View Full Version : [WoW] Advanced Video Settings

First, I'd like to give a big thanks to Fef and his original thread (http://www.dual-boxing.com/showthread.php?p=300650) which inspired all of this.

It seems a few people have been asking lately about dynamic window swapping macros or which console commands control which video settings. This is an almost complete guide that has been written up to break down and explain each console command for World of Warcraft's video settings. The guide was started somewhere around the beginning of May 2011 and has evolved into what it is today.

Enjoy...

Updated for patch 5.0.4 Mists of Pandaria.

the wiki didn't include a low quality settings macro, this is mine:

/p LOW GRAPHICS
/console groundEffectDensity 16
/console groundEffectDist 1
/console horizonfarclip 1305
/console farclip 177
/console characterAmbient 1
/console smallcull 1
/console skycloudlod 1
/console detailDoodadAlpha 1
/console spellEffectLevel 9
/console projectedTextures 0
/console waterDetail 0
/console rippleDetail 1
/console reflectionMode 0

Being able to toggle the projected textures with your macro seems really important to me as you MUST have projected textures for a lot of things but it eats up frames if you have it turned on x5

and thanks so much for that article!

is spellEffectLevel an obsolete setting?

MiRai

/console characterAmbient 1
/console smallcull 1
/console detailDoodadAlpha 1
/console spellEffectLevel 9

As far as I know... these settings are obsolete with Cataclysm.

There is also some good infos here at least as to Nvidia GPU's, as to getting the best WoW performance from your video card.

How can you put this into ISBoxer so that when you focus on a window it gets the settings that are high, and the slaves are automatically set to minimal?

Oh and your site seems to be broken Sam DeathWalker

Make a Mapped Key with your desired video settings in it and tie it to that.

I'm assuming this will affect your swapping time pretty heavily depending on your system.

Also, dependent on how many settings you change and by how much. I explain it slightly more in the actual
Wiki entry itself. The past week I had been refining my own setup and I've found very nice settings that work
well for me (at least so far) with almost no noticeable increased swapping lag.

I discovered this awhile back but when switching to different screens, you can also have the slaves switch off their ui. that will also greatly increase fps on main screen if your computer has any trouble rendering say 5+ ui's

It's less than you might think. ;)

I remember that older thread of yours but, it's not very handy for people who rely on ISBoxer's Repeater
Regions or VideoFX for mouseover healing (or whatever else they're doing and need to see the UI).

Just have a question about this part.

Assuming we create 2 keymaps, one for high quality and one for low quality.

Now, we assign our high quality keymap to be triggered when we switch to that character how do we easily have the rest of the clients now switch to the low quality?

Is it possible to do it automagically or would we bind a key to execute the macro in Windows: All w/o Current?

You can make a single keymap with separate targets. I have a single keymap with my video settings, my
camera angles, and CTM (for both main and slaves) all in one keymap to be executed when I swap screens.

High Detail -> Window: Current
Low Detail -> All w/o Current

I have a noobish question here. I created the high and low keymaps and then added a do key map action in my window switch map (follow/jamba master). All of my toons switched to high settings and i'm quite sure 'low' is set to all without current.

Perhaps I created the high/low map wrong? I did the new wow macro action, target current, put in a keystroke and pasted my high settings. then did the same with target all w/o current for the low settings.

On a side note I tried using super duper macro to create the macro in game as it exceeds the character limit, however it is very buggy with my other addons and crashes when I do anything with it just about. Is there another addon similar to sdm?

thanks for any insight :)

Camera angles - can you share those? My healer always seems to change to an angle where the camera looks right into his ear ...

If the targets are set correctly, I have no idea why it wouldn't work. These slash commands are a very basic
and straightforward way to alter in-game video settings. The settings do not conflict with each other and are
made to work together in harmony.

Also, why not make the macro in ISBoxer?

wow, i completely forgot about the game helper in isboxer now. Thats going to be the problem, because i was using a wow macro action and it was expecting something in game I imagine to be pushed. I will try that out right away, knew it was something silly.

Anyone having trouble with one (or more) windows crashing when using this? I started doing it a few days ago and every night, at some point, one (or more) windows crashes when I switch to it. Very annoying. Works great when it's not crashing though. I've tried switching everything from DX11 to DX9, but that didn't help.

Yup, same thing is happening to me. So far only my tank or main toon has crashed. I have the jamba set master in the same key map that does the video switching. Not sure if that has anything to do with it.

You may have to tone down what settings you change. If you set them all tot super high and have your other wow's open, uppon changing your games may crash when attempting to change windows and adjust the video settings. Try starting at medium and go from there. I always like the max view distance and particle density myself.

I'm about to get to work on my setup for this now, its been a while since I initially wanted to set this up. It will take some playing with to get it right, but it'll get me a little more edumicated with ISBoxer :D

Here's my settings I've come up with

Low Graphics

/console groundEffectDensity 16
/console groundEffectDist 1
/console farclip 185
/console projectedTextures 0
/console waterDetail 0
/console rippleDetail 1
/console reflectionMode 0
/console particleDensity 10
/console environmentDetail 50
/console violenceLevel 5
/console SunShafts 0
/script setView(4)

High Graphics

/console groundEffectDensity 64
/console groundEffectDist 160
/console farclip 1250
/console projectedTextures 1
/console waterDetail 2
/console rippleDetail 3
/console reflectionMode 3
/console particleDensity 80
/console environmentDetail 125
/console violenceLevel 5
/console SunShafts 2
/script setView(5)

I kept a few things out from this that I didn't care changing for either high settings or low settings.

What are the lowest with /console i can run
so these settings for example

/console groundEffectDensity 16
/console groundEffectDist 1
/console farclip 185
/console projectedTextures 0
/console waterDetail 0
/console rippleDetail 1
/console reflectionMode 0
/console particleDensity 10
/console environmentDetail 50
/console violenceLevel 5
/console SunShafts 0
/script setView(4)

like in the last post. Is this as low as you can go to run the most efficiently? while 15 boxing usually pretty well on all lowest settings (in wow menu) but i wanna lower them even more because when in large fights like AV my characters lag out some times

basically what im asking what is the lowest settings possible you can run on all of those? and safely. seems when i run macro posted above i get crashing issues now and dont know how to fix them lol??!

I use IS Boxer.

High Settings is a mapped key, that is executed by the current window on a swap.
Low Settings is a mapped key, that is executed by all of the other windows on a swap.

Like many addons for macros, IS Boxer lets you use much larger macros than the default 255 characters.

dang i didnt know that. ill look into that right now. thanks :)

also what about running DX11 instead of DX9. is DX11 more efficient or will it bog system down more?

DX11 requires more system resources at higher settings. I couldn't tell you how efficient DX11 is compared to DX9 because DX11 offers visuals in the game that DX9 cannot. While it takes more system resources to use it, that doesn't necessarily mean it's less efficient.

Ualaa, why do you set projectedtextures to 0 for both? It may not be needed for pvp, but is crucial for some PVE boss fights. The AOE ground damage really hurts.

Ualaa

I don't do PvE, at least have not done any since Ulduar was the highest raid content in the game.
If you need the setting for PvE, change the setting :)

I adjusted the settings downwards, from what Fef had originally posted in the first thread... that inspired this one, until I was totally smooth even in mass pvp.

I don't like sound enabled in game either... so have it set to disable that.
If for some reason my wow sound gets enabled, IS Boxer will disable it on all toons with a swap.

I would think that Projected Textures would be useful for keeping your stealthers out of something that could possibly knock you out of stealth, no? Also, can you see Ring of Frost with Projected Textures disabled?

Ualaa

I have no issue seeing Rings of Frost, the area on the ground which snares you (from Necrotic Strike), Consecration/Death & Decay/Blizzard/Rain of Fire, etc.

I dont have the on or off macros but here is one that will toggle sound off and on.

/run local c = "Sound_EnableAllSound"; local s = GetCVar(c) or "0"; if s == "1" then SetCVar(c, "0") else SetCVar(c, "1") end

Updated the Wiki entry to reflect any initial changes I saw:

farclip default values have been changed to make more sense (and raised)
componentTextureLevel values have been changed to make more sense
SSAO added
SSAOBlur added
baseMIP removed
Do not use the examples at the very bottom of the Wiki page as they're not up-to-date

Necro indeed. Stumbled across this and wondered if it still applied or is there a new/better way to do the same thing in isboxer? (current window = high vid settings & all others = low vid settings.)

I'm pretty sure nothing has changed from MoP to WoD, but the Wiki has since been removed, so the full set of variables is likely lost. Currently, I only change my View Distance (farclip) on swap and it causes an ever-so-slight bit of stutter. Changing things like Texture Resolution and Shadows on the fly, from low to high, are likely going to destroy the time it takes to swap windows, but I'm not entirely certain on that.

Right on. I thought destroy too, but a few pages back others said barely noticeable swap lag. I think I can find the vars online or in the api, but I wondered if anybody was doing this now, and how is it working out for them. (i.e. is it worth it?)

Stumbled across Khat's 5-box fishing . . . so now that's on the ever-growing to-do list fueled by this site. ;o)
