View Full Version : [Eve] Effective use of the new keyboard short cuts

I've been away from EVE for a few month, and haven't gotten back up to speed on the key board short cuts that were added a few patches ago. One of my main complaints about EVE and multi boxing was EVE clients were so hard to control as everything was mouse centric. I usually just gave up trying to do anything slick, and just use ISBoxer for the fast switching and being able to keep eye on my other clients. I know people have had success with mouse broadcasting to have a fleet all lock the same targets, but I've not even bothered to go that far.

Has any one made good use of the new key bindings? It looks like there some nice ones to lock targets, and to charge focus among locked targets. Between those and the new combat kb commands to orbit/approach/keep at range, it looks like it wouldn't be to bad to box a few guys in combat without the constant switching between clients.

I'm a miner, but I was still displeased by the extreme lack of keyboard commands. I can't even command my mining drones unless I use my mouse, whereas with fighter drones all you do his hit "F" to make them attack.

It's kinda retarded that you have to hold CTRL to target...why not just let me specify a key that I can hit?

I can't say I spent much time last week setting them up but the ones I did go through seemed just about as useless as they've ever been. No "target nearest enemy," no "lock target," no "target next enemy." Funny as hell reading the threads I found when searching for info on the changes, most of which revolved around "welcome to 21st-century interfaces, CCP" and "EVE is meant to be hard, yo."

[edit] Correction: there is a "toggle lock target" keybind, which halves the number of clicks required to lock targets.

"target nearest enemy" can be done by setting the overview to sort by distance, filtering out everything but enemies, and some clever mouse broadcasting. I'm not saying its great, but at least it's doable.

My plan going in was to to target 1 round of enemies (in say a WH PVE encounter) using the distance sort, then use the "selected next" key binds to toggle between those 5-6 that I just locked. Hopefully it can be done in a way that lets me maintain the same targets between all my clients.

Yeah, I was playing with the list sorting last night. Not perfect but better than defaults. Still, having to click the damn list is annoying as hell. With 6+ target lock options, though, click targeting may just be less annoying than it would be otherwise. I do use mouse broadcasting for targeting at times, though considering I pretty much one-shot 90% of the things I target in level 1s/2s so far, I tend to want to target different ships with each guy.

Takes some out-of-the-box thinking to get efficient at it, that's for sure.

That will change if you ever run level 4's or go against sleepers. We've had a sleeper BS take 2-3 minutes to kill with 6 of our battleships wailing on it.

Understood. Considering my progress thus far, it'll be quite a while before I'm up to level 4s. I'm not in a hurry, though. ;)

For lvl one and 2 missions i found it not that much of a speed up to have more than 2 ships stuff dies so fast. onces you get up to 3 and 4 lvl missions stuff takes longer and there lot more ships..I'm running CNR (caldiar navy raven) with a gank set up sentry drone dominix. most the time i have my dominix take out the battle ships and CNR take out BC then help with battle ships. work on training up one my hulk polite to dominix for more gank. hope to make the lvl 4 go even faster. have not done any thing with IS boxer yet but plan to onces my 2nd dominix is ready to join me. some of the new things that IS boxer coming with. like seeing the other screen with your mouse looks nice to help lock targets. will have to see when it comes out.

I used to run a torp Golem and a sentry domi myself.

That is a fantastic idea for EVE! I did think of having all of my ships' shields/armor/hull read outs visible as well.

Seeing as it's 'try out missioning -ageddon' week I've been attempting to get keyboard broadcasting working in Innerspace. Just being able to press CTRL+U to undock everyone so that my squad leader can warp them all to the gate would be a big help.

The ISBoxer boards aren't of much use, has anyone got this working succesfullly?

If all you want is to broadcast CTRL+U when you press CTRL+U, follow this (from the Quick Start):
