View Full Version : New Forums Sucks with IE9

I have lost about 5 replys/threads since the switch to these new forums. For some reason it hates IE 9. I uninstalled my IE and reinstalled it and still have issues with these forums. I miss the old forums. They were much easier to navigate and clean to read. Is there a reason why it changed? This bug with crashing IE is making me crazy. I hate fire fox but it's allowing me to post this message.

Posting this from IE9 (eww (http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/new/)). Even font sizes, colors and some new formatting all seems to work fine here.
Not sure
what your
real problems are
as you didn't elaborate (http://www.bing.com/Dictionary/search?q=define+elaborate&qpvt=elaborate&FORM=DTPDIA)any further than
491
I presume you've already gone through IE and disabled any superfluous addins/search providers/etc.?
[edit] I'll tool around on here today in IE9 instead of firefox and see if I see anything untoward.

Also depends on what theme you've selected as each theme could have it's own issues.

I'm using the Blackstealth theme here.
(Posted using IE9...)
IE9... blech. I use GChrome. No issues here.

IE is definitely getting better, but until they have adblock+noscript+flashblock/etc., ain't no way I'll be using it for regular browsing.

Well I was typing a response in my IE9 after I did tons of changes to fix the problem. As normal dual-boxing.com is not responding recover page? Everything lost. I guess if I want to interact on these new forums I must use firefox. Just to note the irc chat from isboxer will not work in my IE9 either. Seems the problems are related. The page crashes when you click post quick reply.

Apparently, it only happens after you've been idling for a while or something. Have you tried compatibility mode?
[edit] posted this in IE9 right after the hang.

Bah. Just hung on me again, this time in compatibility mode. Apparently it doesn't like IE9 or IE9 doesn't like it.
[edit] I'll try it again tonight for a while on a 64-bit OS.

Well, tried browsing around and posting a few things here at the house on IE9 on Win7 64bit (versus 32bit at work) and haven't noticed anything yet. I'll try again tomorrow.

IE9 still has alot of bugs despite what Microsoft says. Download Google Chrome, Safari, or Opera (Firefox is really good but you expressed your dislike for it already.) I am a personal fan of chrome but they each have their own uses.

IE does not work with these new forums. It has forced me to use Firefox. I have tried it on several different pc's and IE locks up when you try to post stuff. I guess there is no chance of going back to the old forums. :(

*same issues, unable to post unless i do it from my phone
Having same issue with IE freezing on posts. Have taken to use of copying to clipboard before posting as post action appears to be piece it doesn't like, though autosave also doesn't seem to be saving anything.

What is the point of this thread anymore?
That the new forum design has a compatibility problem with IE.

Don is way faster than I am.

Perhaps this may help those who have yet to find any one of the several alternate methods.

Lets keep in mind a few things.
The issue is NOT the problem of the forums. The forums work the same on every single browser. The problem is the Theme(s). Think of the forums as the skeleton and the themes as the skin.
I need to know WHICH THEME and WHICH version of IE you guys are experiencing these issues with. If you're having an issue with 1 theme, try another. Do you still have the same issues? different issues? This is the kind of thing that is helpful to troubleshooting the issue.
Why the FUCK are you using IE? The only acceptable answer is that you're tucked away in a 3rd world prison and you use the 30 minutes of internet time a day to come here.
Get (http://firefox.com) a (http://www.apple.com/safari/) better (http://www.google.com/intl/en/chrome/) browser (http://www.opera.com/).
For those of you absolutely positively locked down to IE, I'm sorry. Go to Microsoft and complain to them why their shit isn't rendering things right.
In the mean time. Please feel free to leave your issues in a detailed manner and which browser you're using. If it's something I can reproduce and easily fix, I'll hit it like MiRai hits a sushi roll.

If it helps, when I was reproducing Pinot's original crash, I was using the Blackstealth theme. I wasn't doing anything but browsing and replying to threads. It did seem like it would do it more prominently when I was typing up a big reply. Perhaps there's something to the periodic "autosave" feature that was mentioned previously? Let me see if I can come up with a test case with a higher reproduction rate than "once or twice an hour."
[edit] Just for clarity's sake, I don't use IE and I have never seen this happen on Firefox or the little bit of testing I did on Chrome.

Much as I hate using IE, there are valid cases where people have to use IE. Locked images on work PCs, internet cafes, visiting relatives that only have IE, Windows Mobile Phones and new devices or PCs running Win8 until the kinks in Win8 support in Firefox/etc. are worked out (assuming there are blocking items on Win8 installs).
On a related note, what's the usage stats for IE on here versus the other browsers?

I don't have access to those stats anymore. last I saw was Firefox -> Chrome -> IE -> Safari. Which is why I've never been overly worried about IE.

Just to update this a bit...
Blackstealth theme has issues with IE. Not sure if it's even worth spending time fixing it VS finding a different / similar theme. When a theme locks up a browser by submitting a form, I think there's more underlying issues than just some CSS.

Poking around a bit more with the edit box and such, I was able to crash IE twice just by trying to attach a picture via URL. IE wouldn't render the OK/Cancel buttons unless I resized the dialog, whereupon it would hang as per usual.

My problems were with using VB4 Default Style and IE9. The only way I can post to these forums is use Fire Fox. Why were the forums changed from the old ones?

I have the same issue. What I have been doing is saving my post once I finish typing in Notepad, then hit submit, if it locks up I restart IE 9 and then paste my response back.

For those of you absolutely positively locked down to IE, I'm sorry. Go to Microsoft and complain to them why their shit isn't rendering things right.
What you need to do is call vBulletin or post on their troubleshooting forums for vBulletin4 with the issues that your forum users are experiencing. Do you honestly expect to call Microsoft and be like "Uh hur hur hur, vBulletin doesn't work on your shitty IE browser, herp derp". They will laugh their ass off then hang up.
If some programmer writes an app like say...the amazingly shitty iTunes, and complains that their shitty app doesn't run right and blames the OS, has it completely wrong. Microsoft cannot inexorably help all these software developers debug software that they can't write correctly.
This goes back to the whole Vista sucks! front. People couldn't get their devices to work correctly because manufacturers were writing very buggy drivers for the OS. Naturally, it is Microsoft's fault that the OS couldn't handle the poorly written, untested drivers.
If you update to the latest nVidia/ATI driver release and get less FPS, do you call Microsoft and tell them to fix their OS so the drivers work better?

You're missing the point. My post specifically mentioned what the source of the problem was:
The issue is NOT the problem of the forums. The forums work the same on every single browser. The problem is the Theme(s). Think of the forums as the skeleton and the themes as the skin.
It's not a Vb problem. Vb tech supports 1st step would be to revert to the default style. Negating the issues people are having because they're having specific issues with themes that happen with specific browsers.
