In the interest of boxing, I need will get a pc. It just does not work on Mac. It seems pc is the platform with the Trojans, viruses and all that. What do you guys use for protection? Is the Microsoft security essential program enough? What about performance hit from av software?

I leave Windows Defender on and use Avast! Antivirus. I don't notice any performance issues with Avast running...maybe a little hitch now and then if I get my full-blown scan going, but not enough to bother me. I've heard decent things about Security Essentials, but I've used Avast for years and been happy with it.
I also use MalWareBytes and SecuniaPSI about once a week. People will probably tell you to get a different browser, too. I use Opera with the AdBlock and NotScripts extensions, most people her use FireFox or Chrome.

I use chrome browser and Mcaffe virus/software/malware defender. McAffe does everything in a background and I never see a system slow down from it.

It is a sad thing Xraptorx, that ISboxer doesn't support OSX. This question is interesting to me as well as I'm about to buy a new PC for boxing purposes.
I would give the money I was going to spend on a new PC if someone will develop ISboxer for mac :)
Until then, I'm keen to hear the suite that I'll need to buy for protection

If you're having an issue with viruses and malware in windows, then you're doing it wrong.

Took the words right out of my mouth, except I was afraid to post that due to possibly hurting someone's feelings (which I seem to do a lot here and have posts deleted).
It seems pc is the platform with the Trojans, viruses and all that.
There are several other platforms that are susceptible to Trojans, viruses and all that. When you control ~90% of a market share, I don't think hackers are going to target the 10%.
I use Security Essentials and IE9.
I'm fighting viruses and malware pretty much everyday. I'm in the middle of settling my third identity theft.

QFT I haven't had a virus successfully hit me since...1997? And I did that on purpose. Either way the point stands, it's not like just because you're running Windows you're doomed to have catastrophic virus issues every other day. Especially if you don't use your computer like a cracked out and lobotomized monkey.

Consider keeping minimum files and programs on your gaming rig. Use a gimp computer to run your file server and other operations.

uhm your third identity theft? Sounds like you are doing it wrong too! I don't have problems with viruses or malware. Stop browsing bad porn sites and use Firefox with adblock/NoScript. I havent had to deal with a virus in so long its like they dont even exist.

Combine that with a decent home router (and don't open ports!), using something besides Outlook for email and not opening attachments from people you don't know and you'd be about as likely to get struck by lightning as get a virus.

No need to get a PC, just dual boot with boot camp. Just about any Mac that is running wow should be able to run windows and isboxer just fine.

mac will overheat with 5 boxes running. I just bought the Asus G74SX (256 SSD) and 3GB Video Ram. This thing is nice. Now I need to get a device to let me use my 27" imac as a second monitor for this rig.

I found the cause of your problem.

Can anyone comment on AVG and AdAware?

I use the free version of Avast.
Almost every time I start my computer, it wants me to click the UAC control to allow it to apply an update.
For some reason, it cannot apply any update aside from at start up.
Still, I've had zero issues with viruses/malware and Avast is free.
I run Firefox with Adblock and NoScript.
Have not used AdAware, so cannot comment on that.

I've been using AVG for the last 7 years or so. Have zero complaints aside from the rare false-positive every few months. It's also in my experience a very low footprint, so you don't notice it hogging resources.
I've used adaware on occasion, though since I switched to Firefox + NoScript + AdBlock, the only thing it ever finds is cookies, so I haven't bothered except for once a year or so just to confirm things are still peachy.

Cool thanks.
I've been using the free version of AVG and it seems to work fine (no virus/hack in the last 2years, touch wood) and is barely noticeable.
AdAware i haven't used yet, it was recommended by the NETT magazine I receive as one of the 'do-not-miss' free softwares around

I should note that I'm using the AVG Free edition as I never felt a need to get the other "fluff" that's in the paid version.

As a developer, I hate AVG with a passion. Recently they added a file to the virus / trojan list that is being used in an application I wrote over seven years ago. I have no idea why this particular file was added to the list, but AVG happily quarantined it and caused my application to stop working... Grrr. I've also seen AVG attempt to clean files; fail miserably and get stuck in a constant loop. Ugh. My vote is for Microsoft Security Essentials for the PC. (And Spohos for OSX.) My 2 cents.

+1 to Microsoft Security Essentials. I've been doing IT support for 15+ years and find it works quite well (although nothing is perfect), especially for being free.
