Is it a powered USB port?
Usually if it's connected directly to the PC or notebook, the answer will be yes.
However for most extenal devices that have their own USB ports, those ports will not be powered. An example of this is the two USB ports on the front of the G15 - they provide USB connectivity, but are not powered. In other words you can't charge an Ipod or cordless mouse with them.

actually, im not sure.. if it doesnt come on then its probably not. thx for the help.
EDIT: fixed it. seems like the front 2 USB ports are powered ports and the ones in the back for the keyboard and mouse arnt. looks like i have to use a front slot for my keyboard :/

The G15 also has a light switch, better make sure that is not the real cause for the darkness.
Every USB port should have 500mAh power output. Its just that some devices are assuming that a bit more is available, which is not allways the case. That is where the tip with the hub with a power supply is comming from.
I never have any issues with mine with the lighting but the display drivers seems a bit iffy at times. It just chooses when to work for me, so who know maybe a updated driver for the dispay is available.
