View Full Version : Mining with mackinaws - Orca Feels Wasted

So right now I am just getting my feet wet back in the game, mining in hi sec.
Last time I was playing I made the switch from mining with hulks and hauling with an orca to just boosting with an orca and mining and hauling with mackinaws... I really like the change to be honest, my yield is a bit lower probably but convenience factor makes up for it in my opinion.
Anyways. Now I find myself flying a 600m ISK ship with nothing to do.
I'm contemplating putting it in a belt and letting drones mine lol just so its doing something.
Do you guys just park your orca, hit your boosters and forget it?

Just leave him Parked at the station the boosts he gives are well worth it if you have more then 3 macks having an orca increases isk/hr massivly

No no I dont discount the usefulness of the orca boosting, I am saying it feels wasteful for the character to do nothing but sit there and boost.
Was thinking about maybe putting him in a command ship and fitting it for mining lol. Boost would take a hit from not being in a dedicated ship though so probably not worth it.

no no no no no no
Boost with Orca, Haul with Miasmos.

Just remember that he is increasing your miners effectiveness by almost double.

i use a freighter to haul. it may seem wasteful btu when youre pulling in almost 60m3 of ore every cycle. a miasmos doesnt have the capacity to haul and youre left with cans sitting around in space waiting for the miasmos to come and pick them up.

My miasmos keeps up with the output of 9 miners, not sure what you're running (or where).

isnt the hold on the miasmos about 60k?
my hulks pull in about 2.3k a minute. if youre using 9 miners, thats 20.7k m3 every every minute. if youre using a miasmos that can hold about 60k that means you gotta do a run every 2 minutes. dont know about you, but theres no way my hauler can make it to a station or pos in 2 minutes unless its in the same system.
the thing about where i mine is that its a dead end nullsec system and the moons are all taken so i need to jump 1 system out before i can drop off the minerals. technically this is very dangerous in null, but its always pretty well scouted before i do anything . dead end pipes are great
Freighter Mining FTW! i run 9 to 11 hulks depending on where i am, Miasmos cant keep up even if i focus on him getting ore out of cans. Freighter mining is a much more laid back affair.

I just finished mining with 11 toons and 104sec cycles and my Miasmos which holds 58k kept up just fine. There was actually some time I had to wait for my holds to fill up before jetting again. I guess in hisec you can use a freighter but in null that's not wise with the new interceptors. BTW I would shoot myself if I was mining in hisec.

63k m3 hold (gallente indy V), 5.18 AU/s warp, quick align time, and costs under 10 mil. You can get faster warp times with implants. Faster warp = faster hauling.

So to be clear, you guys have run the numbers on hulks w/ dedicated hauler vs mackinaws hauling for themselves and you prefer the hulks?

It really matters on what you're capable of handling, and where you are mining. If you can micro well enough to keep the hulks emptying their hold, then you'll get better yield. Many of us tend to use Retrievers/Mackinaws because they are low micro management compared to the other two, and the yield isn't that far below Hulks.
The reason to use a hauler in the first place is to keep the miners cycling their lasers. Every time a mining barge has to warp off, that is lost yield. You have to come up with what gets you more yield - warping a squad of barges to a station/pos to drop off ore, or to have a dedicated pilot to continuously haul to keep the miners cycling. It mainly depends on the size of the fleet you're running.
