i'm using Microsoft Security Essentials, it was free and so far so good.

MSE is fine for most home users.

If you're carrying removable media into school computer labs or are on a LAN with a bunch of people or have kids using the computer or someone that opens email attachments and clicks links, I might suggest something with a lot more complete coverage.

Vipre from sunbelt software, low resource usage.

I like Webroot Secure Anywhere.

Extremely low resource usage, well under 1MB of ram.
Doesn't impact my gaming at all.

It relies on heuristic behaviors, rather than a virus definition file.
