Look, I know it's better to run two cheap computers than have one power horse run 10 instances. I only have two monitors and limited deskspace and I want one computer that will do raids and IoC/AV decently. Minimized settings are fine--I just want decent FPS.

So, I have an I7 920 @ 3.3ghz with 16 gigs of Corsair DDR3 and a GTX 550TI and an SSD. I was able to do some raiding but Org hammers me--My CPU is maxxed out even with everything minimized. So, my question is this: Which of these two options should I go with?

It's $430 versus $590 obviously, but what is going to be the performance gap? I'd love to just pull out the current processor I have and pop the new one in, apply some thermal paste and put the fan on it and go. This is my number one issue: Performance. I can eat the $250 difference if the performance is there.

Oh, and I have an ASUS P6T SE as my current mobo.

My choice would be the newer 2600K processor but, then your 550Ti might bottleneck if you get more CPU headroom.

Odd. My setup is slightly less powerful than yours, and I have no lag problems whatsoever.

Perhaps if he's running DX11 he should try using DX9 and lowering background framerates.

Cheap - Mosg is cheap =) go go i7 3930k + Asus X79 SABERTOOH
use ur current ram, and upgrade later.

Irelevant to ur post I know. But I wouldnt spend money on an older generation anymore i7 2600k is old now

I also disable the sunshafts, shadows, and water effects on my alts. Those can be real fps kickers.

EatCarbs, are you 10-boxing with that setup? I thought you just did 5.

when i added my 580 3GB i was able to 10 box in org with low lag ( low settings with main on medium ) and i only have 8 gigs of ram ( 2600K cpu ). I use one monitor stacked WoWs, and video fx tiles for the alts. Not sure if the 3GB of Vram is what helped. I have not done any BGs with 10, and i am adding 8 more gigs of ram before MoP. Am thinking about selling my 580 and adding a 680 GB when they are available. ( for the other games i play, mostly )

Is the 920 not conducive to overclocking? I bumped up my 2500K this weekend to 4.2 GHz (so incredibly easy with an Asus mobo) and even under heavy load my temps maxed out at 50C.

@Mirai:
How do I swap from DX11 to DX9? Also, I don't think the lag I do get is from my video card--The CPUID shows all my cores at 100% when I'm in org. How do I look at the video card?

@Eatcarbs:
Your GTX560 probably has 2g of vram, the 550ti only has 1g. I (hastily) bought this video card. I'll probably buy another identical one and set'em up in ISBoxer. I also have everything turned off/down on all the toons.

@All:
Well, if Mirai suggests the 2600k then that's the answer :) I was just hesitant to replace the mobo--I'm just always leery to dick around with them. The question now is, does the mobo make a difference as long as it has 4 DIMM slots?

It's in the game options under Advanced.

Haha. I can also tell you that Kicksome was 10-boxing using a 920, 24GB of RAM, and a GTX 580 1.5GB. I don't know what framerates he had but, the only thing he ever mentioned was laggy was intense PvP fights. He upgraded to the GTX 580 and 24GB of RAM and was happy with that. No idea how major cities were and this was on Kil'jaeden.

No, not really. Obviously if you buy a super cheap, bottom-of-the-barrel, motherboard it might not live up to its standards. If you're going the cheap route I would try to find one with a good warranty.

I checked--I was using DX9. I definitely think my processor is my bottleneck. I'll upgrade to the 2600k and see how it spins.

If you're going to upgrade your processor anyways, why not give overclocking it a shot? http://www.overclock.net/t/538439/guide-to-overclocking-the-core-i7-920-or-930-to-4-0ghz

i7-2600k, 12gb RAM, 2gb 6970, 120gb SSD

Managed to 10 box in Org and fraps this at full size the same time:

Was late night and I do struggle during peak times with the amount of models on the screen however

Was that 2600k overclocked or not?

I remember getting 100% CPU usage when I tried 10 boxing earlier and that was without a fraps. What resolution are you using?

Also, for the OP, those 6 core processors SHOULD be better than the 2600k for multiboxing by all means, and will be almost as cheap as buying new mobo+2600k etc(assuming the new mobo you're looking to buy for the 2600k is in the 260$ range).

I mean, it has six cores and 12mb cache when compared to the measly 8mb of 2600. Im not sure how this translates to overall performance but as it appears to me it should be better in every single way aside from the clock speed and overclocking capabalities.

Nevertheless, you shouldn't be running into any problems for running 10 toons with either one of these boys. Your graphics card could become a problem/bottleneck though, as Mirai has already said.

Everything I have is on stock speeds.

All my wow settings are low except view distance on the main window.

Heres a screenshot from a while ago in molten front (low pop zone but lots of units on the screen)

Thought I would post some performance charts as well. My main gets at least 40 fps in org (non focused windows are capped at 20fps). My video card also has 1g memory for those wondering (honestly,I feel the jump from 1g to 2g isn't that noticable. Correct me if wrong).
