View Full Version : What KEEPS you multi-boxing?

I'm not sure that I will continue through cata, or maybe just take a long break and play single toons for a while... it's becoming quite a grind it seems even more than other things. PVP is basically 2-3 buttons no matter what comp you play... other than arena bgs are just faceroll.

The only problem is now i have no idea what toons i actually WANT to play. So many classes to choose from. I think i might actually be burnt out for the first time in a long time. I feel that continuing to box is going to keep me from actually doing quite a bit in cata. Who knows though. I still like the idea of 1-2 warriors + 2-3 dks + priest... but who knows. I still like the idea of dk/rets for pvp though even with all the changes.

So i guess what i'm asking is... what keeps you interested?

More like you are burnt out for the second time in a couple of months. But the extreme extent of your money making plans is really what would limit your time doing things, not the boxing itself.

What keeps me interested is that I can do what ever I want, when ever I want to. Nothing is making me do it constantly.
I play a single toon mainly, raiding and stuff. And I multibox as many teams as I feel like, in between when I have time.

I was never really burnt out the first time, i just thought i was. It sucks having OCD about doing things...and over doing them.

<snickers> can I have your stuff?

I kid ya man. I find even a day or two off from the game can help with Burn out. For example, I'm switching ISP's at the end of this month, so I'll be without Internet, probably at least 3 days, if not more.

(Going Wild Blue instead of Hughesnet. Long story, basically I'm the cheapest man in the world.)

I'm kind of looking forward to it, as a mini vacation, not only from the game, But also from other Forums I help Moderate, The constant email chatter, etc. etc.

But as for what keeps me coming back? The same thing that keeps me logging into here 3-4 times a day. The people. Sure I do most of my gaming solo, but that doesn't mean I don't help my guild also, and can fill in just about anytime they need me.

The other thing is the cost. I could go out to a bar, and waste as much cash in one night As I do in a months gaming. And not even have a good feeling afterwards, like I do when I accomplish something new online.

Take a few days off, See how ya feel, then come back when your ready. It's not going anywhere man.

Stephen

I really don't want to raid 5 nights a week.

Erm, i log in when i like to, do whatever i feel like doing and that's about it.

I enjoy BG and arena so that fills most time, but i could also go do icc 25 or raid SW. I don't understand that people can put themself to do things like getting Loremaster or The insane. props for the effort they put into it. Same with your army of chars, but i would definitely not enjoy that. Feels like a job then, not something to enjoy.

So i guess we're pretty much the opposite of eachother :D

if you're asking yourself that question (wtf do i do this?) it's probably time to have a break.
It means it's not fun anymore, just a habit.

I play wow because i like the game, and it switches my brain off after dealing with work all day and then the kids at home. It's my 'me' time.
I box because i like the added challenge and because i hate spending the precious few hours i have searching for a group.

it's important to set yourself achievable and meaningful goals. One of my friends found new interest in wow after deciding to go for the 'insane in the menbrane' achievement.
once he got that he dediced to do every single quest in the game, he's just over 5000 competed and still going.
he single boxing it, and can spend several nights just trying to get a quest (like say Mag's head or whatever)
just like some here go for mountain of mounts or 5 shadowmournes. in the end, it's not the goal that's important, it's the trip

I think this is why alot of us do it. Most of the guys on Cael Horde that box talked about this a few days ago. Most of us have kids or work jobs that have strange hours, or see us permantly on-call. Its easier for us to appreciate the time we do get in WoW though as our time is pretty limited. I remember when I was studying, with no serious girlfriends and a part time job where I set my own hours - I played MMO's pretty hardcore.

You will find you enjoy WoW more the less you play or better yet, if your time suddenly becomes limited because you fill it with something else you will value your time to yourself a bunch more. Try making a google docs spreadsheet with a list of things you want to achieve - but dont stick to it like a task list. Simple use it to remind yourself of goals you can do when you login and dont know what to do with yourself.

I'd say take a nice long break before Cataclsym. Dont be burnt out the day the thing launches!

The way you post and play though - I almost get the impression you are using WoW for far more than escapism. You seem like you've got something to prove or achieve but don't really know what it is. I think you'll find its this chop and changing and constant posts that get you the reactions from some that it does.

I like to be self sufficient.

Be able to run an instance whenever I feel like it, and if I feel like it... ditch the instance just before the first or last boss.

I also really like blowing content, be it a mob or another player, in a second or so. Or being able to do group quests that others need to LFG for.

But I take frequent breaks, not logging in much over the summer. We've finished our Cherry/Fruit season (6 weeks) and had a couple weeks before corn started. I only logged in 3 times in two weeks, but maybe an hour each time; more of the transmutes. Similarly, I had three or four 2-3 week breaks during the year, and will probably do the same this fall/winter/spring too.

I just play for fun, log in and chat to guildies while boosting the legion. I work very strange and long hours, sometime I can't get on for a week and sometimes i'm on for a few hours everyday. I don't really instance much, i'm an altoholic and am in the process of levelling many toons before Cata, but only level them with rested xp for 2 level boosts. This will probably stop when I get another team to 70 and start the NR grind again (this time with flying from 68 :D!).

I play for 'me' time, gives me a break from the pointless trash on tv and also gives me something to do while my brain switches off ;)

I think in the future im just going to be using my boxing crew to make money for other characters. I enjoyed things like HoR, ToC when they first came out and I was trying it along with everyone else. When gear was not overpowered, and we were working really really hard to get that shit down. I look forward to the future changes for shamans and cant wait to see how they play out.

However -- I'm beginning to just work on my solo priest and prot paladin.

Taking a game to seriously will allways make itboring, its like anything, girls, cars or whatever, I take small breaks like for a month or two when i need a change, try other games, the thing that gets me back to boxing is the feeling that im the one doing it, and you dont have to Pug.. which is awsome! :P

Well, to start off, I like to quit the game, and THEN like just two days later set some unreasonable goal for myself to accomplish in-game. Nothing keeps me interested in the game more than going from apathy to masochism is less than a week.

Then, I like to drum up support for a community based service of some sort, say a guide on how to fish, claim to be "working" on it, promise that it will be completed and that I won't flake out THIS time, and then promptly do just that - don't deliver. Never gets old hahaha!

And on those really dark days, when I just can't seem to figure out why I should go on with this all, I like to post, for the 3000th time, asking what everybody else does to keep interested in some sort of an attempt to self-validate through the actions of others.

This isn't a complete list, but it's a few of my favorites. Hope it helps!

I lol'd. This shit is priceless!

Just add in the random self congratulatory post, since only other boxers will understand the pain of what I went thru to achieve said personal achievement and sometimes I am just looking for a little personal validation. Usually a "grats" or 'nice job' is sufficient.

Not sure if most are just joking around but seems like people are just giving shodokan a hard time. I think we get enough hate from "non-boxers" and don't need any here. I for one like people who post alot, gives me something to read at work. :)

Any case, quitting for 9 months and coming back seems to keeps things fresh. Concentrating on pvp and killing alliance never seems to get old either. :)

True-

My post was in general and not directed to shodokan directly. There are alot of self congratulatory posts around lately looking for self validation. I chalk it up to low self esteem.

You will never earn respect thru a video game.

True-

My post was in general and not directed to shodokan directly. There are alot of self congratulatory posts around lately looking for self validation. I chalk it up to low self esteem.

You will never earn respect thru a video game.

I disagree - you can absolutely earn a respect for someone's accomplishments even though it's video games. I don't know what else they have going on in their life so I can't comment on whether their sacrifices to get the accomplishment was a good or healthy choice, but I can still respect what they did. I certainly respect how Kromtor took an untested combination of DK+pallys and turned it into the most successful arena combo to date while starting a huge FOTM bandwagon. I can certainly respect peeps who are 10-boxing ICC, or completing 5 Shadowmournes, etc.

I agree, there are a lot of self congratulatory posts lately. IMO, some are worthy and some aren't - don't really care if someone posts them either way, because if I think their accomplishment is crap I just don't tell them congrats... doesn't mean I need to bash them, though (not saying you were, just writing in generalities now).

Respect?? Would that be like being a legend? Like Bradster for the 10 boxing or Elly for the supreme PvP titles? Being good at something will earn respect, bragging about it won't

Well we will agree to disagree. There is no accomplishment in this or any video game worthy of respect. You should play for your self and no one else. If you are only playing to gain e respect then I feel sorry for you. If you respect somebody for their accomplishments in a video game, then again I feel sorry for you.

What you call respect, I call jealousy.

What type of accomplishment (non video games) would have your respect? Respect isn't some limited commodity that can only be given to a select few people, it can be given to many and in varying degrees without losing its value. Nobody mentioned anything about playing to get respect from other people - that doesn't mean I can't respect what others are doing. Jealousy is an emotion of insecurity and fear and it usually isn't synonymous with telling someone congrats (but does go hand-in-hand with bashing someone's accomplishments)

The value each person places on it is their own. If you choose to give it freely or in varying degrees lol then that is your choice. Other people choose hold theirs to a higher standard.

Edit: I guess jealously might have been the wrong word. After thinking about it I think Envy is more appropriate.

Many people get respect for this video game. For quite a few it's not a game its a business, it's their lively hood, or its their hobby.

For example, Liquid TLO (The little one) was just some random player in starcraft beta, who now has a career on a real team. There is tons of respect for that.

I'm also surprised to see a forum that I'm used to hearing "adult" conversations from fall into such a juvinial tease fest bent simply on hurting someone else's feelings. Sure a fair amount of his posts were ego strokers, but come on... lighten up guys.

I never used to post much but I remember back in the day when every little post was appreciated, congratulated, and respected. It didn't matter if someone was bragging about their accomplishment, with bragging there was always questions asked and answered that would help the community. At least to me, nowadays some posts are what I would expect to see on the general Blizz forums and not here.

And to make it clear, I am jealous, envy, and respect (however u wanna put it) everyone who has accomplished more then I have and were nice enough to share the info on how they did it.

A great man once said

Made me laugh A LOT. You can't out troll me.... there are other places i have over 14k posts and all i do is troll. ;)

well http://www.dual-boxing.com/showthread.php?t=31670 seems to show otherwise

I lol'd

Then I saw this:

That made my day he needs a new forum title after that one.

Fat Tire, I would appreciate if you stopped being so judgemental about people when they "self congratulate" themselves. Some of us worked really really hard to achieve what we wanted and we don't come here to brag about it, we just feel proud about our achievements and like to share. Just like a 6 year old when she's "done something by herself" and comes to mom or dad to tell her what she just did, it's not bragging it's called feeling proud about oneself. Now of course, if someone is doing that all the time, then it becomes bragging and annoying, but I don't think that's the case here.

I'm happy to see when people post 1800 or 2000 ratings, it just validates how our boxer community is growing and it's not just some one off case of success how it used to be with Ellay when he was the god, and nobody else could achieve shit. That is not healthy, it's just going to cause frustration to most people, and make them give up. But when you see a bunch of "normal" people achieving similar things then it encourages people to keep going and eventually succeed.

So to everyone else, please keep posting of your achievements and don't let pompous pricks push you down.

Nice name calling at the end.

However, you described the analogy perfectly. It is like a 6 year old being proud and telling mommy about it. I wonder did you tell your mommy about your wow success?

When you see a bunch of people doing the same thing it is no longer special and should be considered normal. For sure I could see if you were the first to do well at a particular comp. However, most are just copying off of someone else's work.

However, its not against the rules here to post self congratulatory threads so by all means. Self validate.

I have gotten PMs about this topic so I know I am not the only one who lols about it.

just curious, do you think my blog/goal thread is self-congratulatory and is lol material?
http://www.dual-boxing.com/showthread.php?t=31655

I see it more like an experience sharing topic, but i'm interested in what you think about it.
There is some 'yay me!' content in there obviously, as sometimes it feels really good to finally overcome an obstacle and we *need* to share it with others.

I say congratulated or say thing at all. If we consider everthing someone else has done as the norm and ask them not to post, our forums would be empty and I would have nothing to read at work:(

To Fat Tire: You've probably been more involved in the forum then I have (as you can see member since 07 but only 50 posts) and most posts you see is the same old stuff, but for me and alot of other people who are not as active, alot of the posts are still new to us and help us out greatly. I know it may frustrate you but would appreciate some tolerance. Would hate for this site to become like some other sites where any newb posts/questions are meet with hostility and people become afraid to post anything.

While your post wasn't aimed at me, I feel like replying here. The way I see it is that this site is extremely friendly for new users. I have spent a lot of time over the past half year reading many many many posts, for both advanced and brand new players. And the tolerance here towards everyone is something totally new and unseen for me (been online since early 90s). So i'd argue with you and say that there is no sign at all that it's going (or might go) into that direction.

I'd rather think that the whole thing started with shodokan's way of posting. And that that is what bothered quite some people. Justified or not, the tone of voice was kinda elitist and self centered. When that repeats itself for some time you get to the point where it starts to work on some ppl their nerves. And that is where you end up with a very negative connotation. Myself I stay out of the drama and just pick the bits that are useful to me. But i can see that not everyone is pleased with that.

In the end we all know that when a new boxer hits a milestone like clearing his first heroic and feels like posting about it, that none one is gonna give him shit like 'hey noob shut up we've seen this 2k times before). No, the reactions are always very positive, helpful and encouraging.

What some see as pointless, some see as gratifying.

I get it.

Lets move on.

The only thing that keeps me boxing? I don't know honestly. maybe it's so I don't have to sit in LFG queue for 15 mins a character. I really only like a few of my guys (one shaman, lock, spriest and DK tank) rest of my guys I could give two shits about. I like boxing and at the same time I hate it. I don't like the feeling that I need to do everything x 5, but I do like not having to wait for shit to happen.

I just started doing it almost two months ago. I haven't been playing world of warcraft for long either, maybe four or five months, I've got one level 80 character on a different server to where my 5 boxing team resides. I can't remember why I decided to start doing it, probably something to do with instance queues and/or wierd random people in instances. Also I want to see as much of the game as I can before it changes in cataclysm, it's much easier to do that with five characters than one. Also my characters seem to die less often while questing, I can take my time during instances and really explore them fully without being rushed by other players who've been doing it for years. I've grown quite attached to my characters as a group, but its still fun to play a single character without the team, mostly in pvp though. In game get varying degrees of abuse from people because I have five characters, I can't say I enjoy that type of attention, never a dull moment. Going forwards I can't imagine not doing this, when cataclysm comes out I'll proabably get four copies and one collectors edition, but I hope cataclysm doesn't come out for a long time.

actually now i remember, LFD with pugs is bad. I remember I got kicked from one by a bunch of icc25 equipped guys right before end boss. Probably just to piss me off because they were all from same guild and knew I was only there for the frost badge. I was complexed at first, but then I got mad and threw my keyboard. :(

That's why you should order your keyboards in bulk. Having a good stock of em is worth it.

You missed the point again. It's not self validation, it's feeling proud about oneself. You read between the lines only what you want to read, which is why my opinion about you is that you are an self centered individual.

And what you said about others PM-ing you sounds like you needed self validation that what you are doing, which is criticizing people for self congratulatory posts and calling them "in need for self validation", is right.

This is not the first time you make posts where you criticize people and act like a superior being. I would rather see all day posts that say "hit 1800, yay me" then to see an arrogant prick like you keep preaching to us how we need self validation and how weak we are, while you are so strong becuase you don't post self congratulatory posts.

It is you who is weak here, becase you can't help it, you have to keep posting to prove your superiority, instead of just saying "grats mate, keep it up". When one knows they are really trully superior, they don't flaunt their superiority in front of the weaker ones. But you can't help it, can you.

The best quote I've ever heard about pride is this:

"Losers compare their achievements to others, winners compare their achievements to their goals."

Make of it what you will.

Now youre just trolling. Shame attacking me will never prove that the ability to share your personal achievement means anything more that it is does to anyone one else. Here is a hint no one (even the one who says "grats mate, keep it up) gives a shit about you more than before your posted about it. Maybe if it provided any information that other people can use to enhance their own gameplay, only then could I see it. However, most contain no information to the other users on this site other than to say look at me.

Please share the reason why you posted your own self congratulatory thread? Was it because you were proud (the word you use) and did you think that an anonymous group of wow players would be proud of you too? lol

Nothing. I'm done with this website for a while. When it's no longer fun, there's no point hanging around anymore.

Candy. Candy keeps me multiboxing. Beer also.

Serious response is that it's fun. Why is it fun? I dunno, it just is. Sometimes it's fun to not have to look for teammates. Sometimes it's fun to go and obliterate things with 5x the characters. Somteimes it's fun because I get to figure out some tricksy stuff with getting my characters to behave properly.

The instant it isn't fun is the instant I cancel.

@FT The quote was from my field hockey coach, and she got it from some other person before that, I'm sure.

I mainly continue to box cuz I really wanna get 2200 rating on all my guys. It's the only goal I have as of right now. In some ways I think it's a good thing I have not been able to do this yet, cuz it keeps me playing.

Oh and I'm very excited alemi (shaggir) came back :), I missed having a boxer in the realm who I can learn something from like who is Lich king are y r people trying to kill him

I'm such a noob in so many ways.

I haven't 'boxed in a long time, taking breaks is not a forever thing. I started 'boxing because I wanted more complexity, that's what I enjoy. But the single-box game is still entertaining, so I went back to that while dealing with other complexities in RL. I'll go back to it. Maybe in Cata, maybe sooner, maybe later. There's no reason to stay multiboxing "just because". The accounts, when frozen, don't go away. They just sit there are wait for you to be tempted back in.

What keeps me doing it is that I have so much invested in all my characters. All that work leveling up all those toons etc etc... When the game becomes stale I stop until it gets more things that interest me.

Right now I'm bored as hell with WOW/Multiboxing the whole deal. Last month I shouldn't have renewed my accounts but did like a retard and have logged in like 4 times all month. So I'm cancelling my 4 accounts until Brewfest because I need to farm the kodo/ram, and for Halloween headless horseman's mount. Kinda sucks how they are spread out where I have to drop another 150$ before Cataclysm. But after those events i'm out till Cat which shouldn't be far after that.

Really though i'm so burnt and bored with WOW that i'm playing City of Heroes for the first time and enjoying it. Also Mafia 2 finished it and will play through again it was so amazing. Just get away from WOW play some other games and WOW will be fun again.

To answer your question overall. Playing one character is boring in light of what you can do multiboxing. Going in a dungeon with 4 other people I feel as if they hold me back and it's less of a challenge but more frustrating. When I do a dungeon by myself with my team I feel that sense of accomplishment.
