View Full Version : WoW disconnects my network

Hi,
I have problems running several copies of WoW on my machine. It seems like it works up to a point where the network traffic load gets too heavy, and the connection between my NIC and router breaks.
I have an Asus Rampage II GENE motherboard with an onboard Realtek 8111C PCI Express Gigabit LAN controller.
My router is a Speedtouch 585 (w/WLAN), connected through RJ45.
When a disconnect happens, all the lights are blinking as normal on my router. I can simply eject and insert the network cable into my PC again and the connection is restored.
I have tried several network cables, so this is not the problem.
What could cause this? A defect NIC? Wrong network settings (checksum offload etc)? A shitty router?

I've had a similar problem (although not recently). I'll lose connection between my PC and my Router and cannot use any interenet functions until I do 'diagnose & repair' feature in Win7 or if I restart Windows. I haven't attempted to resolve, but it could be some of the ideas you mentioned, as well as a driver issue or other OS network setting. I doubt its a hardware issue. I know when I installed Win7 last December I changed a lot of system settings based on forum suggestions (both here & warcrafts official forum user suggestions) to improve performance. Any one of those tweeks could be causing my situation.

I had a pseudo related issue with my PS3 when I got it. Whenever I turned it on and it connected wirelessly to my network it would kick one of my computers offline. But it was odd, it would still be connected, but it would just kill any existing connection or stream. I noticed this because it would cause pandora to stop and I would have to refresh the page and everything was good again. A firmware upgrade to the router resolved it.
Look for any firmware and driver updates for your nic and router.
My belkin router kept disconnecting every like 30-60 mins and this really ticked me off when i was playing online, i fixed it by disabling the router NAT firewall.

I've tried disabling the firewall but that didnt change anything.
Not really sure where to find firmware upgrade for this router, its not mine either, its provided from my ISP and included in the monthly payment.

I doubt this will fix your issue, as I think the only way to fix it is by restarting your computer. May be of interest to others if they have the issue.

A computer that is running Windows Server 2008 R2 or Windows 7 stops responding randomly. Applications or services that are running on the computer stop working correctly. Additionally, you cannot log on to the computer by using the remote desktop connection utility.

You could hard set your speed/duplex setting for your network adapter, but it's doubtful it would help.
Most likly something is faulty, if you can borrow a cheapo network switch you could try putting that inbetween. update the firmware on the router? update your motheboard firmware\network drivers etc.

You don't mention which OS you're running. I have an 8111B in my system that I've used with 3 different routers without a problem. Have you tried resetting the router to factory defaults? Did the problem just start happening recently on a router/system you've been using for a while without any trouble, or is your system or router a new addition?

I'm running Win7 Home Edition.
I have tried resetting the router, no give.
It started happening when I purchased a new rig, didnt happen on my old one. Of course I switched from Win XP to Win 7 as well.

Win7 isn't the problem. It's either your NIC driver is setting incorrect options or your NIC FW or HW is bad.
