View Full Version : Question about random dungeons

Does anyone know what decides the dungeons you're eligible to pick up randomly?

I've discovered both Vortex Pinnacle and Stonecore, and both are listed as 82-84 instances. When I queue for a random with my group, I get Stonecore EVERY time. Realistically, it is not being random. I'm hoping to understand why it is this way, and if there's any way for me to sometimes get vortex pinnacle.

Thanks! zip

Did you clear Stonecore each time? I keep getting Lost City myself while I discovered all of the other dungeons as well. But I cannot clear the last boss there yet so I just clear up until the 3rd one.

Interesting...no; I've cleared all but the last boss in Stonecore. So if and when I can defeat the last boss, I may once again get vortex? Hmm...guess I can't put off practicing that fight...

Pretty sure the only thing it takes into account is if you have visited the dungeon entrance, then your iLev gear. I remember reading that it would favor dungeons you have not finished, but in LK, I found that to be bunk. I would get just random dungeons that I had all the achievements just as often as those as I did not.

Also random is not as random as you may think. If you are not using your own 5 man group. The extra 'random people' you get my have specifically chosen that dungeon for a drop or some other reason and therefore it is not random at all. Like always getting crusade tournament heroic because the tanks were going for tank trinkets etc.

When they say not finished they don't mean achievements, but rather still being saved to having killed some of the bosses.

It's funny how you find streaks like this. Way, way back in alpha testing I pushed, even pleaded, that Bliz take a good look at its random number generation but they never gave it much thought. Aparently, they were using some math guy's genius algorythm and were confident it had been properly implemented into the game.

In the seven years of play since, however, I've frequently thought back to it as insane streaks come up. I've had screen captures of seven /roll s of the same number, toons in my multibox team consistently losing to others but different with sessions, etc.

The only thing I can think of is maybe theres a higher ilvl requirement to do a random (heroic or not) than to just warp to the instance... so even though you can go to both, having discovered them, youre only good enough for one of them. Just spitballing.

I have discovered throne of the tides. I can go to it through Specific Dungeon, but if i queue for a random dungeon with my group it says "one or more of your party does not meet the requirement".. would be nice if they told me what req i wasnt meeting.

Blizzards RNG isn't as random as you'd think.

Back in TBC I must have done about 20 runs of VC trying to get Blackened Defias Armor for a hunter twink I was making.

The drops off Van Cleef were very ordered. I got 4-5 of one item, then 4-5 of another, 4-5 of yet another, and then finally I got what I wanted (and probably would have got it again a few times if I'd carried on). I was within the 5 or so runs per hour limit because of how long it was taking me to loot everything (wool selling rather well and it being worth it to pick it all up).

I've seen the same kind of pattern farming other instances, although I haven't done that many runs one after another since.

It seems Blizzard may well be using the time as part of the random seed.

If you try queueing for a specific dungeon you can see which dungeons you or one of your group members cannot enter yet. And when you hover over de lock icon in front of the instance you can see which requirement is missing.

That way you might be able to find what you're missing for the random requirement.

I guess thats what im saying. I CAN go to it using the Specific Dungeon selection. But if i try to go to random dungeon queue, it says i dont meet the req... maybe i have to have more than 1 dungeon unlocked to join the queue, not sure.

I was actually wondering the same thing myself. I have Blackrock Caverns and Throne of the Tides discovered and it still won't let me random queue. After discovering BRC, I dual boxed the dungeon without too many problems. I then tried to random queue and it wouldn't let me. Someone mentioned that maybe you needed to have at least 2 discovered dungeons to queue so I went and found ToT but it still wouldn't let me random queue. I am able to queue as a specific dungeon though. I thought maybe it was my alts but I couldn't do it as a solo player on my tank who has a combination of ICC25 gear and some of the new blue pieces.

If anyone knows what the requirements are (e.g. does it take 3 dungeon discoveries in order to random queue) please let us know. I am going to look for Stonecore once I am home from work and see if that does it.

I remember if was solo I seemed to get a fairly random dungeon set but when I grouped my team I got a much more limited set ... usually the dungeons I liked to avoid like Occulas... multiple times a day even. I hate the logic the random dungeon finder uses.

I was able to find this online even though I was at work. It may help those of us having trouble using the LFD tool to figure out why we can't use it.

The Dungeon Finder will try to queue you for ALL instances that you meet the level/gear requirements for, and if you can't enter one or more of them due to having not found the entrance it will fail. So go find the entrances to the rest of the instances you're eligible for.

So in my case I was likely eligible based on gear level for multiple dungeons but since I hadn't found them yet it was failing on the dungeon check. Once I go and find those dungeon entrances I am guessing I should be all set.

TLDR version: As long as you have discovered all of the dungeons that you meet the gear requirement for then you should be able to to use the LFD tool
