I really don't know much about hunters but I've always wanted to. I know you can probably do any four pets and win at questing, but I thought good synergy might come from one tank pet, one utilitypet (cunning?) and a couple of dps tree pets.
I know wolf has an important buff but what other pet buffs might I want to consider?
Has anyone written any interesting posts on pvping with four hunters?

well if I had 4 hunters I could 1 shot anyone wearing under 4k resil.
With the current changes to MM on the PTR my aim shots are hitting for 25k+ on plate high resil targets(3k+) and chim are hitting for 18-22k, arcane shot are hitting 11k and kill shot does 7-8k non crit all on plate high resil 3k+.
So if you had 4, I could see it.

So you one shot that one person. What do you do when everyone moves into melee range?

Yah boxing hunters is a gimmick
I just felt like sharing my enthusiasm about the ptr currently. I know I wont have any issue kiting any melee any longer with 35 sec MC as a solo hunter. Raping mages will be so much fun again,.

I have 3 pet groups. One is PVP/attack. It is a
1) devilsaur (http://www.wowhead.com/spell=90309 - increases crit chance 5% 5 pets and 5 hunters all critting more, oh my damn) (http://www.wowhead.com/spell=54680 free healing debuff, since I want a ferocity pet and get a PVP ability for free, /cheer).
2) Raptor (http://www.wowhead.com/spell=50498 - lower armor, 5 hunters do a lot of physical attack and so do 5 pets, all get benefits).
3) Carrion (http://www.wowhead.com/spell=24423 - lowers damage done to you, it is nice to have an AOE tag ability to tag mobs or get HKs in PVP).
4) Cat (http://www.wowhead.com/spell=93435 - agi/str, all hunters and pets getting more AP isn't anything to sneeze at).
5) Silithid (http://www.wowhead.com/spell=90364 - stam/fortitude helps hunters (pets get stats from hunters) and http://www.wowhead.com/spell=54706 - web for 5 secs, yeah, a cunning pet, but getting 2 pretty big buffs is too much to pass up).
I go for ferocity pets for DPS (soloing) and PVP. They have sprint, they have healing from http://www.wowhead.com/spell=53187 and http://www.wowhead.com/spell=53426 . Both really nice.
For instances and soloing elites in the wild, I use 2 bears (demo shout is AOE aggro, I miss swipe, /cry), a worm (just cause I saved him from hope he would get his AOE back--it is aggroless now) and a ferocity bear (Arcturis--- just cause I want to show off I got him, have a bear in reserve) and a carrion bird to help lower damage done to pets). I use fort scrolls from my inscription for stam boost. It seems to work for me. They have CRAZY healing due to spamming mend pet (takes 0000 focus) and great healing due to tenacity talents.
I still have dreams that they would let pets tank to help with tank shortage (hunters and locks pets). My locks really can't tank worth crap, not enough aggro. But my hunters pets, all of them, I can unload, 100% and not pull aggro unless I try (multishot before they get there and do thunderclap). Pet classes are too much fun for me, they don't worry about facing, they attack mobs without having to tell them and do really well at aggro and healing.

I had five 70 bm hunters during wotlk. They were so op then you could just turn the pets loose on people and theyd usually panic, running around confused before dying three seconds later while you did /dance. Chain bestial wrath and intimidation... Fun times. Especially in av overlooking the bridge.
My hunters now are bm but theyre under lvl 70 and i just picked that spec because its what i used to have.
I dont know enough about the state of hunters today to offer any constructive advice. I just remember them being a lot of fun back then.
