which is better:
5 shamans
OR
1paladin and 4 shamans
I want to get to 70 ASAP so i was thinking the pali for instance grinding, but i would want 5 shamans for PvP i think... i dont know... thoughts?

I'm using 1xPally/4xShamen and I like having a dedicated tank. With 5x Shaman I'd be running and kiting like a fool even on lower level instances. It won't matter much either way if you get a 70 to boost you with instance runs.. running this set together has taken longer than I expected without higher level boosting. It would only take longer without a tank in instances. So far, world mobs all drop in 1x cast of lightning bolt and 1x cast of earth or frost shock from 4 of them.
a paladin brings more to the group than what a 5th set of totems, heroisms and elementals.

I started as 5 x shaman, and replaced my main with a paladin at 30, and everything became so much easier! And it's also a lot more fun!
My pala is 42 now, the shammies 41. Instances are very easy, running Uldaman atm for the quests, never had a wipe, never even ran into any problems!
1 more level and I'm gonna try ZF, I need a challenge!

the paladin brings the milkshake to the yard!
I would level 5shammies to 20 then hand level a pally to 20
As the pally has consecration for uber tankage!

Seems like you never actually tried 5 shamans  . Dont have to kite anything yet and never have. Mobs are so weak in instances and if I need to I can use my main shaman as a tank; shamans are very OP.

QFT. It also holds mobs away from your delicate 5hp fire totems if you're aoe'ing. Did you ever notice that if your totem kills a mob and you didn't touch it, you get no XP?
Works great for skinning grind-sessions. :)
As for 5 shammies for PvP, it is VERY difficult to multibox both a healer and dps at the same time. Ellay is running 4 dps and a dedicated healer. I did a couple skirmishes with my 5 shammies (i had a 5th resto shammy waiting at 70, leveled 1x pally 4x shammy for the others) and got completely toasted because I couldn't react fast enough on my healing.

So I'd agree, you won't have to kite things as long as you can hold aggro up until your mid 40's. But don't expect the same out of later instances. ;) Mail is still squishy.

I'm doing 5 shamans and I tank fine, I have yet to HAVE to kite gogo 5x gift of the naaru on boss fights... I cleared slave pens at lvl 62 with no problems. The hardest fight for me by far so far has been Nazan in ramparts. I like the 5th shaman for 1 Extra Grounding Totem, Totem of Wrath, Chain Heal, Tremor, Etc... It's very nice utility for your burst dps. I also have a 70 druid and 70 paladin on seperate accounts that I've ran with 4 shamans to test stuff out. PvE wise it is easier with a tank, but not necessary and I'm 99.9% sure in pvp 5x sham > 4xsham 1xpal.

Remember at 66 shaman get Earth Elemental Totem, using 1-5 of them generally gives you enough time to dps the boss down. The only issue is learning bosses, if you wipe and don't have enough Totems left then you will have to wait 20 minutes. It only ever was an issue from the first boss of Sethekk, now I do it with 2 Earth and 2 Fire and its fine even if I somehow wipe.
