Everytime a good SiFi show comes to an end.. it takes a piece of me with it. I dread the "series finale" ..Like ST:NG, all the Stargate shows, BSG ( old and new version ) Firefly..etc.. I always have a fear that it will be years before we see another great Sifi TV show. Well, IMO, i think this will be a great one, and i hope it has a large fan base, large enough to keep the ratings up and keep it around. I know good starts do not equal great series long term, but this one has all the ingredients to be a fan fav!

I might even play the stupid game, so i can immerse myself in the story a bit more. I never have stayed with any Sifi game.. i love the movies and TV shows.. but my prefered gaming genre will always be fantasy. There have only been a hand full of "ok" fantacy shows. Legend of the Seeker as an example.

This is a good read >> http://www.huffingtonpost.com/maureen-ryan/defiance-review_b_3082390.html

Anyone else like the shows premiere?

I liked it far more than I expected. It's a rather ambitious project for SyFy considering all they have been for a while is crappy reality shows, wrestling and the obligatory horrible mutated critter B movies, with random "SyFy originals" {more often than not, stuff from other countries} thrown in. According to GateWorld (http://networkedblogs.com/Kl7Kx), the numbers were really good for SyFy, so that's encouraging.

I'm a sucker for Rockne S. O'Bannon thanks to FarScape and I really hope Defiance works out better for him than Cult. It's already off to a far better start than most new "scifi," which as both the Huffington Post and the GateWorld article point out, has been only barely scifi.

I think they did a good job establishing the world and characters and there's no bad casting I could see from the first episode. The manipulations and devious undercurrent of the "bad guys" reminded me a lot more of Deadwood and Rome than your standard science fiction shows, which I really liked. The "good guys" aren't totally naive goodie-two-shoes, which is also something I enjoyed. It's always a bonus when I don't want to punch the entire cast in the face for being overboard and cliché.

The only thing I think they could have done better was throw out a bit more to establish what the "outside world" is like. I didn't really get a very strong impression of what would make Nolan want to leave Defiance, though I could buy it from Irisa. In the same vein, there wasn't much of a sense of terror at the idea of leaving Defiance for the regular townfolk either. It felt kind of like they were all milling around saying "ho hum, we're getting invaded. Guess we gotta move now." It made the whole decision to stand up and fight kind of flat and hokey.

From what i have read, it sounds like they put a lot of the back story in the game, which is why i will play it, at least long enough to get "the rest of the story". Or more of it? Like i said, never been a big fan of sifi/ first person shooter mmos. Star Wars games feel like a hybrid of Scifi and Fantasy to me..and i why I have played a lot of those.

Been playing it for about 5 days now.. It plays like Borderlands and Guild Wars 2 combined. The game play is fun, 1 linear quest story mode like Star wars class quest with 1000 small quests that you can pick up just by being in the area. Also has rift type features where an area event will happen. Its a really good game, graphics are nice, gameplay is better. Free to play after purchase, so thats always a plus. Check it out sometime if you have some free time. I'll try to get a video up soon.

How does the series compare to Battlestar: Galactica (with Edward James Olmos as Admiral Adama)?

The only negative thing I can say about defiance is some of the effects are obviously budget effects.. they do not have the budget BSG had. But the characters.. the story, so far, more than make up for that. I HOPE that it gets enough of a following to not only get renewed, but be able to increase its budget and have room to improve the special effects. They are good, but they could be better for sure.

And thank you for the mini review Oat.. im looking forward to trying the game!

I have been following Julie Benz (Buffy, Dexter) on twitter for some time now. She is bff with Jaime Murray (also on the show). I was reading last year about her shooting for a new series but I had no idea it would be this. I understand they have 13 or so episodes in the can so we can expect to see a full season. I hope they renew it (fingers crossed).

I loved them both in Dexter! Even when they had all their cloths on! ( hehe )
