So I just hit 60 with my first team and I'm going to take a break from boosting to level my priest, pally, 3X hunter team.
Since this is my first team to 60 I'm feeling a little overwhelmed with all the setup I have to do, and also I'm a perfectionist. How I'm trying to do it is to have modifiers for each classes abilities, i.e. <alt>+<shift> for all priest specific abilities, <alt>+<control> for all pally abilities and then <alt>+<cntrl>+<shift> for all hunter specific ablities.
Am I making this much more complicated than is necessary?
(Also note that I am binding the groups of modifiers to buttons on my G500 mouse, I don't plan on pressing those keys on the keyboard for every ability)
i think you might be over complicating a bit.
i believe most abilities can be grouped in a few categories:
- normal rotation (dps or heal or threat)
- burst ( big dps or heal enhancers, Power Infusion, BloodLust, Avenging wrath etc)
- oh shit (survival abilities: Feign Death, bubble, deperate prayer etc)
- regen (bandage, shadowfiend, evocation etc)
add categories at will, but keep it a small number. (i would say 10 max)
other categories can include buffs or aoes for example
once you classified all the abilities, you can build macros around them, using cast sequences or modifiers. but modifiers make things more complicated if you're using a FTL targetting setup (well, i find it more complicated anyway)
You might be able to make each category into a single macro, or maybe 2.
then, bnd all 'same purpose' macros to the same keybind on all toons, so that when you need big burst, you click the corresponding keybind and all toons (no matter what class) start their burst abilities.
and so on
and so forth :-)
There was another thread where people explained how they did their keybinds, i'll try and find it

I guess my main problem with setting it up atm is that I can't get the modifier keys to pass to the other WoW clients through ISboxer. If I could get that then I'd be on my way

if you're using the FTL modified keys that means that ISBoxer is already using those modifier keys to pass keystrokes to the right toons. that's how FTL works, each toon needs to have a personal modifier key. (you can see/define them in ISBoxer)
Obviously if you're setting mod keys yourself, they might conflict with the default ones from ISBoxer, and the spells won't be cast.
Check your isboxer config, you might be able to change the default config keys to more complex modifier keys that won't conflict with your simpler mods.
For example, you might be able to set FTL for toon1 to 'left-shift / right-shift / left-ctrl' or whatever, insttead of simply 'shift'
good luck :-)

Well....I changed the FTL modifiers in ISboxer so that each character has 5 different modifier keys. I'm also using Jamba which at this point I think that might be the problem. I haven't assigned any keys for the FTL setup in that. Third, I give up for tonight, I need to sleep and this initial setup is starting to aggravate

I feel your pain. I've been trying to setup a toggle keymap (like Ualaa's guide explains) for eclipse procs and aspect changes, etc. and I think I've grown a small tumor on my brain :(
I think you're suffering from the classic first-time ISBoxer user problem of confusing mapping & repeating. By default, ISBoxer does mapping so it isn't going to pass the modifiers through to your slaves unless you make the mod+key a hotkey also.
That said if you're trying to make every single ability of every toon available on a separate key sequence, you are definitely unnecessarily over-complicating things.
Create a starter macro for your tank and each DPS toon that gives them a half-way decent rotation. Don't try to max your DPS output; you'll just give your tank aggro issues.
Assign the macro to the same key press on all you damage dealing toons. Use one of the keys map the ISBoxer wizard created for you so that you get an FTL setup for free
Either use a healing addon (e.g. Vuhdo, HealBot) and repeater regions, or create a set of 5 macros that explicitly heal each of your toons and assign each macro to a separate key. Remember not to assign them to the dps key
Try working on non-elite mobs: one at a time, then in groups, then try an instance. Be prepared to die a lot at first.
Once you're comfortable with all that, then start adding other things to the mix
