Hi,
I have just goten back into WoW and have created a 5 man shaman team.
I was playing a mage before I quite and that was easy.
Pyro, Fireball, Fireblast, Scorch, scorch scorch with x15 stacking spell power trinket for everything. However now I am playing Shamans and well everything has goten harder.
I boosted my way with my mage so I haven't really played them at all. Now at 40 I thought I would try a run through SM. But I open up my Spellbook and litterally think "zomg". I don't understand how to play Shamans and skipping ahead so far into the levels without any play experience makes me feel like a total nooby.
I honestly do not know what I should be doing. How I should form my 5 man group. Sould I drop one Shaman and add a Palladin for tanking... I can grant levels to get the Palladin in and drop one Shaman.
Some really fundamental questions....
What are the different Shaman talent specs for? ie Enhanc and Elemental. Should I have 1 Resto, and 4 ele? Or 2 ele and 2 enhancement?
I also don't know how I should rotate my DPS? What spells and totems are a MUST have, while what totems are just spam in my spellbook? The same for spells.
Thanks. And please don't shout!

Hi,
I don't understand how to play Shamans and skipping ahead so far into the levels without any play experience makes me feel like a total nooby.
I honestly do not know what I should be doing.
Play one solo for a little bit to get a feel for game mechanics.
I think you have expectations that are too high if you want someone to reply to this message with something that will instantly cure your nooby-ness...

Boylston: Yes, thats my plan tonight. I'm going to try a run through deadmines on one of them.
I think my main issue is to know what the best spell rotation should be. I'm at work from 9-5 each day and every 1 minute, I have about 2 minute down time (due to the nature of the work I do) so I have ALOT of reading time.
I've been reading as much as I can, but theres only so much available content on this forum.
Thanks for that Khatovar. I'll add that to my bookmarks of three forums :)

While I don't know if you're PvPing or PvEing, I am going to assume you're PvPing with 5 shaman. If your target doesn't have tenacity, normally 5x flame shocks are going to kill your enemy (if not instantly, in a few seconds). If it requires more than one cast to kill something, the typical shaman sequence is Flame Shock, Lava Burst, Lightning Bolts until Lava Burst is back up. Flame Shock when it fades, repeat. Multiple targets just throw in a Chain Lightning in place of one of the Lightning Bolts. You can also spec into the talent that lowers the cooldown on your Fire Nova, and glyph it, and be able to Fire Nova every (4?) seconds. Five Fire Novas combined with five magmas do some pretty insane damage.
EDIT: If you're solely going to do instances, you won't get far into WolK instances without a tank. Most people seem to like Paladins these days (I used a DK early in WolK when they were insanely OP). Four elemental shaman can easily take care of healing and DPS, especially once you get geared.

The endgame rotation is quite different from the leveling up rotation, since Lava Burst is only available as of lvl 75.
Basically you have 3 spells as a shaman.
1) shock spells (frost, earth & flame shock), frost has a slowing effect, earth has a melee slow effect & flame shock is a dot)
2) Lightning Bolt, no cooldown, long cast time
3) chain lightning: a spell that jumps to different targets with a 6 second cooldown
Your shock spells are the only ones that are castable while running At lvl 75 you pretty much will go for flame shock, lava burst and fill the CD with lightning bolts (or chain lightning for AOE). The reason is that your lava burst will have a guaranteed crit whenever flame shock (the dot) is on that target (self casted).
So while leveling up you could macro somethng like
/castsequence reset=combat/alt flame shock, chain lightning, lightning bolt, lightning bolt, lightning bolt
I prefer flame shock when leveling up because if i need to move during combat, it still ticks. But thats a personal choice. Next to that you have your totems. Try to cover all buffs i'd say, by using call of elements (thats a predefined set of 4 totems that you can cast). I'm not sure if you still have to do a quest to unlock all totems, but you should check that somewhere.
You have windshear which is an interrupt, you have thunderstorm as a knock back and your cc is hex & earthbind totem.
That's pretty much it. My general advice would be: try to start with only using the bare minimum of spells, and work your way up. Or play one shaman solo for a level to get a feel.

Thanks Zenga. That was a real high quality post that covered quite a lot.
Can I get good synergy going with the 4 shamans (if I go along with one paladin).
Can I stack totems some how or use them to my advtantage?

copy / paste post from this old thread (http://www.dual-boxing.com/showpost.php?p=293294&postcount=3)
Earth & fire elemental, fire nova, searing & magma totems stack. Obviously since they do damage.
Healing totem stacks, mana totem does not stack.
Frost, nature, fire resistance totems do not stack
Strength of earth, stone skin, windfury, flametongue, wrath of air do not stack (they provide a buff).
Totem of wrath buff does not stack, however ... if you are glyphed for it, it's worth to drop multiple and replace them with a damaging totem, as you will retain the glyph buff for 5 minutes on each toon that did cast ToW
Tremor & cleansing totems are 'pulsing' totems, they have an effect every x amount of time. Thus stacking them (i.e. drop them at several times) will result in a faster response.
Mana tide totems should stack as far as i know.
I stack my grounding totems as well (i.e. they are on round robin).
Same for my earthbind totems.
blessing of wisdom does not stack with mana spring totem
resistance aura's don't stack with resistance totems
when i log in my shamans i'll post a list of my 'leveling' totems
edit:
my palladin casts kings on shamans
shaman 1: strength of earth, totem of wrath, mana spring totem, wrath of air
shaman 2: stoneskin totem, totem of wrath, cleansing, windfury
shaman 3: tremor totem, frost resistance totem, fire resistance totem, nature resistance totem
shaman 4 (healer): tremor totem, flametongue totem, healing stream totem, grounding totem
I use 2x totem of wrath because i often play those 2 alone, and tend to forget to switch the totem, they do not stack however. I cast those totems through call of elements, and at the same time. So my 2 tremor totems don't have any additional effect. If one was to get destroyed there is however still a backup.
I have a round robin button (ie. one shaman casts 1 totem at a time) for cleansing, grounding & tremor
on shaman 1 i use: /castsequence reset=alt cleansing totem, grounding totem, tremor,,
on shaman 1 i use: /castsequence reset=alt ,cleansing, grounding, tremor
on shaman 1 i use: /castsequence reset=alt grounding, tremor,, cleansing
on shaman 1 i use: /castsequence reset=alt tremor, ,cleansing, grounding
(obviously replace spell names with the fully written ones)
those are bound to the same key, but i almost only use it for pvp
and on a final note, yes paladin & ele shaman have a great synergy
