So I noticed that Amazon is selling Cata today for $20. I have been taking a break from wow and kept telling myself that I will come back to playing it at some point, but actually enjoyed my freedom from wow so much that I have not done so. Especially given all the negative things that I heard about it early after release.

After clicking on the review section for the item on amazon, (for those who dont want to click, here's the first review of cata from a user. there were dozens more like it)

W A R N I N G !!!!! I N C O M I N G W A L L O F T E X T. (scroll to bottom if you want to bypass)

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I played WoW for six years and loved it. I downed most raid bosses while they were still relevant, achieved very high-rank PVP (and later Arena) titles, and was even satisfied as a casual player for over a year when my work schedule was rough. Then the Cata beta came along. Over the course of nearly half a year, I dutifully tested every bit of content available and experienced more of Cata than most people have on live, even now. And I hated it so much that I permanently left the game.

So what did beta testers take issue with and the developers ignore?

1. Questing. The quests are fun, but mostly only the first time around as the new "on rails" design requires each zone be done in the exact same order - no choices, skipping, or jumping around. Leveling is also too quick. It took longer to get from level 70 to 75, let alone 80. Even at a leisurely pace, it takes only days to get to...

2. Level 85. Cataclysm raid bosses are split between several raids, but don't be fooled - Naxxramas alone featured more bosses than all Cataclysm raids combined. Cata also has the fewest at-release dungeons of any expansion thus far, profession-related quests which pale in comparison to previous expansions, and few daily hubs. You get to 85 too quickly, and then there's nothing to do besides...

3. Heroics. They are too long for too little reward. For a mandatory (for progression), daily task for the entire expansion, two hours is an outright chore (and it's often still over an hour in epics). Dailies on multiple chars + raid-prep gear grinds = recipe for boredom. But the biggest problem with heroics is...

4. Healing. Universally maligned during the beta, all five specs now have identical playstyles where one spell is spammed ad infinitum. There's some variety when raid healing, and your overall healing done per spell may vary, but one spell will dominate your time spent casting. To ensure hour-long queues, Blizzard also targeted the other vital group role...

5. Tanking. Skill- and control-based mechanics have been replaced by DPS-like rotations. Tank cooldowns are now along the lines of "Reduce damage by 10% for 10 seconds" - you don't even notice you've used a special ability. The changes to tanks and healers were part of a bigger problem...

6. Homogenization and loss of replay value. If you have one tanking or healing class, you have them all. The differences are superficial, and with few talent and glyph choices, even DPS classes all provide essentially the same experience. Every instance is the same, every character is the same, every day is the same - the game feels like a second job instead of an escape. There was only one thing left to screw up...

7. PVP. The imbalances are worse than at any point in WoW's history, and that's saying something. Tol Barad is an unmitigated disaster, with mechanics that were so poorly thought-out that it's mind-boggling. The "new" battlegrounds are quick clones of Warsong Gulch and Arathi Basin (Battle for Gilneas even displays AB node names at the start of games, to make it clear just how little work was put into it). Rated BGs are regular BGs with 90-minute queues.

Anyways, with the help and advice of the veterans of this forum, I actually had built a new computer specifically for 10 boxing wow. But given the tepid responses that I heard before and the reviews that I just read, I'm not sure if spending $200 on 10 cata is warranted?

From a multiboxer point of view. or hell, from a soloist point of view. Would you guys say that the above sample review is still an accurate state of the game? Would you recommend for a lapses boxer to return? Or should I spend my time on better games? seeking opinions, no wrong answers here, just answer today if possible so I can jump on the $20 tax-free price at amazon if you recommend I go back. :p

Thanks in advance!

thats a good deal.. now if we could find wrath on sale! You can get the battle chest for 20 bucks and cata for 20 now. But wrath is still 40ish

If you don't have it, you are not likely to find it cheaper.

If you intend to multibox 5 or 10 clients go with it you wont find another game to do that as easy as it goes with wow. If you just intend to play another game probably dualboxing I'd stay away from wow and try some other games.

I pretty much agree with that review. Biggest problems for me were homogenization and railroading of quest lines. I'm not usually someone who sits at end game for a long time. I tend to level alts and go back and do older raids (MC, etc.) that I didn't get to do while they were current. The replay value died with Cata for me.

It's still the best MMO on the market in terms of maturity, ease of multiboxing, UI customization/feedback, addons, stability of the client and probably immersion value as well.

Not looking forward to paying $37 x4 just to get my needed copies of wrath. Why hasn't it went on sale yet?!?!

Maybe all the rumors and news of wow hitting a sharp decline outside china aren't as unfounded as people claim and cata keeps going on sale to try and lure more ex players back in hopes of getting them hooked again.

I've noticed deals on the expansion for months now where you can almost always get it cheaper than wrath.

It did... 2 months ago at Best Buy. I've got my fingers crossed for an Independence Day sale. Everyone else
should cross their fingers as well.

so, just ordered 2 copies of the battle chest and cata from amazon.com (no sales on .ca). i tried to get wrath at $34.99, but they wouldn't ship it to my area for some reason. very odd, hope i can find it cheaper than 49 here in town.

Digital copies of Vanilla/BC are both 9.99 through the Blizzard store for a total of $19.98 with instant delivery of
the keys.

EDIT: Not sure how that prices out in Canada?

This is just one opinion, of course. I'm only posting in an attempt to go against the "impending doom" that a lot of posters here like to convey. But my feeling is that this is the best expansion by far in for both solo play and multiboxing. In regards to there being "nothing to do", I disagree. There is LESS to do, but that can be a good thing as well. I sure as hell don't want to run the same raids twice every week (10 and 25 mode) like in Wrath. The content is better quality, but less in quantity, and thankfully means I feel less obligated to spend so much time playing WoW.

I disagree with your comments about tanking and healing. I single-box raid as both, and using ALL spells in the toolbox for every class is much more amusing than Rejuv blanketing the entire raid. Wrath healing was very spammy and didn't require much thought.

While the "questing on rails" thing might be horribly annoying with phasing for us multiboxers, at least there's some "story" that can be followed for each zone. I don't know about you, but I like the story aspect much more than the ease of getting 10 gold for a "find me 8 boar hides" type quest over and over again.

I also posted a little something about my opinions on the new talent trees and class design: http://www.dual-boxing.com/showthread.php?p=337876#post337876

Admittedly, some aspects of the game are more difficult than in Wrath, like 5-man heroics. But isn't that why we multibox? For the challenge?

After I made that statement Blizzard announced you can only buy Battlechests now. If you have existing
Vanilla keys they are now automatically considered a Battlechest. Still unknown if you have only a BC key.
See the other thread.

Well darn. I'll be crossing my fingers this weekend then.
On a semi-related note, newegg is having an Independence Day sale but I don't have a clue yet what kinda gear they will be offering up.

We had a rather busy, 17-page thread (http://www.dual-boxing.com/showthread.php?t=34169) going with a lot of back and forth on Cata. From my point of view, Cata was a massive disappointment. All my accounts have been closed since February. My husband has sworn off WoW and it would take something pretty massive to get him back. I, on the other hand, have been waiting for anything at all to bring me back and I'm still waiting.

I need a Cata upgrade for my 5th toon, since I was running with my husband when Cata came out and when I go back, I'll need to replace him. I *know* I'm going to need the expansion at some point, but I just can't convince myself to buy it. As much as I LOVE {I really do, I'm masochistic} leveling new teams, the idea of going through the Cata zones and dealing with those craptastic quests again makes me ill.

I love multiboxing and really, really miss multiboxing in WoW. I get ideas in my head for things I want to try or changes I want to make to my setup and I get all giddy about it, but then I think about actually logging in and remember how friggin bored and annoyed I was with Cata. Everyday I look for a Blue post that hints that something worthwhile is happening, but patches are insanely slow to come out this expansion. At this point, I'm starting to think it's going to be Brewfest that brings me back and not anything new.

So, babbling aside, if you intend on playing WoW at any point in the future, it's worth buying, cuz you'll need it before installing the next expansion. It's always worthwhile to avoid paying full price for half an expansion.
