I'm playing around with a 5 hunter group just for kicks. Only level 24 right now.
For my pets I play it more like I'm triple boxing in that I have 3 buttons for sending the pets in to attack. Two of the buttons each control two of the follower's pets while one button controls the main's pet. A fourth buttons sends all 5 pets to the main characters target.
I have it setup where holding down control and pressing one of the 3 buttons will set the target for those pets but not actually send them yet. When ready, I hit CTRL-1 to send the pets to 3 different targets to start the fight.
I give up easy individual control on all 5 but it sure simplifies things to deal with them as if there were just 3 pets.
I've specced the followers as MM while the main is BM. So I have one "super-pet" while the others work in teams of two. I'm using boars right now with charge so they can get to the targets quickly most of the time.
So I'm learning. Don't know how far I'll go with these guys (actually 1 guy, 4 gals) but its a ton-o-fun.
