How are you guys going to manage your professions?
I know Ualla has 34 alchemists which he mentioned he will be leveling up, but what is the point when there aren't any CD abilities? One flask master, and one transmutation master and a potions master and thats enough?
I now have 10 characters to addd professions onto, and seeing as Alchemists have received a CD nerf (of not having any CD abilities) I don't see the point in having an alchemist?
What are your thoughts?

well, are you sure its not just that they are putting the CD back when cata hits? its been like that more or less for every expantion i think..

I put together two alchemy kits and stored them in a guild bank just in cast they do have a cooldown on transmutes. That way I'll either have 3 alchemist or can make a few thousand gold selling them. But nobody will know for sure until tuesday.

O right, so they still might add things?

All the high end mats are on a day cooldown, like trugold.

It looks like Truegold (Trugold?) is a daily cooldown.
And most high end recipes, of all professions, will use this material.
Initially, this will be the transmute for gold.
Shodakan suggested combining this with a Blacksmith to make your own equivalent Titansteel Weapons.
Down the road, when Jewelcrafting epic gems are introduced, they will likely have a cooldown to transmute.
Chances are, that will be a few months in.
Not sure which will be more profitable, but I'm sure we'll figure it out.
Initially, the new ores and herbs will sell for a massive amount.
A lot more demand, then supply.
Down the road, production skills (buying mats) will make more than gathering skills.
But you can make a ton on the initial demand for mats.
Definitely a consideration.

a tip on gathering : herbalism, mining.
DO NOT DO QUESTS. Stay in the lowest phase of an area.
when everyone else does quests, they are NOT in your phase of the area, more mines/herbs for you :)))

Are you sure that those nodes are only for your phase and that no other phase(s) can see them? Would be fun to see a
node disappear right in front of you [aka hacking teleporting miners from WotLK]. :)

Does it even matter? I decided to level up herbalism/inscription on one of my characters, and it seems as if Blizzard has drastically increased the old-world resource spawns in anticipation of Cataclysm. It was not unusual to spot two or three nodes within the mini-map range, and moving to gather one would often highlight one or two others. Zones like Feralas are a non-stop gathering bonanza. Getting to 300 in a tradeskill that depends on herbalism or mining should be easy. I didn't slow down until I got to Outland, and by then my herbalism skill was something like 360.
Outland resources (herbs, ore, skins) might be a huge money-maker in the next few weeks, as all of those goblins and worgen hit Outland and start fighting for the relatively scarce resources there.

I've spent 100k, mostly on mats for leveling trade skills.
A fair bit extra on the cloth, because of first aid.
Some bags too.
And have a plan to sell items in stages.
A list of which items to list during each of the first eight weeks of the expansion.
Outland mats list between weeks 4 and weeks 6, hopefully that will correlate to minimum supply and maximum demand.
I'm really curious, what that 100k in speculation will translate into by the end of the 8 week mark.

I'm a little annoyed that I didn't leave myself any liquid. I've ruined my plan of buying out the AH of Netherweave in order to control the bag market. There are 300 bags on there atm, which I can't afford to buy. Even though I know I have about 40-50k in gold, its all in materials ><
Silly me!

After i finish my homework i'm going to write up a guide for using professions to make money. I have two projects to do, so might be a while.

nope the nodes are uniq to phases.
you might encounter the situation, that you see a node , but when you come closer it disappears. My first thought was HACK, since I saw no one mining, but when I flew back the way I came it showed up again. Happened to 2-3 nodes and I also saw shortly some mobs from another phase, which disappeared the same time as the node.
levelled up mining and herbalism to 525 that way yesterday evening and got tons of mats :)

well I just spent all my gold (16k) on lvling up my ONE alchemist 2 days after release. Thought I would make some bank with transmute gems selling for 800G. Well I knew the price would come down to normal, but damn they are now 100g-200g per gem.
Seems like I wasted all my gold hehe, lesson learned though ;)
only thing I can see making gold on my server is selling ore at 400g-500g a stack and maybe selling herbs. That is why I am leveling my miner/herbalist DK and just doing cata content solo.
Perhaps I will try my hand at auctioneer again, I seem to make little profit but nothing to turn heads.

I have a few crafting professions on my toons: 1 alchemist, 2 Enchanter/DE'ers, LWx2, etc.
But to be honest, I haven't found much that I can't have made for me for 10-25g if I have the mats, so I prefer collecting skillz, which you can AH all the mats for gold...
Being a dual boxer, my preference is for a Ench/DE & Herb for one and Skinner/Miner for the other ...

Pretty much, everything is too expensive to level via buying mats.
You want to either farm the mats yourself, or wait until the prices of the mats drop.
If you race the professions up, at the inflated prices...
You might make pretty decent coin, at those inflated prices.
Not sure that it is worth it.
Have not done any professions so far, aside from raiding the cap to 525.

levelled 3x alch to 525: - it s been a nightmare! used 3 of my lvl 80 priests
the last steps to 525 need a lot of raw gems for trasmutations.
suggest, i ve done in this way, to level a Jc together with alchemy at 475.
at 475 i could prospect elementium (and obsidium).
total cost for all: about 25/30k :)
the final cd is trasmute truegold.
trying to selling my 3 truegold for 3.5k gold eo.
i ve finished to level a miner. useful for pyrite smelting.
note: pyrite bar and truegold shares CD.

Looked at the cost of Truegold, mats vs finished product.
It's 950g for the mats (if bought on the AH), and they're selling at 2000-2200g, so over a 1,000g profit per transmute or 5,000g per day with five toons.
Interestingly enough, Pyrite is much cheaper to buy the finished bar than to buy the mats and transmute it myself.
Spend 28,800g buying the mats necessary to take the first five toons from 450 to 525 alchemy.
At current prices, that's under a week to repay the investment, which is pretty crazy.
So, five alchemists leveled up, some mats left over.
I decided to hold off on leveling anything more than my tailoring and enchanting prior to Cata (and those just because when I would instance mats for those professions would rain from the sky) and I am *EXTREMELY* glad I did!
I spent a *total* of 1.5k gold and maybe 6-8 hours of farming on my druid while I skill up archaeology and that much gold & mats got me:
5 engineers to 300 (they aren't high enough level to go past)
1 Inscriptor to 425
1 Alchemist to 438
1 Blacksmith to 300 (not high enough level to go past)
1 Jewelcrafter to 425
5 4 alchemists to 300 (not high enough level to go past)

Do you get extra cloth drops or something if you are tailor?
