IMPORTANT - For those using ISBoxer/Innerspace Lax has changed the way it works based on the below findings. You no longer need to change the cfg file to get this massive boost. If you do not use ISBoxer, you can make the simple change below and still get the benefit.

Before playing today I changed the core assignments in the rift.cfg file for each character and got a major boost. I did not change anything in ISBoxer. All I did was change the rift cfg for each character to use different cores and all of a sudden I am hitting the max 30+ fps (I have it set to max at 30 on the main screen) with graphics turned up. Feels and moves like WoW now.

If you are having low frame rates try changing the config file in rift. It seemed to make a huge difference for me.

DETAILS

There are cfg files for each of your characters located here C:\Users\MY USER\AppData\Roaming\RIFT . Below is a part of that file with the section that you need to change. I highlighted the specific line that needs changing below in red. The default setting is core 3 for this option. I changed one character to 1, another to 5 and another to 7. I left the other two set to the default of 3.

The name of these files are "rift-charactername.cfg" Mine was located in the public appdata file where the Rift folder is located.

The change is dramatic. Totally different game now. I can maintain 30fps in busy areas. I have it set to max at 30. Might change that now and see if it gets in the 40s+ on the main screen with 5 running.

LogCombatConsole = False
LostFocusMinFrameTime = 100
MainThreadCPU = 1 (this orignally had 3, all of them have a default setting of 3).
UseQueryPerformanceCounter = True

What, 2 cores per instance?

I only see one config file in the main rift install folder. Where are the character specific files?

Edit: nevermind, found it.

EDIT#2: HOLY CRAP This should be stickied, I am running 3 right now and making this change just boosted me from 15fps standing around doing nothing to 45. YIKES.

I'll see what I can do about this for ISBoxer

I can't find the character specific files even when I do a search. Where in the world are they located?

I was able to get into the AppData folder and then the Roaming folder and *then* into RIFT, but there are no character CFG's.

That's great. I'm glad I wasn't the only one who saw an extreme jump in performance with this minor change.

Pretty sure this will work for anyone right? ISBoxer doesn't matter since this is a a RIFT file. Hope others get a similar result.

That's awesome. So glad this is helping people. Changes the game completely to be able to freely box and not worry about lag and characters falling off follow, etc.

I had to patch Innerspace to 1.11 which has more Rift support. Then I ran the virtual file wizard and told it to do it for Rift. It then knew to get the rift.cfg and virtualize it for each character in my character set.

Then when I started the game and logged in, when looking in the appdata folder i saw 4 files, theyll be like [character_name]-rift.cfg

You can then go in and change it for each.

Quick way to make sure you're in the right folder is to right click on rift.cfg in your rift directory and choose "Open file location".. because its a shortcut to the rift.cfg in the appdata folder.

Thanks again for pointing this out, I went from 2 clients to 4 yesterday.

ISBoxer users: Inner Space build 5395 is up now, and should take care of this particular performance issue without having to edit your RIFT config. The CPU core assignments in ISBoxer (in Slots in your Character Set) now override this setting in RIFT.

Just re-launch Inner Space, let it patch up to 5395 or later, and you should be good.

I think some people who havent seen this information yet are about to post about their phenomenal FPS in RIFT after today's Inner Space update :P

Lax,

For WoW I always just selected all 8 and let the computer figure it out.

Do you think we should do the same here? Or should we set it to 1 each like we did in the rift.cfg file?

Thanks.

ISBoxer now automatically selects all cores for RIFT when you make your team with the Quick Setup Wizard (as of any new download of ISBoxer, just did a ninja update).

If you play WoW, then the same as what you do for WoW is probably fine. If your 8 cores are from an i7, see http://isboxer.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=30&t=1090 for recommended settings

You guys show why this is one of the best communities I've ever been on. Smart, helpful people who find solutions, share them with the community and developers that make updates almost automatically.

Lyon: This may be your ticket to playing 5 at once (along with overclocking your CPU)!

This is an amazing performance increase!

We should probably get something nicely written up and stickied so people dont miss it after those of us playing stop talking about this particular subjct, that is how ridiculous this simple change is.

I M O.

I have a team of 5 bards at 28, this tips did increase my FPS a ton! I would like to get to the point where my lead toon can crank up the eye candy more and more. I'm sure that will take new hardware though. But for leveling, i run 4 on the lowest possible settings, all 5 in low render mode, and the lead toon has a few things turned up. ( like view distance and some minor detail stuff ) My main screen gets 30fps in cities and a steady 35 everywhere else. I'm happy for now!

Hmm. Prior to this release, I had all my maincputhreads set to 0 and was getting 45-50fps and 25-30fps on the slaves. Post IS patch, I'm now seeing 21fps on the main and teens on the slaves.

I'm kinda concerned...

i7 950 OC'd to 4GHz, 24 GB ram, 2x MIS GTX 560 Ti's OC'd to 950/1900/2100.

Update: I'm not sure what was going on last night -- I was in IT seeing those frame rates, yet today I was Rift surfing seeing 45-60fps... Strange.
