View Full Version : [WoW] Multiboxing With MiRai

I upload (almost) all of my videos directly to the D-B Commons, but I know not everyone pays attention to that or even knows that it exists, so I'm creating this thread for a little extra exposure. I'm unable to stream because my internet is on par with speeds from 2003, so I rigged up a bunch of stuff to record myself playing -- Hopefully I'm doing it right.
Having to come up with semi-interesting conversation at the same time while playing can be a challenge, so I ask that you bear with my ridiculous commentary. These videos aren't meant to show off how much DPS I can do or how better I am at multiboxing than the next person (because I'm pretty terrible) nor should they necessarily be used as a "How To" for specific instances -- It's just going to be a video series for the purpose of fun, entertainment, and nostalgia (until I eventually move into the current expansion).
-------- New --------
RaF Leveling (Post 6.0):
While leveling some new sets of teams through dungeons I figured that I'd partially follow the progress of one team during their journey. I say partially because this RaF Leveling series actually stops when I reach the WotLK instance since I've already done all of them on video, and I'm trying to save the Cataclysm instances for whenever I get around to doing their heroic versions.
With that said, I will be following up with two other separate series of videos with just pre-70 old school instances and pre-80 heroics, so if this team didn't get thrown into an instance that you'd really like to see, then you shouldn't worry because I'll eventually get around to doing it.
I am in full heirlooms and am using the LFD tool the entire way minus the very first video.

Wrath Heroics (Pre 6.0):
This first "episode" was more of a pilot test run and it contains both Utgarde Keep and Utgarde Pinnacle (heroic) -- Future videos will only contain a single instance and will hopefully be much shorter.

I was just logged into nodiatis (http://www.nodiatis.com/?SIWkK), a browser game I left 4 years ago or so.
And I couldn't help it but think about an old screenshot I once took in that game when seeing you on camera.
Finally knew who modelled for it!
Btw, the talking on camera works really well and is enjoying!

Thanks. Perhaps I should become the the "Multiboxing Pirate". >_>

Thanks. Yeah, it's a three-way type of setup where I'm using an actual video camera, my regular mic, and then FRAPS to do my screen capture. I take all the raw footage and sync it together to make the video.

It was very entertaining, *and* useful, MiRai. Thank you. For us newcomers it is extremely useful to show how MB can be used for fun, as opposed to using it just to level some toons.
Your video coaxed me into taking my 3-man team (heals, tank, dps) into UK (regular) and trying to complete the instance. This is the first time I've been in an instance with my leveling toons. I wiped several times on Keleseth, but along the way I leveled from 71 to 72 and that pushed my dps enough that I managed to kill him. Woohoo! I'm still working on the final boss (the second double-boss was cake) but your video convinced me that it was possible, and gave me some clues on how to do it.
I can hardly wait until I get this team to 80 and then start a new 5-man team which I plan to level all the way from 10 in dungeons.
You are the man, MiRai. Do it some more, please!
EDIT: I made it to 80 with this team - did all the dungeons from UK to Gundrak in 3 days. Went from 70 to 80. Sweet. Now putting together my 5-man team.

Thanks. Hoping to get some more of these videos released over the next week, but first I'd like to fix a few things both on my UI and in ISBoxer before doing so. I'd like the next video to be a quick overview of my UI and ISBoxer profile because I'm already getting questions on those and it's going to be easier to just refer people back to a video than constantly repeating myself in comments and PMs.

On the Common Modifications page of the ISBoxer wiki it talks about using the Hot-Key Wizard and it says:
The Target (http://isboxer.com/wiki/Target?useskin=chick) window(s) to send the key to
Whether to Hold the broadcasted key while you hold the Hotkey, or to instant-fire it when you Press, or Release the Hotkey. Note that if you'll be broadcasting a movement key, you will probably need to use the Hold mode.
Is this the way to get the strafing keys bound to the sideways scroll key click? Can it be bound on the "always on" map?

I've been kinda busy lately, but a new episode is up!
I've got a large project that I need to finish before I can do another episode, so I'm going to estimate that there won't be another one until mid September. The remaining instances in Wrath should prove to be a bit more difficult than what I've done so far, so hopefully that'll make for some good entertainment. ;)

It was meant as a joke.
It's really just for an added look or feel for my user interface, but it also gives me the ability to easier see where my current target is (assuming the nameplate is visible).

Haha! I'm trying to record the next instance today and will continue to try to release the rest of the WotLK stuff much, much quicker than before now that I'm kind of on vacation. I'd like to eventually do this for other games as well... someday.

I've been asked this a few times so maybe I should add it to my list of video tutorials to do, but they're Menu buttons with custom images that are tied to a small labyrinth of Mapped Keys which both enable and disable Key Maps, as well as toggle the red and green (and now blue) sets of numbers.

Mirai, What affected your decision making for your group composition (http://raidcomp.mmo-champion.com/?c=emaht00000000000000000000000000000000000)? You have a wide range of CC there. large array of buffs. Your Pally allows you to not only AoE but take quite a licking while doing so. You have backup heals for your backup heals. What else am i leaving out. Why warrior out of all the Melee choices?

Mirai, What affected your decision making for your group composition (http://raidcomp.mmo-champion.com/?c=emaht00000000000000000000000000000000000)? You have a wide range of CC there. large array of buffs. Your Pally allows you to not only AoE but take quite a licking while doing so. You have backup heals for your backup heals. What else am i leaving out. Why warrior out of all the Melee choices?
I don't really have any concrete reasons for choosing this team composition except that I wanted a mixed team and they were the first five characters to hit level 80. The Warrior is part of a second team that hit level 80 and since I ended up not liking the Druid all that much on the first team I just moved the Warrior over because she was on the same account (but part of the second team). There are some nice things about the Warrior, which I'll cover in a later video, but I didn't make the decision to replace the Druid with the Warrior because of a mathematical equation which told me the Warrior was better number-wise; and in fact, by removing the Druid I've lost the only battle rez I had.
Like I mentioned in the latest video, I'd like to keep the Mage around because one day I know I'm going to want to sheep something, but until then she's kinda worthless in her current state if we're just looking at total damage and DPS. I was tempted to replace her with a Retribution Paladin which I have sitting idle (again, from the second team) because melee classes seem to be doing great in Wrath heroics -- But that's the problem... They're Wrath heroics, and they're pretty easy since they're no longer current content. I know at some point I'm going to do content which is more difficult than what I'm doing right now and I won't be able to over gear them. Ranged classes are almost always easier to manage when multiboxing and if I permanently replace the Mage with a second Paladin then my entire team is going to be melee minus the healer. Obviously, an all melee team is not the easiest composition to manage because once I encounter a boss that does some AoE damage I'm not going to be able to heal 4 characters while I'm trying to get them all out of the fire, whereas with a ranged team they'd all be spread out and there would be no AoE damage being dealt at all.
However, I can only hope that one day I have so much time on my hands that I can just level up a ton of classes and then do a ridiculous amount of theorycrafting and write-ups about synergy and group compositions which other people might find useful, but until then, I'm just pretty much playing what I think is fun to play (which will always be my first recommendation when playing any game).

Episode 7 shows how you can take care of buffs in most MMO's. A good proof of concept video. I"d like to put forth another solution to managing buffs in World of Warcraft involving the SmartBuff (http://www.curse.com/addons/wow/smart-buff) addon.
complements a minimalist clean UI look. It can be configured to leave no buttons or other residue.
It can be integrated into isboxer's macro library with the macro command [/click SmartBuff_KeyButton]
bind it to something like your follow key. added as a second or consecutive step to your follow action.
Its a set and forget system. Allowing you spend more your attention on other matters.
Supports all classes
Checks buffs and rebuff you, raid/party members, raid/party pets
Setup your own buff templates (Solo, Party, Raid, Battleground, MC, Ony, BWL, AQ, ZG, Custom 1-5)
Auto switch templates
Individual setup for each buff
Supports group buffs: 'Gift of the Wild'/'Arcane Brilliance'/'Prayer of Fortitude'/'Prayer of Spirit', incl. group size and reagence check
Supports class buffs: all greater blessings of the Paladin
Supports self buffs
Supports weapon buffs (individual for main and off hand): Shaman, all poisons (Rogue), all stones and oils, incl. reagence check
Reminder if a buff is missing (Splash/chat/sound)
Only one key is needed

Your UI and setup is so clean, it makes me want to re-do mine, but I'm just too lazy.
Random question, but what do the characters beside your unit frames say?
Also, is there anywhere a guide/tutorial on that healing setup? It seems like it's a great way to go and I think I'd like to mimic it on some of my teams.

It's an adaptation from a guide (http://isboxer.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=42&t=2911) that was put together by Alge on advanced healing for use with the Pro System (http://isboxer.com/wiki/Style:MMO_-_Pro) and can be kinda complicated if you're not familiar with all of that.

interupt alert (http://www.curse.com/addons/wow/iinterruptedthat) - call out successful interrupt
InterruptAlert is a custom add-on that was created for me by someone else which alerts me if my target is casting a spell. It's definitely not one of those add-ons that announces to everyone that they interrupted something -- I really dislike those spammy add-ons.
Don't tell anyone, but Jamba is not in your list.
I haven't used JAMBA since sometime during WotLK. Props to Jafula for creating it and maintaining it, but I just feel that 1) it doesn't do anything for me that I can't really already do myself, and 2) it doesn't fit into my UI anywhere.

Mirai,
can you post a picture of your mic setup and what kind of mic you use? I'm using a blue yeti, that I absolutely adore btw, but I haven't really found a position for it that I feel comfortable with yet.

I don't have any still photos of my mic setup, but it's not a stationary setup -- It's a Shure SM7B attached to a cheapo stand that I move around when it's time to record. As I stated in episode 6.5 (and as can be seen in episodes prior to that) the mic used to be attached to a Heil overhead boom stand, but after upgrading my desk it was no longer possible to use it and now it sits in my closet.
The rest of my hardware can be found on my neglected blog site (http://multiboxology.com/about/).

I didn't even realize it was a real list, I mean I just thought as a joke you printed out a list of every addon on curse or something.

Lies. He doesn't use it because he doesn't play. Now, if it helped him tweak his UI or make videos, he'd be all over it, heh.

EpicWin addons (not endored by MiRai)
I'd rather not turn this into a "here is a long list of my favorite add-ons" thread -- Asterisk asked for a screenshot of my add-ons folder and I delivered. If you, or anyone else, wants to share how their UI is set up and what add-ons they use on a daily basis for multiboxing, then by all means feel free to do so, but I have to ask that it gets its own thread.

This concludes the Wrath of the Lich King heroic instances (no, no Oculus) and, unfortunately, there is going to be a bit of a break while I concentrate on some other videos and projects I have waiting to be started (and finished). Hopefully I will be able to revisit this series sooner than 2016, but thanks to everyone who has been watching (and, in the future, will watch) this series. :)

I've updated the original post (http://www.dual-boxing.com/threads/49827-Multiboxing-With-MiRai?p=382539&viewfull=1#post382539) with a new (and unfinished) set of videos following one of my teams as they level with RaF through dungeons.
