View Full Version : res always resets to 800x600?

So I have my maximizer set up with the pip working, but when I switch from my main char to my alt I get a full screen res at 800x600. It does'nt look so good cause my monitors default res is 1280x720. I set my in-game res to 1280x720 close wow then start-up wow using keyclone, and boom back to 800x600??? How do I keep the in-game res from changing to 800x600.
keyclone

that would depend on your maximizer settings.
drop me your keyclone.ini file (please remove account info) and i'll check it

Is it because I play with 3 windows small, and one window at full-screen?
keyclone

i'm guessing your maximizer and command settings are not quite right.
check each command... look at the value for 'region'
then go to maximizer, left click the region you think it is... and check the name at the top.
if it says 'region2' ... then your command must say 'region2' (no quotes)...
some people have thought '2' would be enough. it's not. it must match exactly
and how do you play anything at full screen? you mean windowed, but using the entire screen? that is fine

Looks to me it will always say 800x600, as my WoW's all show 800x600 as the current setting, while the WoW's actually are alot bigger.

hmmm...
first off, you should UNCHECK auto-add. if you use commands, you really don't need it
after that, your commands look right.
your regions look right. clones are 640x360 which is 50% of your screen.. so the aspect ratio should be correct
when you say it doesn't look right, what do you mean? just enlarged or stretched and out of proportions?
(got a screen shot by chance?)

I think what their saying is that regardless of what screen resolution you have in-game, when you start WoW with the maximizer and look at the video settings in-game it is at 800x600.

that doesn't make much sense.
just to confirm:
your main is 1280 x 720
all your clones are 640 x 360
correct?

However when I take for instance the bottom left, to the top it appears to keep the native pip resolution of the smaller box and things look...off.

pyro, your aspect ratios are off.
aspect ratio is what determines where you get a circle or an oval.
to determine the aspect ratio of a region, do this simple math: w / h
so.. a screen that is 640 x 480 would have a ratio of 1.3333
your goal would be to keep all the aspect ratios the same
PyrostasisTDK
03-19-2008, 03:08 PM
Ok... Im an idiot... Im not sure hot to keep the ratios in tact, I was simply dividing the length by 4 and fitting them in, how would I go about dividing them and keeping the 1.33 or 1.6 ratio?
**begins messing around with algebra stuff**
NM figured it out divide divide divide =)

try this... (screen res: 1280 x 720 )
main: x,y( 0,0 ) w,h( 960,720 )
cloneA: x,y( 960,0 ) w,h( 320,240 )
cloneB: x,y( 960,240 ) w,h( 320,240 )
cloneC: x,y( 960,480 ) w,h( 320,240 )
this should stack your clones down the right side. try it and see if their aspect ratio is better

full screen windowed.. ok.. try this... (screen res: 1280 x 720 )
main: x,y( 0,0 ) w,h( 1280,720 )
cloneA: x,y( 0,0 ) w,h( 320,180 )
cloneB: x,y( 0,180 ) w,h( 320,180 )
cloneC: x,y( 0,360 ) w,h( 320,180 )
they might be small... but they will be hidden by the larger region, so it won't matter
also, making it small reduces cpu/gpu load
let me know how it goes...

Copy your wow folder, and call it World of Warcraft1 or something like that, and make another shortcut, set it up for full screen, and use that one when u want to play fullscreen :)

I had an issue with PiP when I called my big region main. Renaming it to Big fixed the problem. I figured that Main was reserved for the whole window somehow.

I was messing around with this last night and found a couple interesting things that might be worth checking out.
When swapping between my big region and a smaller one if the aspect ratio was higher then 1.333333 and your smaller window was less then about 960x600 then you got the "fat swap" for lack of a better term. Fat swap is what scottig is talking about.
However the problem doesnt occur if you keep the aspect ratio at 1.33333
scottig
03-20-2008, 11:51 AM
The speed of the swap isnt the problem. Its almost instant when I switch from my main toon to one of the clones. The problem is when I make the switch to one of the clones the Players look all stretched out and fat and the UI looks all funny too. The mini-map looks like a big oval. But when I switch back to the main char all is well. But it doesnt make sense, because the main was just occupying the region the alt char came from, but he doesn't look all stretched out?!?!
keyclone
03-20-2008, 01:06 PM
after doing a bit of googling, i believe it has something to do with the resolution you are working with. there are posts about wow and aspect ratio back a year or more where the screens looked squashed or stretched.
this doesn't help explain why it would work for one of your screens, but not the small ones.
for grins, try making 2 regions exactly the same size/position... full screen. then try PiP swap between. start them one at a time.. log all the way in... make sure the aspect ratio is good... then start the next one. then try PiP swap and see if the aspect ratio changes (it shouldn't)
and since you want to keep the clones in the back ground, you could set your maxfpsbk to something very low (ie: 5) then when you PiP swap, it'll have the proper aspect ratio (hopefully) and its fps would start to come up to maxfps (ie: 50)
let me know if that works
scottig
03-20-2008, 02:06 PM
I did what you said made 2 regions at 1280x720. I could switch between the 2 no problem. It didnt seem as smooth as before. And one time it stopped swtiching and just stayed on the clone, and wouldnt switch back to the main char? So I added the 3rd clone in the 3rd region at 640,360, and when I try to switch to him. It would still look all fat and stretched. The 2 full screen regions were fine though. Maybe its a setting on my video card. I have no clue.

I have another monitor. An old 17" pos. I'll try and see if I can get it to work on it. Res is 1280x1024 what size should i make the clones?
keyclone
03-20-2008, 02:14 PM
if you still want to run a full screen with the clones behind, just divide the full screen width and height by 2.
so the clones would be 640x512. you could also try going further... to 320x256.
either way, you should set all your commands maxfpsbk to something low to save some gpu/cpu and bus bandwidth
Dezeral
03-21-2008, 10:12 AM
Here is a "formula" to figure out a custom resolution that maintains a specific aspect ratio:
http://img169.imageshack.us/img169/355/aspectratiofm0.th.jpg (http://img169.imageshack.us/my.php?image=aspectratiofm0.jpg)
keyclone
03-21-2008, 11:07 AM
@scottig
hmmm... rechecking the math after looking at Dezeral's post, i came down to this:
your aspect ratio is 16:9
you want 3 tall.. so that makes the height 240
16/9 = w / 240
solving for w:
240 * 16 / 9 = w
w == 427 (rounding)
this is different from what i came up with (not sure how)
so.. updating the numbers:
full screen windowed.. ok.. try this... (screen res: 1280 x 720 )
main: x,y( 0,0 ) w,h( 1280,720 )
cloneA: x,y( 0,0 ) w,h( 427,240 )
cloneB: x,y( 0,240 ) w,h( 427,240 )
cloneC: x,y( 0,480 ) w,h( 427,240 )
let me know if that helps.

1st off thank you for all your help... but its still stretched when I switch to a clone :( . On a good note it seems to switch faster now!
P.S. I played on the old 17" CRT and it worked amazing at 1280x1024main 320x256clones! I just think we need to find the sweet spot for 1280x720.
P.S.S. I ran 1280x720main and 427x240clones on the 17" CRT. Guess what!?!? Still stretched. So its not my monitor!!! Just need to find the correct clone res.

URBAN LEGEND WARNING, THIS IS JUST A THEORY NOT REALLY PROVEN.
Could it be that wow automatically changes aspect ratio to 4:3 if the window is too small? The smaller the window that I'm switching from the more likely it is that the aspect ratio is skewed when pipping. If I use 720:450 as my clones and 1440:900 as my main I get distorted pictures when pipping, but if I use 840:520 as the smaller ones they stay the right ratio.
My bigger monitor is 1680:1050 and my smaller one is 1440:900 if I use horizontal span I use the smaller clones and if I use dual view I use bigger ones. The thing is dual view is so much less efficient on my xp...
scottig
03-23-2008, 11:33 AM
Can anyone else try 1280x720 res for there main character and see if you can get your clones to work with PiP. Maybe its my device setting for my video card!?!? I just want to get this fixed :(
I'm running into the same problem now that I'm trying to get going on one computer...
Running 1440x900 (1.6) ratio
Using keyclone's built-in maximizer the small windows always come up 800x600 as they're loading then move off to their proper location but the aspect ratio is wrong because the window started up at 800x600 and their Config.wtf file always gets reset to 800x600 as well.
I *just* tried the original Maximizer program (standalone) and when I fire that off the wow loads with the window size at 1440x900 then pops over to it's location just fine with proper aspect ratio. Only thing now is that I can't use PIP features. :(
Is there a way to use PIP if keyclone app did not start the window?
Keyclone, are you writing to the Config.wtf file or pass it custom res sizes? I think what Oldin said might be happening, if starting wow in a non-blizzard-approved size it reverts to 800x600.
keyclone
03-23-2008, 04:35 PM
there are a number of ratios supported by blizzard...
so, if they support 1280x1024 .. the ratio would be 5:4
800x600 .. ratio would be 4:3
1024x768 .. ratio would be 4:3
for simplicity, i usually just divide the height by the width to get something like 1.25 from 1280x1024 or 1.333 from 800x600
the trick would be to find a smaller size that has the exact same ratio. this is where the math comes in.
assuming they support 1600x1200 and you want to 5 box... let's put 4 stacked on the right... this means the main window is going to be 1600 minus the width of the small clones... or:
(1600-w) / 1200 = w / (1200/4)
(1600 - w) / 1200 = w / 300
(1600 - w) / 4 = w
1600 - w = 4 w
w = 320
so your clone windows would be 320x300 and your main window would be 1280x1200
this ratio works fine (just did it last night)... some experimentation (and math) may be required
keyclone
03-23-2008, 04:38 PM
oh.. and i forgot, no.. wow maximizer has no impact on keyclone.. and keyclone's pip only works with keyclone maximizer
scottig
03-23-2008, 04:47 PM
Have you done any experimentation with 1280x720 :P ?
keyclone
03-23-2008, 05:04 PM
Have you done any experimentation with 1280x720 :P ?actually, i just did. i went to 1280x720 mode... and defined a maximizer layout where i had 1 full screen @ 1280x720 and 2 underneath it that were 320x180. i set the maxfpsbk on all of the commands to 5.. no reason not to save the cpu/gpu... then did ran the 3 wows. they came up (it was weird not seeing them all at once) and i logged in (on faith).. then ENTER to get in game... then ctrl+F2 to swap.. looked fine. ctrl+F3.. looked good... ctrl+F1.. back to the beginning.
so.. if you goal is to run full screen with a pip swap to bring others to the front, 1280x720 on your main region (set it up last) and 320x180 on your others
let me know if that helps.

when you are working with your maximizer editor... did you UNCHECK the 'snap to grid' ?
if you don't, it will attempt to resize the regions to fit the grid
Ok my main screen (well really right now ONLY screen, LOL) is 1920x1200 (ratio 1.6 w/h).
When I raid and solo I want to use full screen.
When I multibox I want to use smaller overlapping windows.
The video settings in WoW show me a 1440x900 setting, which has the same ratio (1.6).
In keyclones maximizer I set up my main region to be lower left and 1440x900, two windows to be 40% width of the 1920 (768x480 = 1.6 ratio), then my final 2 windows to be smaller 576,360 = 1.6.
I've tried running the wow's separate and setting their resolution to be 1440x900 then shutting down and starting with keyclone but no matter what I do all but the main window start up while loading at 800x600, I can see the window outline while it's starting to load so I know it happens immediately. The Config.wtf for each wow also gets it's dimensions changed to 800x600.
If I switch to the old Maximizer the load window starts up at the correct 1440x900 (after having reset it in the Config.wtf file!) then my smaller windows shrink and the aspect is right on but I can't PIP switch. :(
I thought I was going to be clever and copied my Maximizer executable and the Maximizer config file into one of the wow folders and fed Maximizer into the startup command instead! It worked somewhat, the window during load looked like 1440x900 and it properly shrank and went to it's proper location but then PIP switch would not work.
Also, if I make option changes in keyclone it sometimes pops a window from one region to another completely different region that's not even loaded!

I was having the same issue with the resolution getting reset to 800x600.. every time.. and thus making my clone windows look skewed, or as the term that is refered to as FAT.
I editied the config.wtf ( by inserting the resolution i wanted) file and made it read only . I did the same for the maximizer config file.
Boot it up with keyclone maximizier. Everything works like a charm, aspect ratio remains the same.

Same thing here... Resolution reversion to 800x600 was driving me crazy. Putting the resolution into the config.wtf by hand (1920x1200 for all instances) and write protecting the file solved it for me.
Weird... it seems some program (Wow or keyclone) writes a bogus resolution into the file when nobody's watching^^.

1280x720. think i should try setting clones at 320x180 in the config.wtf?
Keyclone, I'm having the same issue, after starting wow windows using the keyclone maximizer the Config.wtf resolution reverts to 800x600 if the keyclone maximizer setting does not match the approved WoW list of resolutions (it does not matter that it's proper ratio, if it's smaller it reverts). However, if I change the Config.wtf file back to 1440x900 then start up a wow, it comes up correctly (started manually). If I then use the old "Maximizer" program (not in Keyclone) the window that pops up stays at 1440x900 and also resizes down to the correct aspect on my second monitor. The Config.wtf file remains untouched at 1440x900. If I exit out of wow then start it up again using keyclone maximizer the settings are reset again to 800x600! Can you provide the command line you are using from within keyclone maximizer? I'd like to test it manually from the command line to see what happens. Also, as a test a few days ago I put Maximizer as the command into keyclone and it started properly but then PiP did not work. Will PiP be available in the future to windows that were not started with keyclone maximizer?
keyclone
03-27-2008, 04:02 PM
the old wow maximizer and keyclone maximizer are not related, other than by functionality
there are no commands. keyclone will modify the config.wtf using the dimensions specified in the maximizer editor... expecting wow to pick it up and use it.
if you lock it to some res, then keyclone won't update it, but that's your call.
Thanks kc, that did the trick, I used properties and made them read only and now when keyclone starts them up the window outline looks correct and the small version is proper, pip works. Not sure why on my system wow is resetting it to 800x600 when a size is in there that does not match it's list.

Also keep having this problem. When I start WoW normally it's all fine, occasionally when I start it via Keyclone it resets to 800x600. Checking in-game settings show 800x600, checking config.wtf shows 1900x1200. Changing in-game setting has no effect until I restart the game.
Checked KC Maximizer-settings, that all seems fine. Snap-to-grid is disabled and both my instances of WoW are set to full-screen on both my displays. Regions are correct.
No idea what causes it but it's very annoying. As mentioned only happens when I start via KC.
