I posted this on page 4 of a Ghostcrawler thread, but after I did so, looked at it and thought it might be of use to people in the Rift forum, so included it here as well.

Rift becomes F2P on the 12th. I started playing it about a month ago and am very much enjoying it. The leveling experience is amazingly good compared to WoW. I started out on one team of five doing quests up to level 18 or so. Much like WoW, there are a number of collection quests that are pretty annoying. Rift has IWT, so getting or completing quests isn't too bad, but leveling was similar in speed to WoW.

Then I discovered Instant Adventures. They are glorious and a huge innovation over anything I saw in WoW. Once you party (or raid) up, your whole team is instantly teleported somewhere in the world and automatically given a quest like kill 30 spiders. You join other people doing the quest as well, then have a ton of people all working on the same goal. When it is done, you automatically get quest reward experience and get a new quest. The army of folks mounts up, runs a short distance, then starts on the next quest. No obtaining quests, no turning them in, no choosing quest rewards, all of that is automatic and you can continually focus on completing quest objectives. You automatically get class and level appropriate quest rewards in your bags.

The exp is better than regular questing, the quest variety is plentiful, you get to work with others, you get to see the world of Rift, which was all brand new to me - what's not to like?

Anyway, once I figured that out, I quickly got another five boxes and started ten boxing - very little additional effort to level ten instead of five. My teams are now over level 40 and I'm having a great time. I have fiund Rift very similar to WoW but more fun and free.

Great post.

Yet, I believe GhostCrawler has finally put a stance in the public for not supporting multiboxers. Still a great post none the less. What server / faction are you on? I am also ditching WoW and their shortsided views to go play Rift. Ive not even bought one Rift game yet. No clue what Im about to get into.

Its reviews and comments like this that give me confidence that Rift will be a suitable substitute and transition from pre patch 5.2 WoW

Faeblight, guardian side. Although we're going to see F2P soon, I went ahead and bought the Storm Legion pack for all my 10 accounts. It is only $20 at GameStop, includes the original game, 30 days of game time (which I think will translate in Patron days on the 12th), and a few things you'd have to buy individually once F2P rolls around: full bags slots, character slots, and all three new souls.

To me, the $20 per account for all that was a no brainier, as I think just the slots and souls will cost much more than that once F2P hits.

One other note - before the 12th you can go onto the PTR to try out the money store. Any in game currency you buy and spend on the PTR will be refunded onto your normal account multiplied by somewhere between 1.5 and 2. So basically if you think you will be spending some money on Rift in the future, you can get 150% to 200% of the value if you act before the 12th. Compared to what I spent on WoW every month, it is a pretty easy call to put $100 down now in the Rift store. When you spend $100, you get a 23% bonus as well, then the 150% to 200% bonus on top of that before the 12th - makes for a pretty good deal IMHO.

Ok, thanks. Done deal.

I visited my local GameStop today during my lunch hour. Turns out they emptied their SKUs when the announcement of F2P went out. Each box was sold for $4.99 USD. Yes, I said $5 a box. Soooo, I asked if there were any in stores close by.. yup! I have 5 copies coming, and should be at my local store by next tuesday. $25 + tax - 5% Powerup Rewards points = $25.36 total.

See you soon!

Nice Apps, that's a steal for sure!

Hmmm.... At that price, I may as well get ten more copies and 20-box it. There ARE 20 man raids and I know you can 20-man Instant Adventures....

Oh, I guess I'm forgetting the $6K for two more systems + 31" monitors. Oh well, was a good thought :p

I've been considering reactivating one account as a "premium" one and my other 4 as F2P when it's settled down a bit. Cheap fun, IMO.

I see one little problem if your leader is the premium patron, he will have a +10% increased mount speed.

They do increase all party members mounted speed if a mentored party member has a faster mount than you, but I think thats just in instant adventures and lfg.

"premium" can be done as little as 3 days the xp buff and mount buff would mass off the "alts" am just going to get 3 days "premium" go all out in the 3 days when leveling to the boosts.

One thing about questing in Rift. They fixed pretty much all of the "collection" type quests in the expansion (level 50-60 quests), so everyone in the group gets credit when one character "collects" an item. Makes questing much more enjoyable. :)

Ah, that's great to know, Smedbox. My guys are getting pretty close to the level 50 mark and I've been told that doing the SL quests as normal (as opposed to doing Instant Adventures for the last ten levels) is the way to go because you get a much better set of starting armor for 60 and gain important reputation with valuable factions. I wasn't looking forward to going back to regular questing compared to the ease of IAs - this makes me feel better about it.

Whats your in game name or name(s) and or Guild name?

I joined a guild to try to help myself learn stuff, but they suck and are NEVER online. Sucktastic. I need people to play with to help teach me the game. I did some dungeon last night.. Soul something I think!? level 20. I was 100% LOST when running it. then someone posted DPS charts. mine was an 8.

The guild I have found myself in is called Philanthropy. It is a very large guild but has been extremely helpful. No one else boxes so the concept is pretty foreign to them (or was before me). I get in their Mumble most of the time I'm playing and I am shocked and amazed that at least half the people talking are female. Never seen such a large population of the fairer sex in a guild. Maybe that's why they are always volunteering to help each other out.

This weekend a handful of level 60s took some time to run lowbies through some Storm Legion hunt rifts because the exp and rewards are great. They asked if my 10 wanted to join and though my guys were dead and being rezzed and summoned 90% of the time they were very patient. A few nonguildies messaged the leader and gave her a lot of crap about a lowbie boxer being involved, but she defended me throughout. I hope to get to 60 so I can be the person helping others out soon. Anyway, my main is Pantero, so just feel free to join Philanthropy or shoot me a message in game.

Guild Wars 2 has a similar system for questing. No automatic teleport (you have to travel to the quest area) but as soon as you enter the quest area the quest objectives show up on screen and everyone's efforts go towards completing it. When it's complete you get rewards based on how much you participated and a currency that you can spend with the quest NPC. The have "events" that will occur based on certain triggers (some will repeat after a set amount of time, others are started by interacting with an NPC) that are similar, but some require at least a few players in order to complete. If you take part, or are within the area, you get some kind of reward.

I expect that Blizzard will add this to Titan, as it makes for a very nice leveling flow. Being able to participate and get credit without having to beg for a group, just jumping in and participating, is great. And on PVE servers I figure multiboxers will get less flak, since they'll be able to help complete objectives quicker and everyone benefits.

McWrathy, Nice to see you again. I joined this guild last night... well, I submitted to join it. Its a higher level guild, so its got the guild perks I wanted. The people seem nice from what Five stated. Im currently operating a dps cleric, dps mage, and a dps huntsman in a single group. Tonight I plan to get a tank and a healer setup. The goal of boxing 5 should do it for me for now.

I also have a level 20 something melee cleric that I used to "figure shit out".

Come join us... having three boxers in one guild amongst many should be quite a lot of fun.

Agreed! Will be fun to try to figure things out together. I got one of my teams to 50 tonight, with the other group sitting at 46.

Oh, and this probably goes without saying, but we should try to be as friendly and gracious to this helpful guild as we can. As you know, there tends to be a natural undercurrent of jealousy from single boxers when they see the power and flexibility we boxers have. There hasn't been any of it so far in the guild, but it's human nature, so I'm doing my best to discourage it by being a nice guy.

I *thought* that was you, and wasnt certain till I saw 10 characters log out at once. I am Appwillow. I am very new. I'll be learning to Box Rift at the same time I learn Rift.

Few things that are confusing the hell out of me. Talent trees and Souls. WTF?! I thought there were three talent trees. But then I clicked on something in that menu and a pop up came up sayin if I proceed I will reset all my characters Souls and it gave me a list of about 5 other types of cleric to choose from. My characters have no gathering or crafting skills, and I *think* I understand the whole "rift" thing. Basically, when I see one on the map, I run to it, click the button to finish opening a rift that is starting, (forget the name), and kill everything that comes out. When the Rift closes.. I get some "currency"? I guess is what it is.. hell I dunno yet.

Anyway, thats it. Thats as much about the game as I understand it.

That's awesome. Sounds like my initial experience. You are well on your way. As for the talent trees, they look to provide a ton of customization options, but when you create a character you have to select a basic spec theme. This theme has a whole design for how you will spend all your points as you level up and is the beginner's way to get a basic tree set up that is pretty good. That way you can just tell it to Spend All Points and it will fill in whatever points you have available towards that design. If you spend points in any other way, it figures you are an advanced user and won't use the design theme for you anymore (the training wheels will be off and you'll have to spend each point individually). I've kept the training wheels on for all my characters so far and look forward to messing with the myriad of options when I cap out and want to optimize.

Just thought I'd note another cool thing I've found in the last few days questing in the Storm Legion (level 48+) zones. In WoW when I was leveling 10 toons at once, I'd have to do the quests twice because only one team would get credit at a time. However, in Rift, all the toons in a raid get quest credit. This means you could have up to 20 people completing quest objectives at once. And unlike IAs, the basic zone quest objectives don't scale with the number of people in the party or raid doing them, so kill 8 spiders is still kill 8, not kill 32. There are still the very rare core collection quest (core meaning it is a major link in a quest chain), but only 1 or 2 of these per zone. More ease of leveling for boxers - makes leveling a MUCH more pleasant experience!

I noticed this at the weekend when my 5 mages joined up with a mate and continued to quest.
However, the XP seems to be down, as my progress slowed to a crawl whilst we were raided - of course, this is my first real attempt at Rift, so it's hard to be sure that wasn't normal L12-13 speed!

When you have a full group or raid, the majority of your XP comes from turning in the quests, not killing mobs. So turn in the quests quickly. The same happens in IAs, you get the most XP from finishing each IA quest, not killing mobs.
