View Full Version : The new Wiki
I checked out and registered on the new wiki but the main page isn't even populated so... Are we supposed to just go at it or give Wilbur some time to setup some sort of structure?

I appreciate the enthusiam on the wiki, I've never actually used one before ><
I'll let Wilbur decide on that, hope he sees this thread ^^

The main thing I'm concerned with at the moment is getting content on there.
Formatting isn't even an issue, as I'll be reviewing stuff nigh on continuously and formatting it. I'd appreciate all help I can get with getting stuff on there.
A lot of the guides we have on here cover a wide variety of topics. The aim is to break things down so its far more managable and read-able.
I'm aiming to section things as "beginner topics" "advanced topics" "Class specifics" and tactics.
I'll write a more detailed post when I've got time, friday evening is a busy time for me ;)

I'm happy to assist/participate, but not too familiar with the generic "wiki rules" and such. I could also check a wiki to read the wiki rules, I suppose. Heh.

Definitely a "Getting Started" which breaks down:
1. Hardware - could cover How Many WoW clients per machine, ranging from CPU, Video, and RAM.
Then to actually go to a "Working Solutions to Multi-Box"
1. Hardware Solution - covers Xkeys, Wireless Mouse, etc. There's a lot of good links found here in this forum.
2. Software - covers KeyClone, Autohokey, Octopus, etc. I'd let the authors of those software maintain this part in the wiki.
Then to character creations - "Defining Goal" topics
1. PvE - list various combinations. Each section can have "Class" broken down by Roles (tank, healer, dps) with their respective link to Talent Specs already in other wiki pages.
2. PvP - list various team combos.
Another section I can think of is "Levelling as multi-box"
1. Topics that cover Normal play, Quest Play, other links to Guides, even free guide, guides without collection.
2. Topic about power-levelling with a higher level + lowbies. Aoe Grinds. What instances.
Another topic is "Level 70 & Gearing your Team"
1. Perhaps add "trade skills" for multi-boxers if they choose.
2. Other possible gearing up strategy with the upcoming 2.4.
3. What instances are do-able. Heroics.
Then add the info about where to find other Multi-Boxer.
1. What servers, alliance / horde. US / EU.
2. Other games where Multi-Box is possible. DaoC, etc.

I would add "multiboxer instance boss tactics" to the list. I have read some very helpful ones on the site. Not always the same strat as the typical fight.

ok to add a page I found you can do this.
1st use the search function, for example: "Keyclone".
If there is no search results it will say
There is no page titled "Keyclone". You can create this page ('http://www.dual-boxing.com/forums/../wiki/index.php?title=Keyclone&action=edit'). click on create page and then done, so what Wilbur will do is collate all the pages made into some kind of order.
Just add or edit content, if you add content and there is already something of that nature then either your input will be copied and pasted into something better or merged or deleted.
PLEASE dont feel bad if your content is deleted, we cant have duplicates, but more than likely things will be merged.
Bravo

Hope you guys don't mind... I went ahead and started on a page.
http://www.dual-boxing.com/wiki/index.php/Instances
Thinking that this can be used as an index. Clicking on the instance will take you to another page with any tips and tactics, what group composition and level was able to fully clear it... etc.
I added the basic info for 3 of the beginning instances. It'll need to have some sort of formatting because it's VERY plain-jane, just wanted to get the basic info there to get started.

In agreement with Majestic here, just add anything and everything you like, wiki is there for a wealth of information Wilbur will be handling the structure of it, to make it nice and neat :)

I added some Kara pages, but I'm having problems adding embedded images to the pages.
Example:
[[Image:http://v-boxing.net/blog/media/blogs/vblog/moroes.jpg]]
The wiki page makes it a URL link to:
http://www.dual-boxing.com/wiki/index.php/Image:Http://v-boxing.net/blog/media/blogs/vblog/moroes.jpg
Of course, I'm a wiki nub so I'm doing this as I go... Could be totally off with the syntax.
I'd be more than happy and very excited to do a gear guide at level70. Ive had experiences with shamans and warriors mainly at 70 but I've also been raid leader through TK&SSC So im farmiliar with the requirements that people need to achieve. It would probably be the best topic I could do.
I think it would be a great idea if there was a profile page or something, where you can see the avid boxers setups, specs, layouts, characters, armories, and so on.
For Example
-
<Group Title>
<Main Chars>
<Profile>
-
The Optimen
4 Shamans & 1 Druid
http ://www.dual-boxing.com/wiki/profiles/optimen/
-
and where it links to the persons own edited profile.
I took the initiative and started creating a gear guide wiki
http://www.dual-boxing.com/wiki/index.php/Level_70_Gear_Guide I am nowhere near finishing it, is it over the top or does it not cover enough?
I havnt added it to the start page yet.

Hello :)
I'm not that wiki specialist you are looking for, but I highly suggest to
a) disable anonymous editing. Spammers love Wikis and reverting changes on a mediawiki is a real pain.
b) make use of categories. Very often pages are added without categories and the're very hard to find afterwards.
c) Think about templating. Sites like instances, class descriptions, Guides and so on can have their categorys and/or beauty added automatically with a template. Since I'm a real WoWWiki.com Fan I suggest at least one template for stubs / todo pages. (see here ('http://www.wowwiki.com/WoWWiki:Find_or_fix_a_stub') how it works)
d) Since WoWWkis Content is released under GNU General Publuc License there would be nothing about copying parts over here (like guidelines, information, styles) :)
I'm using / maintaining some mediawiki installations for my company and other organizations and I'll try to help here as I my time allows me to :)
Hope it helps making our wiki an really informational an good resource for beginners and log time multiboxers :D

Technical Infos to my post. Most users are not required to read here ;)
a) Edit the LocalSettings.php and add:
$wgGroupPermissions['*']['edit'] = false;
More info here ('http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:Preventing_access#1.5_upwards_2'). Additional Spamfighting info is available here ('http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Anti-spam_features') .
b) See Category Policy ('http://www.wowwiki.com/WoWWiki:Policy/Category') on Guidelines.
c) How to create templates and usage can be found here: http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Help:Templates
I'd like to see in a participate in a 'setup' section which showcases our rigs and details them. There are a lot of questions from beginners on that and wading through the screenshots forum can be tiresome and over time we lose things like Ellay's setup for example. I'll try and get on at some point and post what I think would be a good template and everyone can just have at it if you all think it's worth pursuing.
Ok, I've got my setup documented sans picture. Document yours if you're so inclined. Wilbur, change it around however you may like (or delete altogether if you don't), I'm all for a consistent look and format.
Obviously feel free to incorporate my guide with the mix.
What we DO need is a "I am new and I want to just get started, what do I need" section.
Then branch it off into a more elaborate and advanced setup.
We need a macro guide, an addon guide and a guide to the different softwares (and hardwares) available. Something like the forum posts but authoritative and not always getting shuffled around. This site has a TON of useful information but it is getting more and more buried as more posts are well, posted.
I also agree that we should have a "show off your rig" section with specs.
Maybe a instance walk through video / strategy section.
Lastly, how about some PvP and PvE specific information and a basic "FAQ" for new boxers that have those "ah ha" moments (like movement or getting better fps) tricks and tips that may not be obvious to a new boxer.

What we DO need is a "I am new and I want to just get started, what do I need" section.
This would be great.. Has anyone ever establised the true "minimum" computer requirement to 5 box on a single machine? I know there are other factors, but I believe if there were a Multibox basic set up that wasn't as cost prohibitive more people would be interested.
I think the Rig section I'm trying to start should handle the minimum requirements bit. I think there are too many variables to make a simple guide to say it all. By posting as many of our setups as possible people can extrapolate where they're at vs. what's proven to work. Everybody comes into this with some hardware we've seen setups ranging from 5 individual boxes to single quad core boxes now. Full hardware broadcasting to full software, etc.

p.s dont forget to add IRL photos so we can put a face to to it;P

ATM it is not possible to upload any kind of images to the wiki :(
Tried it yesterday cause I wanted to add some icons to the Main Page :)
Hopefully Ellay will fix it in the next days.
What I would love to have would be the community portal for "internal things" like ToDo Lists and Wiki Howtos to get people as fast as possible started with wikifying their content :)

I think a good guideline for software boxing is each WoW should ideally have 1 core and 0.75GB of RAM. You can get by with less, but you will suffer on framerates. For graphics, maybe we could have a list of cards that should be able to handle 2, 3, 4, etc clients. For example:
4 clients-
Nvidia 8800 Ultra
Nvidia 8800 GTX
Nvidia 8800 GTS 512 (G92)
ATi 3870 X2
3 clients-
Nvidia 9600 GT
Nvidia 8800 GT
ATi 3870
ATi 3850
2 clients-
Nvidia 8600GT
etc...

1. I added a quick FAQ that ends in a few links...
2. I added a TOC and ordered the page a bit in to sections as recommended by sanctume
3. I forgot to add comments for half of the edits...
4. Feel free to roll back anything I did, I ain't too proud lose any of that stuff.

As suspected this will eventually happen:
http://www.dual-boxing.com/wiki/index.php/Wiki/index.php
http://www.dual-boxing.com/wiki/index.php/Talk:Main_Page
i removed the level70 gear guide, it was going to be long and not all that great. I have got klrwlf to add the links to wow-loot.com to the class selection, maybe ill make a simplified version later on.

I think we need to lock it down to users only not anon changes. I took the liberty of removing the trash.
New to the wiki!
http://www.dual-boxing.com/wiki/index.php/Videos
There is a basis for work, maybe on the front page where i've added === Media === we can have another category, boxing related news articles like we saw of 2x5man kara on that news site, i cant remember what its called now:P

I have started a Human Interface Device section, just populated with G15/11 and X-keys but it is a start.
I also imported some of the mediawiki help pages. This should help people with mediawiki wiki script ;)
