With the letters representing classes, these seem to be the popular patterns of 5-box group mix:
AAAAA
ABBBB
ABCCC
ABCCD
Xzin was one of the first with ABBBB, PriestMageMageMageMage, great for PVP apparently.
ABCCC seems better suited to PVE and maybe not all that good for PVP due to too many classes. For example PallyPriestMageMageMage.
ABCCD is another for PVE mainly with PallyPriestMageMageWarlock.
AAAAA is the current rage with ShamanShamanShamanShamanShaman, with possibly DruidDruidDruidDruidDruid a possible up and comer.
Are any other AAAAA's viable?
Will the next FOTM be an AAAAA or some other pattern?

5 Rogue = 5x Shadow Step, 1 Cheapshop->Hemo->Hemo->Kidney + 4 Ambush->Backstab->Backstab?

IF rogue could be done, why not just do 5x shadowstep + ambush and move to the next one? :)

There are only three more combos possible, which would make these the unpopular patterns:
AABBB
ABBCC
ABCDE
I think ABBCC is not too different from ABBBB. Instead of healer/tank + 4 dps, you can get 2+2 dps, magi+warlocks for instance. Might be playable?
ABCDE? Very difficult to control. AABBB on the other hand, I've never seen a team like that.

I would think 5 hunters would make a pretty good team. They might not be able to do heroics, but i don't see why they couldn't do regular instances all the way to 70. If you have pets specced for different types of encounters (ie one with fire resist for the last boss in ramps) and use traps and focused fire wisely I don't see a downside at all to an all hunter group, with the exception of no wipe prevention. Most mobs will die incredibly fast, and with the abilty to fd out of a bad pull and disposable tanks, any pull is doable as long as you can knock off a mob or two every try, just fd, rezz the pets and start over.

Warlocks? Possible to do more than others due to pets, but again, too squish. fail.
Is that really the case though?
With warlocks you here have a good combination I think.....you can mix and match pets as needed, once you hit 70 with enough stam gear they can tank (though wether drainlife would be enough to heal against a lot of bosses is hard to say....mine currently drains ~407 per tick with only +650 spelldamage so against bosses hitting for 3-500 it would be possible to live) and then you have the dps of 5 x Seed, Doom, Immolate, CoA, Corruption, UA at a time + wands and drains.

Priests? No tank. Fail.
Shields + Shadowform + 5x Vampiric Embrace = Reduced need (any need?) for a tank. You could 5-box every normal instance, and 4-box with a tank in every Heroic. In PvP and Raids, it wouldn't matter of course.

I can't speak for the rest of our community, but I eagerly await the FOTX.
Death Knight Quintuplets? :D

AABBB on the other hand, I've never seen a team like that.
I have been thinking about an AABBB group...
2 Paladins and 3 Holy Priests
That would give everyone in the group Retribution Aura + Sanctity Aura and Blessing of Kings + Blessing of Wisdom
Might not be a very powerful group, but quite a fun PVE endurance group :)

Ok, so there are 7 possible patterns. Hey, I've given all but two of them names:
AAAAA -- ATeam group
ABBBB -- Harem group
ABCCC --
ABCDD --
ABBCC -- TwinTwin group
AABBB -- FullHouse group
ABCDE -- Nightmare group

FWIW, I named the other two patterns:
AAAAA -- ATeam group
ABBBB -- Harem group
ABCCC -- Dungeon group*
ABCDD -- Mixed group*
ABBCC -- TwinTwin group
AABBB -- FullHouse group
ABCDE -- Nightmare group

Blah, ABCDE's not that bad, well, for pve. There's a bit more mental overhead, and you'll have to be some thinking about keybinds, but I like it.

AAAAA - 5 of a Kind
ABBBB - 4 of a Kind, or 5 of a Kind with a Joker
AABBB - Full House
ABCCC - 3 of a Kind
ABBCC - 2 Pairs
ABCDD - A Pair
ABCDE - A Bust
So, AAAAA >= ABBBB > AABBB > ABCCC > ABBCC > ABCDD > ABCDE
