View Full Version : Violet Hold Boosting?

I noticed today that you can enter The Violet Hold at level 70. This would seem like a good place to help boost my level 71 shaman up to 75 - 76.
Has anyone else tried this?

Why do you think this would be a good place when compared to questing or other dungeons? Do you think the exp per hour is good in there? I haven't paid attention so I don't know.

I think it would be decent because of the constant flow of mobs. It's a pretty quick instance, too.

Here's my thinking:
My toons are still parked in Dalaran so it's simple and quick for them to walk into the instance when my 80 opens the door.
All the portals are in a small area so you could park them up on the stairs and clear the rest and still get experience. No running everyone around.
The instance runs are always fast and my tank druid is well geared so I should easily be able to make 4 runs an hour.

I'm not saying you're wrong, because I haven't seen any testing, but I'd guess at level 70+ it's better to have those toons being dragged along and helping with DPS. That likely means doing instances at level. When below level 60, your 80 can kill so quickly that it's fine if the slaves just stand there. I'm not sure that benefit carries all the way up to WotLK content.

Violet hold would be by far the worst instance IMO since its the only instance that requires you to wait some time between wrecking the next group of mobs instead of just moveing over and engaging them.

Wasnt the instance patched for the portals to chain open, or was that just heroic?
Frankly the numbers just need to be posted, how long does a X gearscore Y spec tankadin take to soloe VH normal, what is the XP earned? "Instance Timer"
I like DrakTharon Keep for grinding, the undead and leeroy-able encounters are fast for me.

There is virtually no time between portals now but you do still need to sit and wait for mobs to exit them.
I dual boxed this instance for a bit on my druid tank to get my lowbie up a few levels. My tank had over 50k health at the time so most of the packs were pretty quick and easy. The only time I really had issues in the instance was with the big floating eye boss (I forget his name but he is the one that spawns in the upper right when looking from the entrance door). He has an eye beam that was hitting me for something like 3k per second and was nearly constant. The next time I got him I just exited the dungeon and reset because I didnt want the repair bill hehe

Well Wowhead and Wowiki have the dungeon info wrong. You have to be 72 to enter the instance. Guess I'll have to try this in another level or two.

Its really bad, take it from me... i've tried everything over 70 basically.
If you can stand the grind (4-6 hours per level) you can boost your toons in icecrown glacier farming the groups of 6 converted heroes. Thats how I did it... but it is such a grind you wanna kill yourself after a while, though it is mindless. Just fly your alts in the air and make sure your map is zoomed all the way out...if you are off the alts minimap a bit you are fine, but dont stray too far.

I just completed my first team with under 200 quests completed. About 120 were in EK and 80 in BT. After BT, because I had been doing so much dungeons, I didn't have a clue where to go.
I just got confused with quests and ended up instancing. Violet Hold was actually pretty decent to me. I liked it as a grind spot. The only time I got annoyed was when Ichoron spawned. I never wiped once, but I did have a 6+ minute kill once on him and 3 additional portals spawned. I pulled that one off with only four men too since my friend was AFK in the entrance playing one of my other toons.
I think it would be really good if there was an actual thread on the possibility for people. Like I haven't heard of IC Glacier Converted Heroes? Is that good? What level would you start?

usable from a really low level... if you summon them into the cliffs above, but that limits your kill radius. 68 is the lowest i'd start there.

Ahh, converted heroes. How I miss Sense Undead on the paladin.
Violet Hold is okay and all, but like someone said it's kind of a pain waiting for the next group to spawn (Especially after bosses). Some bosses are really quite haX too, like the void reaver guy who will shoot your alts at the zoneline through that door. Or Ichoron who will just put up that shield the second you start damaging her, sometimes requiring a 5th phase 2.
One rule that's never changed: If the enemies are green or yellow to your high-level, your alt will get a lot more XP. So Violet Hold is good this way, and HoL/HoStone are a little better.
I think something that might help determine where to go is http://www.wowwiki.com/Championing, since reputation translates quite well into XP. So somewhere like violet hold that only gives 1300 rep per run but somewhere like Drak'tharon keep (available at 72) gives 2000. (yeah I know stuff like Old Kingdom gives 2300, but who would do a full clear of that place?)
Incidentally, DTK is one level below VH in terms of enemies.
Gun'Drak feels faster to me than VH, also. Pre-4.0 it was available at 71. Lots of corners where you can hide the alts, which requires more micro, but you could just get through the entire dungeon only having to move them about 3 times.
(i'm thinking bottom of the ramp, then bottom of Elemental Big Statue Guy's stairs, then top of the stairs after the spear-jerks on mammoths are dead)
So honestly I think at 77, HoS or HoL are the way to go. I know I know it's horrible, bear with it for just a few runs. No more than 10. After that, 78+ Utgarde Pinnacle is amazing.

Voilet hold would suck to boost in. The fact that you gotta wait pisses me off everytime I get it lol. Good for justice points tho.
The wator gobule boss is a pain in the crack to box lol.

Like everyone else said Ichoron is a major pain in the ass. Thanks for the feedback guys.

Uh... Ichoron is ridiculously easy... Stand by the clickers...dps her down to like 5 click it and continue dpsing... (keep your back facing the wall at all times)... When she knocks you back run to the next clicker as the adds die. Rinse Repeat Profit.
I would think that a good spot for grinding would be right by Freya in Sholazar - you will continually be fighting because the mobs constantly respawn. Hover your slaves in the air, slaughter the endless stream of undead until you get bored. Not bad for farming cloth and green items, either.
