View Full Version : Account Shenanigans

I recognize this is beating a dead horse, and people here might not have answers for me, but I'm asking this in several places. I'm working on consolidating my accounts to avoid any unpleasant account suspensions on down the road. To date, I've got 3 accounts under my name, and two that aren't. Rather than get a kick in the teeth from Blizzard at 70, I plan to solve the problem before it becomes a problem now, while my characters are young. I'm looking at buying two more battlechests. However, one of the characters is on my brother's account. (Paid for by me, levelled by me, he's never logged into it, was a birthday present he didn't care to use) I've been looking on the character move process info, and here's what I found:
Who is eligible for account-to-account transfers?
Transfers between accounts are only allowed between accounts where you are the subscriber. We do not support the transfer of characters between friends, guild mates, or family members. To conduct an account-to-account transfer, you will have to answer the 'secret question' for the destination account, and the last name on both accounts must match. His last name is the same as mine, I know the answer to the secret question, I receive the emails for the account, etc, etc. The only thing not me on the account is the first name. I recognize nobody here can speak for Blizzard, but anyone have any ideas if I can pull off a character move and by doing so only have one character to level up to match the rest of my team instead of two?

I can tell you for a fact that you can transfer that character. I recently transfered a 54 priest to my brothers account because I have a 60 preist and he has none... didn't have a problem.
Why not just use your brothers name?
I fucked up big time when i did mine and hope i just dont get busted. A good friend of mine online didnt want his wow account anymore so he gave it to me, i didnt want 2 accounts a few years ago so i sold mine :S and continued to use hes. So when it came time to start boxing I made 4 accounts in hes name. So according to blizzard I have a different identity. The only problem really is the account my misses uses is in the name of my older brother. I regret not just buying 5 new accounts and disabling my main account for the time being.

Well, I'm not so much concerned about blizzard changing passwords or anything like that. I receive the emails so I'd be able to just log in and change it back, whatever. I'm worried about if they were to get really finicky (High exposure is a byproduct of multiboxing, so my accounts will get looked at a lot I'm sure) and doing a permaban for account sharing. Since I know I have no choice to roll one because the account is a friends (he hasn't played in years but Blizzard won't care about that) I figured I'd do two to avoid that.
If you guys think I'm clean with my brothers account, I'm comfortable with that. I'm asking here cause I know this community is very cautious about account issues, so I trust your opinions. If the majority here think it's safe I'll go with that. I believe now is the time to make sure everything's legit, cause I know I plan to do this on a permanent basis. It's lots of fun!
I xfered by Warrior from my wife's account to a new one for the same reason. As stated by Blizz it's technically disallowed but the transfer thing let me get away with it and now I'm 100% undeniably legit. Annoying but small price compared to losing what is already some 8 days (almost 200 hours) worth of leveling on that toon. If I'd known about this stupid rule I would have never put it in her name to begin with. Grrrr...

I have one account that I inherited from a friend, I didn't pay him for the account (we did an even swap, my CoV for his WoW) and now I am wishing I hadn't.
I don't think I have been reported once even though I have had several people state the tired "/reported" to me. I am now a tad worried due to the fact that I have a level 62 Warlock on that account. Granted it wouldn't kill me if it was closed but I just don't know if it's worth the risk of having all my accounts closed.
I say transfer the character on your brothers account over and start leveling a fresh toon for the one you can't transfer. But that is just my advice.. not necessarily what I am doing.

My t5 paladin is on an account that's not under my name. I got it as a level 70 paladin with mixed greens and blues from a guild member who stopped playing and handed it over permanently. Now it's all epic, with some Black Temple gear. I don't plan to be upset if it goes byebye, cause I don't even have the guy's contact info anymore so it would just take a pw change to perma-deny me access. That's part of the reason I decided to start multiboxing with new accounts. They're mostly under my name (hopefully all under my name by the end of the week) and I can be as blatant as I want while only fearing a decision by Blizz to stop supporting multiboxing.

Even though there is no official stance on this I recently spoke to a customer service person (EU) that explained had my 6th account been in my surname (my wifes maiden name is what it is currently on) I could have changed it as we have the same address / post code and I even paid for it. However because it was a different surname even though i had paid for it for well over 1 year they wouldn't let me.
My opinion would be to sort it all now. Get 5 accounts that are yours from the get go, your name, your details, your email and secret question, all yours. That way, 2 years down the line when you have 12 lvl 100's and 14 DK's they can't turn around and ban you for a slight oversight that you made now.
Eliminate all possibilities now and save yourself some hassle that may come in the future. You will have piece of mind and a clear consience, all it takes is some nub to open a ticket saying "I think he is account sharing" to alert the GM's suspicion and to start looking at things he may have overseen had it been a simple "hes multi boxing". its just something to think about before your heart is broken. :)
I had my account temporarily suspended when it got hacked but I didn't know it had been hacked as I was away on holiday when it happened and came back to you the message "You account has been banned" when you try to login in and I tell you my heart dropped a thousand feet, to me then it was like having my baby ran over and then reveresed on! It turned out a mate who knew I was away had alerted GM's who had closed the account to be on the safe side. But for those few hours before I found out the story I was mortified and close to crying.
So, after my wall of text crit you, the basis is, start fresh on YOUR accounts where no other judgement could be made and you will box in peace!

This actually brings up an interesting question. If you get married and your surname changes then Blizzard must have a way for you to change your surname on the account. They will probably require lots and lots of proof but there must have been a way to get the surname changed.

Regards,Good point. Do you think it'd be risky if I were to transfer that character from the account under my brother's name? My concern is: After I successfully move the character to the account under my name, am I in the clear? Or would Blizzard come after me because the first names don't match after the fact?
Keep in mind, there will be no former owner coming forth to try to contest the character move. My only vulnerability is reports for "Lol botting"

Even the 'lol botting' reports are reports. When Blizzard takes note of this you probably will get banned.

I don't mean to pick a fight, but your input doesn't seem to be intended to assist, but to belittle. I'm sitting here with two new battlechests, and thinking over whether to roll two brand new characters, or one new one and transfer one from another account. Any advice?

Update: I did a little searching and found this:
About paid char transfers ('http://www.dual-boxing.com/forums/index.php?page=Thread&postID=33686')
While it's not a "No, here's why" it contains a lot of info. Based on that, I'm going to just level two more shamans. Woohoo for 29 levels I've already done, hope it goes faster.

I don't think Wilbur was being belittling. But if you were to check some of the customer service forums (awfully fun blizzard forum, might I add) you'd notice some people complaining about accounts being banned due to "association" with a botted account.
Are you assuming that, should you xfer your character from your brother's account to your personal account, that there would be no record of the transfer after it is complete? A GM could easily look at the transfer history and see that Jimbob Smith's character got transfered to Joebob Smith's account. And then all of your accounts could be in jeopardy due to association.
Not trying to be scary, just being honest. I personally haven't seen it happen before, but that doesn't mean it can't happen.
If you want to be 100% safe, level your characters on your own accounts and ONLY on your own accounts. There is no other way to guarantee that you won't get banned.

OK guys in a nut shell.
If the accounts you are using are not in your name then you are not the registered owner thus not being your account.
This includes if you bought the game and registered them in a different name, if the account is hacked you are royally screwed.
Blizzard response on the Paid Character Transfer
Only possible to PCT between 2 accounts if you are the registered account owner, NOT the person who pays for the account. Any attempts to transfer between them when the owner details do not match will break the ToU.
Yes, there is a loop hole where only the surname needs to match, but if there is a case where your account has been hacked or if they notice they can undo the PCT (character restored to previous stated before the PCT = lose gold, items and levels) and more then likely you will have a warning on your account or the account be closed.
A name change can only happen if you have got married or legal name change and you need bucket loads of proof and ID.
Anything else you want me to answer....

has anyone ever attempted to contact blizzard about this themselves and for example offer to pay the full sum of a new game to have the registered name changed?
if not, does contacting a GM yourself about this will cause the ban (by 'reporting' it yourself), so should it be anonymously, or doesnt it matter?
I don't really care about the money involved, but my current char on a friends account is 70 with decent gear now, and it'd be a damn pain in the ass to loose it like this

Blizzard wont change the name.
Buy a new account and box with that. If money is no object just buy another account and keep your friends account, just don't box with it. Really it is that simple.

Money can't buy you a name change for this account, they will only change the name registered on the account by a legal name change, normally deed poll or divorce.
You can call billing and accounts at Blizz if you wont believe me or email them.

Account substantiation seems to be a recurring theme these days, probably mostly my fault. Do what I did, save yourself some hasslehoff and head to Walmart for some battlechests. Blizzard will get you if every scrap of your account information isn't you.

Lol shoot me please.
I'll be banned soon after reading this stuff here....
Before I started with this group, I made some trial accounts to test if my pc would run 5 WoW's. It did but didn't start playing ... Then I ran into another boxer while just playing, looked awesome ofcourse so I went for a 5 man group ... But, had to use 3 trails as I already had 2, and the trails were to see if I would really like it....
I could not create the 3 trials with my own name so changed my first name .... still no good so got another email adres, and then it worked! But atm I'm as pissed now as I was happy back then -.-
2 email adresses and 2 different first names equals ban, I'm sure :pinch:
I've just sent an email to blizz, cba to start over so I rather loose my 3 new accounts now then at 70 or so
Thnx for brinning this up, I'll post what they send as an answer.

Like it says somewhere on the wow faq pages it is possible to change personal details in certain cases (name of account owner), for free ofc. but you probably will prefer to just kill yourself if you have to talk to a EU GM since all they can do is ctrl+v til the sun don't shine and being so stupid it's rude, i've tried rephrasing a couple emails where i tried to explain that it's really my account not my brothers, when i asked if they would understand if i used an online hebrew translator and using "#¤/& symbols they warned me it's against the rules to do so.

From what I've experienced, probably not possible. Maybe Attumen, but definitely not Moroes... And certain trash.
Anything requiring 2 tanks is going to be painful with 1 person.

I'm in the clear again  After talking to them on the phone, I sent them the install code's of the WoW's that I bought, together with a picture of my drivers license and a pic of a random bill I recently recieved.
They changed the name on my account with 2 falls names. I can keep using the 2 account I still have with a fake first name, will never be a problem 8)
So, just try and tell you filled in a fake name, and feel very sorry fot it .. They might just fix it
