View Full Version : Tag Boosting in Rift

Tag Boosting is when a low level tags a mob, and someone else kills it, the low level gets full exp. Rift uses the "whoever tags first gets the exp rule" or so it seems. Now in rift or invasions this does not apply to exp. just loot. SO if rifts or invasions, anyone who contributes to killing the invaders get exp, the person/group/raid that tagged it gets loot rights.

I tested this with a 33 bard and my banker alt, a lvl 7 warrior. The mob was red to him ( level 15 mob ) and grey to my 33 bard. the lvl 7 did a few points of DPS to tag it, my bard killed it and the noob got full exp. What does this mean? unlike in WoW, the level of the mob has no importance to the booster ( the high level toon(s), so as long as the noob can do some dps and not die, he will get full exp when the boosters kill the mob(s).

What i have not tested is the old school method of putting some HoTs on the noob so they do not die trying to tag higher level mobs. In some games if a low level gets heals/HoTs it reduces the exp or eliminates it because of the higher level being too high to get exp for the mob. Does this make sense? Anyway, can someone with a healer test this? I do not have a direct heal class high enough to test it.

What this means is it should be very easy to power level alts using tag boosting. Another thing I need to try and instance boosting. If the high level toons get no exp, will the low level get any?

I can try and test this tonight using my cleric ( 22 ) and my new warrior ( 11 ).

I was wondering about the instance boosting last night, so I grouped in my level 7 Warrior and tried to teleport him to RotF, however, there is a min level to enter and I couldn't test it out.

Does anyone know the min level to enter? I know the level range for the instance is 15-19, maybe 13?

Riftjunkies has a good map that has all the instances and zones on it with level ranges.

RotF min lvl is 15

Tag boosting is kinda nice, and HoT's do work. Also seems the grouped xp with a higher level is roughly halved?

I tested trying to boost a bunch of different ways. Result: frustration - they've worked pretty hard to make it not possible to power level effectively as far as I can find. Instances yeah you can mow down stuff with a higher level but the xp the lowbies get is capped out so even higher level elite give very little more than normal mobs. Tried the old WoW trick of killing stuff of the booster's level but that was still the same xp cap to the lowbies.

Rifts, same deal, not terrible but not great. Guess if you wanted to farm the factions and planarite, but it upsets the normal lowbies around. Best result I had was running quests with a high level helping finish mobs and heal once tagged - not all that much faster than doing it normal. Unfortunate that they've made it so the best xp by far is just to run the quests. I don't mind them once through but after that, meh. I've been frustrated with trying to skip collection quests and then not having ongoing quest chains as well. Has anyone had better results with trying to level without questing or only some quests?

The only way I have found to NOT have to do collection quests ( the loot the shiny item type ) is to do WFs, Rifts as well as quest. i always have quests turn green on me before I'm done with a zone. If all you do is quest, then you HAVE to do the collection quests.

Basically I quest until i hit a wall where there are nothing but collection quests left. i then will Que up for Wfs and RIft hunt while I wait for queues. Eventually more quests will open up in new areas.

I have been doing the bare minimum to get me to the first boss in the zone's instance, then I twist on that until I can kill the 2nd boss, rinse repeat until I level out of the instance. The instances are great xp -- I've been getting at least a level every time I go in, even if I stop at boss 1. I stop when running the instance only gets me half a level or so.

Then again, I'm not particularly flying along...

Once i get to play again ( seems like forever since i last played) I will have all trade skills maxed, ill farm mats and make my next teams gear for grinding instances. I know the zones well enough to be able to grind packs of mobs for in between levels.

Or ill just lvl a solo warrior to tank for my rogues 8)

On my new team, I barely did any quests all the way to 50. I started with dungeons which worked well for awhile but there was always a few levels where the dungeon gave little xp and the next one was hard enough to be pretty slow if even doable. What I finally found seemed better xp was just to run around doing rifts and invasions, and mowing through mobs in between. If you get the tag for the mobs rifts are excellent xp. It was definitely faster leveling than dungeons from about 35 on. Buying the lvl 40 mounts was worth the investment for this too.

Back to the boosting topic too, I imagine if you box a high level and let the low ones tag the appropriate level rift mobs then help kill, it would be about as fast xp as you can get.

The idea i had was to have the noob use an AE effect on mobs to tag them all and have a cleric put hots and heals on him ( if that even works ) while the rest of the team kill them all. So the noob would, in effect, be getting the exp that would normally take a full group of people to do. Just tagging one mob at a time would be ok.. but finding great AE grinding spots might be better or rifts.

Also just quest boosting might be an option. Just follow the nub around, help him kill quest mobs for faster questing.
