Do you find that mana efficient? Ive always heard that Ice was for lvling....
Just curious; about to have to make a choice on the direction i need to go.

For a single mage, frost is more efficient and gives higher survivability. For multiboxing I would go with all fire, or maybe one frost that casts frostbolt to slow down the target(you only need one to do that).

I tried doing one frost and one fire but the fire mage would always run low on mana before the frost.

At the later stages you'll want them to be the same for better synergy.
As stated above, Frost is the better for Solo survivability. For multiboxing though, I think you can get away with blowing it all away before it gets to you :)
I'll have to say though, I am sucker for Frost. Always played frost on my mage, and would die tons anytime I tried out Fire. Also, I really love the way the Frost Tree builds on itself. Either will work, frost has more survival, fire has more damage. I would go with two of the same though.

Currently on my three Lvl 30 mages (& pally/priest) group, I'm running arcane for extra Explosion crits & low resists. Around lvl 50, I'll respec down frost tho, to lock groups in place better & get frost pets (3 pets macro'd with frostbolts = 6 bolts firing!). The ping-map macro will be godly at that point with frost talents.

For purely solo mages, it all depends on how much work you want to do. Ice is more forgiving but fire is higher burst DPS. Fire does have more mobs that resist it than frost so that's a consideration. For multiboxing, I'd not bother with frost unless you plan on doing instances. And then, you really can't do instances unless you have 4-5.
