Well I finally bit the bullet, I ordered a Phenom 9600 black edition and a new AM2+ mainboard for my system... I'll be stepping into the world of quad core V-Boxing next week and we shall see if this puppy really cooks like it should! Having already purchased 4gb of ram and an 8800gt I think I'll just throw in the towel if this ends up not pushing me over the top performance wise.

Now if only NewEgg would deliver on Saturday I'd be a really happy camper, but I guess I have to wait til Tuesday (unless by some miracle they ship after 4pm on friday...)

WoW is more constrained by RAM and the video card (and even hard drive bottlenecks) than by CPU, all else equal.

That said, a move from dual to quad core will help a ton if you run > 3 accounts.

I'm running a single core 3.2ghz system and can 5-box on one machine. I have 4gb ram (only 3.5gb is recognised (xp) ) but I do okay.

I upgrade to a quad core in less than 7 days though so looking forward to that, then I get my second machine in 2 weeks. :)

I would say RAM is the biggest thing to focus on IMO.

Thats the thing...

I've got ram, I'm not capping it.
I've got an 8800gt, it's no where near pushing the limits.
I've got fast hard drives, they aren't being pushed.
I've got a solid network connection, it's not being pushed.
I've got a dual core X2 6000 (3ghz)... it sits with both cores between 85% and 100% when I five box, my sound crackles and pops on both the game and ventrilo, if I move to the old world (Barrens, Durotar, etc) the CPU drops significantly and I run just fine... but since my primary 5 box team is 70th and working their way through Karazhan raids... I need to juice it up.

The CPU is definitely the bottleneck, the PCI-Express 1.0 slot that my 8800gt (PCI-Express 2.0) is sitting in could be a bottleneck as well... replacing the Dual 3ghz with a quad 2.4ghz should end in a net gain, and if by some wierd chance it doesn't, I just swap back, and throw that in my DVR system.

I upgraded to vista 64 and I have 4gig ram. Right now I have the Core 2 Duo 6600 running at 2.4ghz. The other day I was doing slavepens and underbog with my 5 man. I usually avg around 20-30fps on my main when I load them all up. But when I did the instance I dropped down to 10 and under on my main. I have all my video settings lowered and I am wondering if its mods causing this problem. I may bite the bullet and get 8gig of ram and a quad 6600. Not sure if it will be much better but if my main slows down like that when I am doing lvl 70 instances its going to be rough.

My video cards are an ATI 3780 512meg ram and ATI x1950xtx 512meg ram. Those cards should be fine. I think my problem is 4gig of ram with vista64. Everything I read says once you go 8gigs in Vista64 you will notice a huge difference. What sucks is I just purchased 2gig of ram so if I buy 8gig it will cost me about $140 and make my current ram useless.

Zanthor I clicked on one of your team doublemint links and it opened up a shit ton of pages. I powered down my laptop quickly. I sure hope there is no trojans in that link.

I am scared to click it again. When I did it was opening an unlimited amount of new browser tabs so I clicked the power button asap.

What Mobo are you using for the 9600? If it supports HT3, then that would help with some of the bottlenecks I would think.

if you recently upgraded to SP1 ( with out using windowsupdate) that could be the reason for your sudden drop in frame rate ( it was for me). There are issues with it and other hot fixes ( dont ask i dont know specifics, look it up and read if your curious). Some computers take SP1 just fine, others dont( mostly OEM's copys that are the problem children)

Good to hear Zanthor!!

I am still waiting on my QX9650 and QX9775 from my friend and then I will be on my way to quad core goodness!! :oD
Also, trying to combine the QX9650 with two 9600GT's or 8800GT's, but I am not sure if I would gain any performance benefits via SLI.

Just got my baby's yesterday!! Unfortunately the QX9775 turned out to be a QX9770, but I could care less considering I wasn't going to use the QX9775 anyway. I want to try this 10-box scenario out SOOOO badly, but I only have one graphics card so no 2+ monitor love. I will however see how well they run piled on top of each other!! I am going either SLI via 8800GT or single card solution with a cheap 8800GTx $289AR. I will show up here a little later to post my findings.

you should know that afaik SLI doesnt support more than 1 display at a time (do dual view possible)... so you should go for better gpu
