I currently 5-box with an I-7 920, 12 gigs of DDR3, a 40G SSD and a GTX275. I have no problems with this setup--It's stable with great FPS even in Dalaran. However I get the first installment of my re-enlistment bonus here in October and I was thinking about what upgrades I'd like to make for Cataclysm.

One thing I keep seeing people talk about is this fabled 24 gigs of ram. I'd like someone to point me in the right direction basically--Should I upgrade my system or wait another generation or two or processors/mobos before I invest more money? I'm not sure what kind of hit Cata will be on performance.

In any case thanks in advance for helping out :)

I'm going to hold out for the 8 core processors I think. Also, I'll wait till most new MBs have USB 3.0 and the 6gb sata interfaces.

I also want to go for 24 gigs like you said too.

I just bought a crucial 256gb SSD drive that is crazy fast.

The other thing I was considering was just buying a whole new comp so that I could 10 box if I wanted. I should have around 1500 bucks... Hmm. Something to consider I guess.

I think I have almost the exact same setup you have. I'm trying to wait as long as I can until the x58 MB looks like it's getting replaced, and I'll get the best processor available for it at the time. It will probably be time to upgrade to 24GB RAM (should be cheap enough by then). The nice part is that your current comp should still handle everything for another couple years, and then you can upgrade it once to extend its life a bit more.

Hmmm.

Guess I should think about a second comp for 10x action...

Best to hold off and get a CPU with more cores later unless u want to 10x box now. Larger amounts of ram will be cheaper later as will everything. Does upgrading ram beyond 12g even make any performance difference if ur only 5x boxing on ur system?

If you decide that you want a second computer, you might consider this laptop:

It looks REALLY nice.
Incredible graphics card, quad core 1080p screen etc...
