View Full Version : [WoW] Best class for powerleveling?

I have not seriously bothered to powerlevel any characters by running through dungeons, mainly because i had no max level toons until very recently. When my second team gets to 85 i will have one of every class except warrior and rogue at 85.
So my question is: what is the best class for instance boosting when the slaves will not be doing anything?

I'd probably say a Paladin.
But any tanking class would work fairly well.
As would any AoE class that is capable of surviving and killing large pulls.
Any level 85 is going to boost through the Classic + Burning Crusade instances with ease.
Most likely any WotLK instances too.
Shammies make excellent outdoor boosters.
You need two toons to be boosted, because they have to be grouped.
Level 60's, can hit level 70 in a rather boring afternoon in Borean Tundra.
A mage or instant-cast AoE class as one of the lowbies is ideal.
Equip them with AH greens, only caring about Stamina nothing else.
Run around with the Shammies on auto follow.
Speccing one Resto for Earth Shield on the puller (lowbie) helps.
Have the lowbie tag a lot of mobs.
Then have all shammies (3 in my case, because I had 5 accounts) drop 3x Magma Totem.
Also drop 1x Stoneclaw for the Taunt + Stun.
As soon as Stoneclaw dies, have Shaman #2 drop theirs, ditto for Shammy #3 once #2 dies.
Totems are considered pets.
So pets don't reduce the experience a group takes, irregardless of the damage they deal provided the group has the mob tagged.
So you tag with lowbies, who are a group and not solo.
Which lets pets/totems do any amount of damage (97% maybe) and the lowbies get 100% of the experience.
(If a level 85 toon did the damage, again let's say 97% then the lowbies would split 3% of the mobs experience total).

I figured it would be the paladin. I read somewhere that 85 demonology warlocks are good, too. I read about someone using hellfire to round up mobs then having the felguard do that whirlwind attack once you have a huge crowd of mobs.
Has anyone used a lock to solo 60-80 instances?

Elemental shaman for sure until mid 70s. For the simple fact that he can self heal, knock mobs back and has great aoe for that level. And most important ghost wolf indoors.
A frost mage comes close, though the lack of healing might be sometimes an issue.
Boomkin / demonolgy have great aoe as well.
Prot paladin sucks balls, as the main aoe ability consecrate is on a long CD and very mana intensive. They can solo stuff though, but with incoming holy power wog nerf it's gonna be worse.
Blood dk works very very well for melee. Easy to solo every wotlk dungeon and pull complete packs.
Rogue works surprisingly well as a booster.
Prot warrior will do as well.
Priest & hunter are probably in the worst state here.
back in wotlk I made a little video after the 4.0 release of a boost run on ele shaman in sfk, which can be found here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yp5OMPHFOws&feature=channel_video_title)

+1 movement speed matters so much. Feral can work aswell. for the same reason

It takes me almost fifteen minutes to clear hellfire ramparts with an 85 prot pally if i kill the last two bosses. Seems the mobs reset if i kite them too far - which is odd since i thought that was impossible in instances. Anyway, its slow because pally aoes have a relatively long cooldown. I tried using a level 80 warlock gathering stuff up with hellfire but i almost died several times. The lock only has 35k health; the pally has 110k plus plate armor.
I may try using an 85 mage or an 85 lock. Im worried about using the mage because of the post 4.0 aoe merfs. I tried the 80 lock because it was on the same acct as the 85 pally.
It takes 3-4 runs of hfr to get from 60-61 with rest bonus. The boosting wiki on this site says to go to sethekk halls at level 63. This is new territory for me. Is that really the best place to go with those mind control and fear mobs?

If you run them through Sethekk Halls, I suggest using an 85 prot pally or death knight. if you're geared for it. Keep Resistance Aura up and have a high health pool on'em. Try to watch which mobs in there stun/silence lock you, and toss down your Consecrations/DnD for those mobs only. The resistance aura + high armor rating should help you against stun locks. As soon as you come out of it, pop them fast. Usually only about 2-3 in the mobs that can stun you I think. Been a while since I ran it. If you start to pull too many mobs at once that get you killed, just cut down on the amount you pull and it shouldn't be a problem. It might slow you down a bit, but this way will also limit the down time between the 5th instance/hr cap you reach before it resets. Unless you take that down time to do other things. Death Knights might be better for this place as the plagues you spread will burn down mobs faster if your unable to cast anything if stunned/silenced.

I may try hellfire heroics as soon as my first set of slaves can get the key. I will keep using the prot pally.
If i go to sethekk i will make sure i have the pvp trinket equipped.

Ramparts is very easily doable with a class in dps spec/gear. Be it mage, warlock or Boomkin like i did. You can do Underbog aswell. Once you leave outland for Northrend you might need a tankchar.
I definitely suggest trying with the warlock or mage. Just start with smaller packs. like 15 mobs at once and AoE them to death to get a feel for it.
Sethekk halls: just don't put your slaves close to your booster to avoid getting screwed over by the MC totem. Don't see a reason to worry that much about the stuns though. the big Talon dudes do a 5 sec stun, so you want to focus those.

I got my time down to 9 minutes from beginning to end to restarting and ready to go. This was using a paladin. My problem was I moved the slaves around too much. I also started aggroing one pack with autoattack, dragging them to another pack and using holy wrath, then on to the next to use consecration in range of a fourth pack i could use that shield throw on. By the time these four packs were down my aoes were off cooldown and i could start the cycle again.
After reading a hundred posts about powerleveling on here with bits of useful info scattered amongst them, I learned the slaves only needed to move across the little bridge near the entrance of the instance. I also stopped killing the last two bosses since there is too much walking (with no killing) involved in getting to them.
