I haven't jumped in yet, but I am curious. Does Rift feature IWT + Click to move like WoW allowing for melee teams to actually engage their target? Or does melee require the standard walk the team to the target method?
Rift does not currently support Interact with Target Movement with CTM enabled. You have to currently walk your team, or set your team to follow your lead as they melee.

How forgiving is the melee movement? Can you reliably keep moving and they will keep swinging? I haven't played in a couple years so I can't really remember how finicky it was ;p
Next question is, do you need to face your target to use dot abilities?
I can only speak for the clerics dot'ing: i know that i do not have to face my target to DOT mobs with Vex or Sanction Heretic.
You can melee on the move with many of the cleric and mage melee specs, i have not done a rogue or a warrior in melee yet. most melee abilities are instant so there should be no need for them to break follow.

What is the range like on melee attacks. Do you need to be right on top of the target for followers to hit?
melee is sometimes right on top, it really varies based on mob type.

So the big question then is, how would a team of melee characters do in PvP? ;p
Which is exactly the question i cant answer at the moment :p.
After i get my new team of clerics up to 60, i was looking at doing a rogue(ranged team for pvp) or doing a Mage-Harbinger team, as their ST and AoE damage is pretty crazy upclose, not to mention their gap closer, and reverse blinking they can do to change the range up.
