View Full Version : Follow broke

I got both accounts in now. I have seen a few people post about having following issues..well its more than an issue for me.. the follower gets stuck for seconds and its just flat out a PITA to box atm because of it. Has anyone found any kind of fix for it? I'm wondering if its ISBoxer related or game related? follow worked smooth as silk for me in beta.
Kris and I played around with the Focus target during beta. I dunno if that still works now or not, and I havent been in yet. We had one toon set as the focus and the other toon set to follow that target. Its probably the same thing as what you are seeing Lyon, just used in a different way, come to think about it.
Perhaps Kedash may be able to indicate as well.

There was a bug through almost all of beta that broke autorun. Whenever an agent/smuggler in your area went into cover EVERYONE who had that guy loaded would stop autorunning. It is conceivable that this bug now also breaks autofollow?

My accounts got in this morning, so I'll be able to play with this after work today. Hopefully it's not too much of an issue.

na.. I'm playing two SIs atm and the follow bug is non stop for me. No IAs around. It bums me out, its next to unplayable like this. When i look at my video feed, i can see the follower get stuck or run in place for several seconds. if i spam follow, he will eventually start heading to me. On my mains screen it looks like hes with me, then he will vanish, then start catching up. Its some sort of lag between clients. If i swap screens I can control either one with zero lag. It only happens when following.

Lyonheart, it's game related.
I can't even get ISboxer to work on my end and I was having this problem with follow player while playing on two separate computers without ISBoxer and again when my wife got home and was trying to follow my character or I was trying to follow hers.
Someone else on server asked about the issue as well on general chat last night. There's also a short thread about it on SWTOR forums. My luck in playing two characters in this game hasn't been very good.

Don't take my 5 minutes of running around in circles with follow on to be an indication of it working or not.
I do run a pretty beastly computer if that is what you are asking.
GTX 570 SC. 2500k OC'd to 4.9 ghz. 8 gigs of ram. 120 Gig SSD that swtor is running off of. It sounds like once I get in on both and do more than run around in circles testing my settings I will probably run into it.

It MIGHT be server related.. my latency is only 30ish.. my FPS is 100+

Its high enough for this game though.. overkill. My point was its not my rig causing the follow issue. I boxed in beta with this PC and the exact same settings. Something changed from beta to live. Not sure what, but i hope it gets fixed. I'm soloing atm and hate it..knowing I should be able to box. ( grateful to be in early access..but still )

Likewise. My following character keeps rubberband-ing.
However, if I stop moving and wait a minute, the second character eventually does catch up to my main. It just takes a few seconds.

This does seem to be a game issue rather than an ISBoxer issue. I have also tested it on by loading one client on two different PCs and autofollow still breaks. Really annoying.

After leveling my one BH to 12, I will go back and level my second one tomorrow.. Ill just run BT as long as i can stand it. For me, its not a matter of just spamming follow.. that would be fine.. its the follower running in place for 3-10 seconds before he moves.. meaning I have to move like an inch worm.. go forward a few steps..stop and wait.. rinse and repeat.. its a major pain.

I was wondering. Does manually moving the second character pop it out of that desync lag?
I'm gonna try just adding maybe a quick forward tap on my /follow.
i tried setting up a secondary movement keys to my alt to get him back into sync.
Sometimes it would not work until i manually took control of the screen and mouse moved or hard-pressed a movement key.
I even ran into a situation where my alt was running in place and stopped, when i tried to manually move him it would not take any direct inputs, but when i press my follow key on my main machine he came back in-sync and then the character would accept inputs again after that.
Issues are more or less annoying, but i switched from a single box 2 account setup to a 2 box 1 account on each setup. It is more easily controlled and monitored when your using multiple machine+monitor setup, when i see the toon running place i immediately try to get it back in sync. I usually end up auto-running forward and just mouse steering them individually. A pain, but effective at this point.

I made a quick hotkey.
Bound T to forward.
Sends T to all other clients.
Sends Follow to all other clients.
When my dude gets stuck I'll tap T and hopefully that will break the desync. If that doesn't work I'll add it to my follow spam.

I made this a two step.. its works.. its a tad annoying, but it gets the job done and makes it easier to deal with. I keep an eye on the alt, when it stops following.. i just double tap my follow key.. it sends "up" and then follow. 8) its not what we want.. but it makes dual boxing tolerable!

I'm having serious problems getting ISboxer to work period with a single box.
I can't run on two different monitors that are different sizes because I can't press play on the smaller monitor. Clicking on it shifts it to the primary monitor and doesn't render the GUI. In other words no play button. My new 23 inch 120 Hz arrives today at some point so that might fix this problem.
If I run fullscreen stacked, one client randomly closes in quest dialogue if I try to use key repeating to answer the same way on both clients. Mouse broadcasting isn't working across windows with any setup.
I didn't have any luck running multiple clients on one box, so I've spread mine between a laptop and my main box with a cable going to my alt monitor and using isboxer's network mode and synergy for mouse overs between the two systems.

I ran into a similar issue i tested 3 total clients on one machine during beta and it was fantastic. However going into release i could barely get 2 running due to either lag/delay/jitter. Once i moved the second client to my other machines and went back to multiple machines it cleared up quite a bit.

Ok. So here is my verdict on the follow bug.
The pathing has been dumbed down since I last played. It's very stupid now. This may be related to follow desyncing and getting stuck.
Following has also been nerfed. Autofollowing used to accelerate the following character so it would catch up to the leader (this was an obvious nerf as it was insanely exploitable in huttball, though nearly nobody ever used it). Grab the ball, target someone near the endzone and autofollow them and run off at almost 150% speed ;p
I just received an in game reply that it will be resolved in an upcoming patch.

in isboxer, click on your character set and then slot 1.
on the right, theres a box asking for a hotkey, i usually put in F1 here.
do the same for slot 2 using F2

Also, under window layouts. There is an option to only swap when you press the hotkey. I had to do this because sometimes i click in the small window ( through the video feed ) and it would swap, i don't like that, so I made it swap only when I press the hotkey.

I'm just driving both toons at the same time until there's a fix. Left hand on WASD, right hand on the arrow keys. If I have to run a far distance I throw them both on auto-run and just tap the directionals. It's easier with 2, but can't imagine how frustrating it would be with 4.

This is really bad and I sure hope they consider it a bug. I'm 4 boxing and I'm just hating it... When my inquisitors get a real range it'll be better for combats but it's awfull to go around like this.
The worst part is that what I see in the main's screen it's not what's "really" happening. Even if all slaves are getting stuck in place, I still see them following me. I have to have my eye permanently on the second screen where I have the video feeds....
Argh...
Maybe now I'll be talking sci-fi or gray area here (which I want to avoid if that's the case) but isn't there a way of:
- Somehow simulate a follow strobe like Jamba did;
- Keep spamming the actions/steps by keeping the hotkey always down
Using ISBoxer?
Cheers,
A.

I started doing this last night. I was about to give up when I came and read this, it reminded me of how I boxed my cleric and warrior in EQ BEFORE /follow was in. I drove them both at the same time with two keyboards and auto run. I remembered loving multiboxing and the connivance of having a pocket healer. Once /follow went in, It was a dream come true, and every MMO since has had a functional /follow.
So not having follow working is a pain when your used to it working. The fix listed here allowed me to run long distances ( a ton of long runs in this game) All that being said, it still feels like work getting around, but its way better than spamming the up>follow keybind every few seconds. I found when i was at my destination I could use the follow tapping to move from objective to objective, and use the duel steering/autorun method for long runs.
I know this is cold comfort for your four boxers. I can only recommend leveling sets of 2 for a few days, and hope a fix goes in soon. The plan to do maintenance before live, so i hope they have this and other bugs on the plate for fixes soon.

If i could stay in instances, I would.. but you have to do the class quests, and those have your running all over. Using the duel steering method is better, but after a day of doing it, I am exhausted lol, it just takes too much attention and extra work. How the hell did I ever dual box alt-tabbing?
I started back soloing until they fix follow. I keep the alt account on my laptop and run crew missions 8) Even if someone does not multibox like we do, having an extra account for missions alone is hella nice, due to how crew skills work. I suffered long enough to get one of my alt account toons high enough to have the droid, so i can run two missions at a time. I will probably bounce back and forth the next few days, I would like my mission toon to have 3 companions at least.

So I started this too. Dropped one account to do other stuff, while the update comes. But then I toyed around with options that Mosg2 better explained to me, and Im up and going just fine. ESPECIALLY in instances. (Flash Points) Ive been doing FPs over and over, and scoring up some nice gear and cash. What Im also doing, is bringing along one or two more people, and sending off my companions for gathering. Win +win = Win

It works but barely.
If you put your slave toon on follow it will lag behind, rubberband back and forth and sometimes teleport to your master character. it is very annoying but I have been living with it, well, so far.
If you don't keep an eye on the slave you will sometimes discover he/she is half way across the map.
I didn't get a chance to play in the beta with two characters but apparently it worked flawlessly in beta but consumed a lot of resources.

Simply can't take it anymore....
without mods...fine....no Macro humm, alright......but C'MON! Follow is not broke...it's been Destroyed in last patch >_<
My 2nd toon sometimes as soon i press *Follow Party 1* casually goes completely the opposite Direction......even worst she gets stuck in some basic stairs or some lil tiny Rock on floor -_-
I know they trying to reduce lag for the launch ect......but seriously..300mil$?

I keep trying to box, and the follow thing just kills it for me.. its hard work to streer two ( or more ) toons around. What can we do to get their attention? I mean there has got to be a lot more boxers than have posted in this thread. I put in tickets every day and get a generic reply. I don't think they realize how many other potential customers they could get if they would fix this asap.
I was in briefly with 2 accounts, mine + friends. I ran around for about 5 minutes and had no follow issues.
Yo Merc, what server are you on? Im curious if perhaps there is a server difference??

That was a premature evaluation. I basically ran in circles and didn't notice anything. As soon as I started to travel it started to happen.
You don't have to travel at all to see that follow is busted. Stand face to face with another character, target him, and /follow. You turn around and put your back to the person you're apparently following, as if they will be following you!

I have also noticed that the companion to the character on follow never runs anywhere either. She ( in my case, Make ) always walks. We will be fighting and she will show near the middle / end depending on how the fight is going.

It works better, especially at 40. I upgraded my primary follower to the 40 mount and the speed difference helped it stay closer to me.

Ya, I saw that. very discouraging. I continue to put in DAILY help tickets on both accounts.
Soooooo, after scouring over posts and posts. In the event this wasnt clear before, this is the reason Bioware intentionally broke /follow;
Greetings Appology,
Thank you for reporting this bug. Your report has been forwarded on to the appropriate department. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you. Rest assured, we are looking into this.
http://www.swtor.com/community/showthread.php?t=134549
...Follow DID work during first round beta, however there were complaints specifically during Huntball games where the in game mechanic for a companion which also used /follow would speed up to 2 to 3 times the normal speed to catch up when the companion was lagging behind. People were exploiting this, by doing a /follow on the lead player during PvP. So an interrupt was added to break. Whats odd though, is the fix seems quite simple. Code for a CompanionFollow vs a PlayerFollow. Given this still isnt fixed, yet Bioware (obviously), knows about the situation the game problem issue *must be low priority at the moment. Further that, its unlikey the fix will be implemented during a hot fix patch, and is more likey to be introduced in the PTS then on a regular Tuesday Maintenance day... $.02
I continue to put in tickets daily, and bump the thread in the PTR server forum. Enough attention and perhaps it will get its priority increased.

If this is true (I have no reason to think it isn't), it stinks that all of us multiboxers are just suffering from an unintended consequence from a completely unrelated bug fix.
I am happily dual-boxing, as I am quite used to driving a couple of teams in WoW at the same time (duoing transmog runs or even heroics is much more efficient for two teams at once and something I've been doing for a long time). I simply keyboard run one team with my left hand while mouse running the other team with my left, then attack with my left and it passes to both. Works the same for two toons in SWTOR. However, I'm pretty sure I'd be 3 or 4-boxing SWTOR if follow wasn't an issue.
On a bright note, one place I've found in SWTOR where multiboxing works absolutely perfectly: Ship Combat missions! It is great to get my toons on their ships, then turn on mouse broadcasting to select navigation, click on a combat mission, and blow stuff up X2 (and get both toons all the XP and credits at the same time). I make sure and do those every day. :)

The guy who wrote that is parroting what I wrote in a couple of threads early on about follow.
The truth is not many people knew about the bug and it was not widely used. Only a few people I knew of knew about it and we all reported it. My hope was that they would fix it before final so that in final when it became more apparent there wasn't a more drastic "fix".

http://www.darthhater.com/articles/swtor-news/19852-public-test-server-patch-notes-1-1-1-6-12?page=2
Has follow been fixed? Well.. no.. but don't panic!! They've added an item mod table to the supplies area in the fleet. Phew, that's a relief. Even though they removed any need of such tables in Beta, I'm sure you'll all join me in being delighted that they found time to add the now defunct table to the supplies area. (/set sarcasm = false)

I checked the game and actually considered 4boxing it, but with an extremely annoying follow mechanic there is no way I will box it. I am a C++/C# programmer with game programming experience and actually know how the server part of WoW (and most likely also SWTOR) is structured. It is really easy to add follow, especially with the working companion follow already in the game.
If they really had issues because that was abused, they could have simply implemented a check in a matter of minutes. I don't know their reasoning, but it is quite disturbing to me and a slap in the face for every multiboxer.
This might sound arrogant or something, but it really is easy to implement unless there is a huge issue I don't know about

Needless to say, I hope that makes it into the live game, although I won't be downloading the test server right now due to time constraints. If follow is fixed, I'll gladly take up dual boxing more often again. Right now I alternate between playing with my guild and occasionally dual-boxing (usually I have one character running crew skills on one window while I level on another character).

After getting my new RAM installed... I can honestly say that the follow bug is a minor problem. Once you get Sprint at level 14 it's basically not an issue. Every few hundred yards you have to stop for a second or two, and you have to hit follow every 5-6 seconds. It's something you get used to.
I have been hammered at work for the past week but I intend on putting together another manifesto for boxing TOR over the next few days. Maybe this weekend it'll get posted. No promises--I do have a 3 month old in the house :)
Ya sure Mosg? YA SURE!?!?! I stayed online nearly all night and didnt see you at all. I think I may have the only Mosg Grail ever given out. Will you autograph it for me?

Yep, the 1.1 patch goes live on the 17th but the follow fix might not be in the initial patch. Don't get me wrong, I want it to be in there but as of the official forums, the follow fix was added to the test server within the past day or so which might mean they might have it sit there (in test) for a bit longer and add it post 1.1.

Ugh, now I have to decide on what melee team to do, like, NOW. Sigh lol.
For me right now there are really only 4 "melee" teams I would play. Operatives technically are melee but I just have a feeling that they will not shine like the other four would due to their play style.
Marauders, Juggs, Powertechs, Assassins. The first three will play somewhat similarly.
Marauders are actually quite difficult to kill due to 4 defensive cool downs. The damage reflect, the parry buff, the combat invis and the 6s invuln. These can make marauders quite difficult to lock down when they have all 4 up. They have access to two very good single target DPS trees, and then the shared tree with Juggs which turns them into a massive AOE damage dealer.
Juggernaut they are obviously tanky, something to consider however, tank stats only impact physical damage types this means melee attacks and a limited number of ranged attacks. Rage becomes the go to PvP spec for Juggs IMHO as they become monster AOE damage dealers.
PT. Probably slighly more tricky to get the most out of PTs due to the way the camera works and the fact a few of their abilities are cone attacks. One character will often fire in exactly the opposite direction when you use the ability ;p Other than that charge/pull if spec'd for it. Some range, some PBAOE, very rugged. PTs will be a lot of fun no matter what.
Assassin. Great for PvP. Probably the highest survivability of the 4 primary melee. Stealth + force speed is just win. Good utility, some range.
I myself am running two sentinels, they are pretty outrageous, plenty of fun and very satisfying to play. I'm torn on my next group now because I think Shadows/Assassins will be different (no charge) but also fun (stealth) and even more difficult to kill due to the vanish and force speed combo ;p With autofollow fixed in 1.1 the biggest issue preventing a non-charging melee team from working is gone.

Well, Operatives are interesting to me for 4x Acid Blade+Backstab. You'll basically kill anyone in one global cooldown.
I don't like the attack animations for the Marauder at all.
So.... Thinking Juggernauts or Powertechs or Operatives atm.

With warzones 8 man, I think 4 of anything is unfortunately going to lose more often than not.
With operatives you lack mobility, but you have some escapability. You will quickly force everyone you are fighting into max resolve with your stuns and aoe mez. If you are running 4 of something, taking time to setup isn't that useful. I'd run something with max mobility and can move from target to target as quickly as possible. Four marauders might not kill the first guy as quickly as the operatives, they might not kill the second guy as quickly, but they will kill the third, fourth, fifth, six, seventh, eighth and the respawn a couple of times much much faster.
For marauder if you are talking about the 3 second channeled attack after about level 30 you never use it.
If you are stacking 4x anything, I'd HIGHLY recommend juggernauts. Rage tree with the aoe ability will do reliably 4-5k per target with minimal setup, it will reliably do 2-2.5k to every target with no cool downs blown. If you blow ALL of your cool downs/consumbables etc you can be looking at upwards of 7k per target per juggernaut.
