a different pay structure than the US. It can actually be MORE expensive depending on how much you play. I pay around 27 RMB ($3.55) for 4000 minutes of gametime. You'd have to play quite a lot in order to spend more than you would in US servers, but it's still very possible for a WOW addict.

I have a strong feeling that most farmers aren't 1 guy running 20 accounts. Don't let your imagination take over when thinking about how the farmers operate. I've never seen a gold farming operation during my time here, but I've asked some co-workers about what they are like. It's probably just a half a dozen people in a rented office/room with 6 to 8 pcs jammed inside with the workers working 12 hour days and sleeping upstairs. Something very common for many industries here. When I first started working in China I worked 12+ hour days and slept at the office after 16 + hour days. I work in a Chinese company.

The reason you see the question marks is probably because they installed Chinese fonts into there WOW folder, OR they are using the Chinese game client to play. This forum probably wouldn't tolarate step by step instructions on how to use one game client to play in another country, but it's possible. It's quite possible to be anywhere in the world and play on any server in the world. You just need someone's account.
