Hey.

Well, I have 4 or 6 computers that I run WoW on from time to time, and several of those have multiple installs on them for various purposes, plus, another person on the same net is also looking to install the patch, which leads us to:

* WoW patch locations have moved around several times since the beginning

* For the pre-patch files (the 4.7GB payload we downloaded over the past few weeks), I was able to get them onto the LAN and then copy them around to the other computers very quickly. (The files and directories were contained in a directory called Updates.)

* Now the post-patch files (looking like 1.4GB payload) don't seem to all be going into one location, some files are ending up in Updates, some are ending up in Data and Data/enUS, and some are going into Temp.

Which means:

* If I started the install on 5 computers and walked away, the bandwidth would cut into 5ths because the install process just trudges straight though wihtout prompting and

* WIth the files being seemingly being spread around, it's looking like I may be having to download the 1.4GB payload up to 11 times.

Now, I admit I'm tired, and the payload is still arriving so I can't see what willbe left after the fact, but I'm left feeling that this new downloading method won't be good for some of us.

I'm likely to be patching one WoW install and then copying around that copy of it to all the places it need to be. (This is distasteful, because it seems to mean that each and every patch that comes out will require this same copying of the entire directory each time.)

c:\games\wow\Updates

Copy that folder and the patcher will just verify it and then install.

Well, perhaps I didn't explain it well enough. This line from the blue-post Re: 4.0.1 known issues list (just posted here) sums it up nicely:

No standalone patch allowing players with restricted internet connections to bypass the use of the Blizzard Downloader
Yes, the pre-patch files are in ./Updates, as I described. The 1.4GB patch that the new downloader is not in ./Updates.

I moved my fully patched (with the 1.3GB) game to my wifes computer, so I didnt have to download the 1.3GB again. Well, the launcher on her computer doesnt recognize the install and wants to download that shit (the 1.3GB) again. So for now, she has to use the wow.exe to start her game. And even better, I can't even start my main WoW install with a non-admin user (WinXP). Had to make a copy of the folder to be able to start it. This new client is totally f'ed up.

One machine had patch failures. The other machine patched up perfect. I copied over the whole install to the failed machine minus the wtf, interface and cache folders. Copied in my old interface (minus blizzard files so it could create the new stuff), wtf and let the game recreate the cache.

If the second machine had failed I was going to do the full download from the battle.net installer. Now to wait for all the addons to update. :)

I copied everything in /updates to my second computer, then to the individual folders. I had one install fail about 1/2 way through, but the rest seemed to do fine. Maybe the one you copied was corrupt in the first place?

man that blizzard downloader is buggy as hell, i had to try 3 different computers until it worked.

then i copied the finished version to my other machines
and the downloader started loading "more stuff" because of different configs.

this "one big torrent file & peer-stream single files from it" idea sucks big time...

1.3GB - that would be nice.... my EU client is updating 5.29GB (luckly I had some foresight and left one machine running overnight to D/l the patch and copied the files over to the other 2 machines)

Edit: that was just the start bit - now it wants to Dl another 1.6gb - I feel sorry for those people on a capped broadband that only allows a certain amount of bandwith per month
