View Full Version : Melee Run Aways

I am currently working on a One healer (shammy) and three melee (DKs) team. I have watched all the videos on read a lot about how others have set their team up so it is going well with one exception. Sometimes one or several of the DKs will run away on me. I have been able to manage it, but was wondering if there is a way to modify my setup to prevent this all together.

I run with the shammy healer as my main and use toggle follow strobing. I have ISBoxer setup using the two step interact with target and attacks on push and release for my four main attacks. (I play DK solo so find it easier to continue to use them in that fashion while boxing). The idea behind this is that while the target moves my guys will update and follow while DPSing. I also have Jamba setup to follow after combat.

Like I already stated this works perfect about 95% of the time, but there are the occasions where I have to toggle follow strobing on in order to get the run away back into the fight. I have noticed that if I push my buttons too fast this happens more often, so more than likely it could just be me.

Anyway, I was hoping someone else may have found an easier way to manage this. Any insight on this would be most appreciated.

Thanks

do you have click to move on and off in your isboxer macros?

other than that it depends on if your main is to far away from the alts to auto follow again when they strobe.

It happens you just gotta keep a manual follow keystroke close.

I'm pretty sure I was close to enough for them to follow after combat so I doubt that is the issue. It also happens during combat, almost like they are headed towards a location other than where I told them to go.

I didn't know about being able to set the click to move to on and off so I mapped those keys and am going to see if that does anything for me. It was set to off prior to me messing with it.

Im running with click to move off in my isboxer macros. I turned it on and it also makes my main, which is my healer move to the target.

Here is how I have my combat keys setup, keep in mind my goal here is to have a two step key press that makes the DKs run to the target and use their moves which I have the key mapped to.

Execute a Step when the Hotkey is: pressed OR released

Step 1: Do Interact with Target in General Key Map -> Self
Actions
Do Interact with Target in General Key Map -> Self (Target: windo: current, Key Map General, Mapped Key: Interact with Target)

Step 2 - DKS (which is my action group containing only my three DKs)
Actions
DKs (Target: Group (all of) DKs
Key Combination

Did I get that right or is there some other way I could set it up to stop the run aways?

Thanks

in your click to move you can change that to All w/o current so that your selected toon will not run.

I seemed to make things worse by messing with the click to move in isboxer. The team went from having occasional run aways to not doing anything at all. After a lot of modifications trying to get it to work I decided to scrap the whole setup and start new following some setup advice from Ualaa found here:http://www.dual-boxing.com/showthread.php?t=33087&highlight=deathknight

I was using this as a reference to setup the team but for some reason couldn't get it to work properly. After resettng my isboxer setup and following the steps below I was able to reduce the my run aways to almost never.

From Ualaa's setup:

Create an Action Target Group, call it Melee.
Add all of your Melee toons to this group.

Now make a new mapped key (I put mine in the General Keymap).
Call it Melee IWT.
No hotkey, nothing in advanced.
One step, Actions:
Send (Your warcraft IWT keybind) to the current window.

Modify whichever mapped keys you use in the FTL DPS Keymap.
In my case, I've modified DPS 1 through DPS 3.

By default we have:
Hotkey: 1
Steps: 1
Actions:
- Do Mapped Key: FTL Assist Me, Target: Current Window
- Send "1" to all windows.

We want to change this a little.
Right click on Steps and add a second step.
Set the mapped key to execute a step on press and release.

Steps 1
Actions:
- Do Mapped Key: FTL Assist Me, Target: Current Window
- Do Mapped Key: Melee IWT, Target: Group (All Of) Melee [or whatever you called the ATG, from the first step.]

Step 2
Actions:
- Do Mapped Key: FTL Assist Me, Target: Current Window
- Send "1" to all windows.

The only other thing I did was change the setting in Jamba to enable mouse clicks on slaves and disable on master and it seemed to fix the issue. This was probably obvious to a lot of you but I haven't played my melee group in a long time so setting it up has been a new learning experience.

Thanks.

IWT (interact with target) is causing them to runaway. Don't use IWT for your melees.

There is nothing wrong with using IWT on melees. That's the best way to do melees. Spamming IWT is what causes runaways.

"Follow strobing" is automated. By nature, it will not compensate for failures as well as a human. There's really no way to prevent it aside from getting used to assuming there WILL be a runaway during a fight and adjusting your keyboard strategy to deal with it. If you don't get one, fine, no worries. If you do, a good keyboard strategy handles it without thinking much. As an example, I have my setup such that my "run forward" key on my main sends "follow me" to the slaves. Makes regrouping after anything basically automatic.

Huh? Dude. I think you're posting in the wrong forum. IWT is THE primary method for playing a melee team in WoW.

In my experience this primarily only happens when you send them to attack a mob that is moving. my only solutions are as follows.
1. have ur dk death grip to start the pull, and only do ur IWT bind after your tank pulls
2. have a bind for step back on all, and after the pull do that then ur IWT bind
3. spam ur iwt bind, it will sometimes make them run in circles around the mob
4. after pull, hit follow then IWT

Like i mentioned before, it seems this happens the most to me when the mob is in motion when i send them in, or in pvp situations, but them running in circles in pvp isn't all that bad of a thing.

you can probably get away in PVE without using IWT on slaves. just follow and attack.

I have /jamba-follow master melee tacked on to my pull macro, so when I throw AS or Hand of Reckoning, only my melee slaves run up to follow me. My IWT key is left as a separate keybind, which I only hit a few times when I get a new target to make sure they are facing the right way and in range. I get runoffs every now and then if I get nailed with a random lag spike or if I get overzealous with my tab key {IWT}, but it's rarely a problem.
