View Full Version : [WoW] Need some Holy Pally advice...
(I left the font alone, for those who have issues with the color).
Got a few questions.
Now have a pally at 85. Item level at 334. Holy. Part of a team. But failing hard. So I decided to run the pally solo for a bit. Heroics seem to be a tough match, if not impossible sometimes.
I cant link wowamory profile from work, but the Toon is (Eredar Server - Horde - Fridge Raiders guild, name= Hospipality.
I do not understand the whole Holy power thing.
I know some spells are situational.
Holy Light = most spammed heal to keep the healing constant
Divine Light = when a big heal is needed, and I have the time to cast the 3 sec cast
Flash Heal= Oh shit moments
LoH= Oh shit isnt even an option.. more like "Just got knocked into whelps, gonna ony wipe if I dont"
Holy Shock= every time its ready, click it
Guardian= every time its ready, click it.
Is this correct? is there more to this? I really just dont get holy pallies. I "feel" like im healing correctly, but going OOM and seeing the tank take a beating while Im spamming heals, and hes not going up, has me considering that I just dont know what Im doing.
Sorry about the general wow post about class crap, but I posted something similar on forums and got flamed for being a noob... "uhhh no shit, thats why im asking... @@"

I'm sorry if I'm coming across as rude, I went to EJ to try and maybe find some simple answers for you, but they're holy paladin post is actually really good. There's a bunch of math and shit too if you're into that :P.

I would check it out, might give you a better idea of what to cast and when, because I know Holy Paladin is kind of one of those classes that's always been kinda easy to play, but hard to really be good at.
If you have a lot of experience in previous expansions with healing, but haven't really been exposed to it much in Cata, i can tell you its a lot different. I noticed on my druid that its really more about spending the least amount of mana possible, and knowing when to "blow your load."
After looking at your gear I'd say to reforge to some haste, or spirit if you're having mana regen issues, after giving EJ a quick browse your stat priority is Int > SP > Crit > Haste > Mastery.
Your spec is also a little off.
I hope I'm not being rude by telling you to go read EJ, but it is a great source, and I'm just trying to be helpful because I have played ZERO holy paladin in Cata, I have however healed all of the content minus hardmodes on my druid. I know when my friend started out when Cata first dropped he had issues, but then once he got more heroic gear it got a lot easier for him.
Not at all. Im at work right now, and many wow related sites such as EJ.com are blocked. When Im at home, I get involved in home stuff, family stuff, RL stuff, then finally get some MB time... by that time, Ive forgotten all about looking online.
I read it some however. I do know I need 646 spell crit, all the int I can get, and then haste or mastery. Most places tell me to ignore spirit. That gear will provide enough for what a pally needs.
I think specifically I got my spell choice wrong, or spell combos wrong, or the spec wrong.

Holy power stacks up to 3. You can gain some and then decide to spend them. Holy shock will grant you a stack of holy power per time used. So can be used on CD.
To use your holy power you can basically chose between world of glory, which is a free (no mana) heal and light of dawn which is a aoe heal.

You have beacon of light. You cast it on a player and it lasts for 5 minutes on them. What it basically does if you cast any heal, that player will get an additional 50% of the heal when he is beaconed. So say you put your beacon on Jeff who is the tank, and Joe, John & Jim are your dps, and if you cast a Holy light heal on Joe for 10k then Jeff will get a free 5k heal. If you heal Jeff for 20k heal, he will also get a 10k extra heal since he is beaconed.
Another important mechanic of holy paladins is using your judgment on the enemy, it basically returns mana (apart from some minor damage). But it also gives you Judgements of the pure buff, which increases your spell haste.
So the main tip is = use your holy power correctly, both in generating it and using it; set your beacon correctly (tank most likely) and use your judgement spell as much as possible to get mana back and keep your haste buff up.
I've only played holy at the start of the expansion in pvp, but class basics are more or less the same.
But a good tip is get some guide as a reference point. No need to read it through straight away, but whenever you have a question about a mechanic you can quickly look it up. mmo champion, the official wow forums, ... etc basically any forum has this or that guide up (google 'holy paladin pve 4.1 guide)
Edit: someone was apparently faster than me :)

Zenga covered it but to reinforce it ... you mana issues go away if you put judgement into the spam macro on the same target your minions are on to avoid threat issues. If you judge every CD you will not go out of mana. Alnd use might for the regen as well and alot of +int +spirit gems initially. There are some great JC trinkets out there to help you out as well if you can get them and are a JC.

Alchemy trinket is REALLY good too if you're an alchemy whore like myself. That mixed with a 67 int gem = 378 int and some haste on a trinket :)
Hmmm, So I forgot about Beacon. I have been using that for the melee toon, and not the tank. I read somewhere that the beacon cant grant the 50% if you are healing itself. I think it was a blue post too. Ill have to see if I can find it.. Course it may be old info.
Ive not been using the holy power, Nor have I been using the Judgement spell.
I typically keep the tank in Concentration Aura, unless I hit a particular nasty boss and need Resistance aura. Is that the right one for the judgement to return mana?
I also typically keep up Seal of Insight, however the healer isnt hitting anything with melee.
Im gonna take this advice and do some tests with the beacon and the judgement. Perhaps that, and respecing a little may help.
Thought I would throw this back over the wall, and say Thanks.
I did indeed respec somewhat. I also had forgotten about my Glyphs. Thats since been corrected as well. The enchantments are a little light, but this toon is self skilled and still leveling enchanting.
My rotation now includes the Judgement spell, Beacon Spell on tank, and I am actively watching the Holy Power for use of WoG and the AOE heal (forget the name right off).
Mana is no longer an issue, and the general healing has improved. I plan to keep this toon solo for another week or so, and fine tune the healing method, before I reintergrate back into the team.
thanks again.

I'd just add that never use divine light unless you have the divine light/holy light proc that reduces it's cast time. If you need a big heal then you generally don't want to wait another 3 seconds for it to land and if you do your tank might die to some unexpected burst.

If you want to 'improve' further, grabbing an addon like power auras does wonders to manage procs. It makes your procs visual rather than a simple square.
This one (http://powerauras.wikispaces.com/Holy+Paladin+4.9) might be an idea (basically just copy all from that site and then in /powa chose import and paste).
thanks! Zenga ill check it out.
@ Kekkerer, yup, I found this out the hard way on the first boss in halls of orig. lol whoopsie. cast time too long.
As to having sites blocked at work or where ever:
Did you try to google translate it?
I do that some times at work...

I work for a technical engineering and development company. We have an entire division to developing and producing our own software. Theyre pretty damn good. Sometimes, If I am wary about a particular website for virus's, I'll attempt the download and execute at work. The virus protection here is amazing.

Don't forget about Holy Radiance, it's your big AoE heal. Pop that with your CD's during heavy AoE damage. Your group will go from 50% to full health in no time.
If you have a melee heavy group, Light of Dawn (Holy Power AoE) is a great source of heals - all the heals contribute to Beacon of Light heals on your tank so you get some good bang for your buck. If you have a caster heavy team, Word of Glory is a nice mana free heal.
As far as crit goes, my experiences with it have been lackluster. I found it didn't help much (sorry I don't have data). I reforged it all to haste, mastery and spirit (if a piece didn't already have spirit on it). Healing has been smoother since then. In 4.2 with 200% crit heals, crit will be much more useful.

another thing that is nice is with beacon @ "tank" and a "@tank cast holy light" the tank will be getting 2 heals. Paladin healing is incredibly nice as the healer will normally get a heal that will proc back through beacon for another heal on the tank. For mana efficient healing I normally use holy light vice flash or my big heal (@ work and not looking at my UI)... so my continual through put keeps tank nearly topped off and the rest of my crew going.
But as all the other portions of this thread have stated paladin's are easy mode heading. Between the bubbles, Blessing of Sacrifice, beacon, etc... you can bleed or mitigate alot of damage going into the "tank" while plugging away.
