I want to 3 box, (its all I can afford) and was wondering if it would be possible to still do instances before the mobs gray out. Obviously I need a dedicated healer and tank, as well as dps. I'm thinking of doing a pally, priest and lock. If I take my time and make sure I always have fm and health before each pull I think its doable. I'll be going horde and probably do all blood elves. for the classes I'm looking at I don't really see any difference as far as racials goes for those classes. I'm fairly certain I won't be able to do instances all the way to 70, but I just thought I'd throw it out there and see if anyone has any thoughts on whether or not it was doable.

My thoughts on the group roles:

Pally can buff, help heal in a pinch, ae taunt etc.

Lock can offtank, wipe prevention, dot like mad and ae if necessary

Priest can buff and heal

I wonder if a mage would be better, but I think a lock is easier to control (I have a 70 lock so really familiar with the class)

In general I think it will be hard for 3 chars to run an instance even with 3 players controlling them, unless they are really decked out. Multiboxing won't make it any easier.

Basically Chorizotarian hit the nail on the head.

You basically have to have the good gear before you can do the instances and you can't get the good gear with only 3 toons. If you have the funds, you might be able to get away with it by burning consumables to enhance your toons, but I'm talking a mana pot on most of the trash pulls. Even then your healer is probably gonna go OOM before your lock kills everything.

Multiboxing won't make it any easier.I have tried 3 equal level characters of multiple sets (ie Tank/Heal/DPS as well as Dps/Dps/Dps 3 Hunters) and so far even on the trash like mentioned above you are going to have to blow consumables due to adds. The hunters are able to dps down equal level elites without a problem, but if you add in just one more things start scaling up to a point that it is impossible. Once a paladin gets his full Prot/AOE abilities you might be able to pull it off with a Pally/heal and dps. It would take a long time, but if you kept a HOT on the pally and dotted the heck out of mobs it might work. The problem is that it would be slow and you really wouldn't want to use anything other than low aggro dots.

Yeah if you had 4 toons I would say tough but do able. But with just 3 .. I dont think you could pull it off. But hey give it a try and prove us all wrong.

A party of 5 players can wipe, same level. Whether they're trying and capable or not. It seems pretty canon, that certain classes can solo instances maybe 10 levels below them. But I never heard any story of 3 same level toons doing one instance, and succeeding. Good luck, though.

For three boxing the most common and easiest route is to roll 3 DPS then just LF2M for tank and heals. You can play the holy trinity but you'll need regular friends/guildies to roll with you because if you're going to play 3 roles then you'll have to control the encounters carefully and will have trouble responding to joe-pugger being an idiot and pulling stuff, breaking sheep, etc. I boxed tank and heals from 20-60 and although quite proficient would still get stomped on because of this stuff. Then they'll add insult to injury by saying it's your fault you couldn't compensate for their stupidity and then leave the group. It's incredibly annoying.

I think once you get half or more of your kara or BoJ epics you could 3 man regular level 70 instances... but at that point will gain nothing from it.

Oh man, I'd totally go with a Tank+Healer+DPS combo for PvE if you are trying to get others LFG to join you for instances. Tanks and healers are the hardest to pick up, in my experience, and grabbing an extra DPS or two is generally MUCH faster.

I know they're hardest to find, that's why I abandoned by Warlock at 60 and dualed a priest and warrior. Just saying I had a lot of issue with finding DPS that would behave appropriately. Also, if you come to the table with 3 perfectly synchronized DPS you'll build a friends list of tanks and healers that will run with you any time you want. Tanks and healers get gun shy of the LFG channel because the quality of DPS is so hit or miss.

This is all before the patch that changed instance levels around.

I was able to 3-box with paladin tank, druid healer, warlock dps up to ZF, which was cake once I got dispelling poly with the felhunter down. I don't remember what the lowest level I did it was but it had to be low 40s for an almost full clear(no mallet). BRD at 51-53 didn't work too well. Could easilly clear the first room and the jail area, but anything after that was trouble. ST at those levels went...OK I guess. I didn't do a full run half because I hate the place and half because my equipment was breaking at the end. Not sure if I could have handled both the dragons at those levels. I hate mara. At around 50 I went with one more, he had to leave, got completely lost later and gave up. Not sure if I could have cleared everything, but I wasn't doing too bad in the first half.

I doubt you'd get very far in TBC instances with 3 at the instance's level.

I haven't got 3 characters high enough to try this yet, decided to try it out alliance side on stormrage since i can fund better since i have 2 70's there. so far i have a 20 priest and my pally is 10, when all 3 get to 20 gonna give deadmines a try. I'm hoping that with a boost from gear/enchants i'll be able to at least do instances before they gray out on me. Thanks for all the responses and encouragement/constructive ideas.
