Hello again!
I'm looking into buying my RAM this week for my Asus P6T Deluxe v2 mobo, and I know that 12GB is pretty much the staple amount for a 5 box setup. Was looking through the qualified vendors list (QVL) and didn't see what I wanted but a lot of similar modules. The kit I want is:
http://m.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820145321
Would it be safe to assume that this kit would work in my rig or is there another possible kit that would work or be better suited. Was hoping to use this one in case I felt froggy and decided to max it out at 24GB with a second kit later on.
Feedback, banter, and gossip appreciated. ;)

A lot of RAM modules will still work even if not listed on the QVL. However, if you encounter problems with the motherboard and contact Asus they will probably give you shit about not using RAM that was on the QVL.
The only time I have had issues with getting an ASUS motherboard to boot was when the RAM was not on the QVL.
If it doesn't boot it will be hard to change the timing to get it to run, if the default does not work.
Not saying it will not work, just you may find your self in a jam with nothing to do but buy new RAM.

edit -- I have put together 5 ASUS machines todate, the latest a P6X58D-E all work out of the box except the one I mentioned above

Makes sense. I was just thinking/hoping that the list wasn't updated because there are no 12gb kits listed on it from any manufacturer. They have a lot corsair modules listed though so I might just cross my fingers and hope for the best.
Is there any performance difference between a 3x4gb kit vs a 6x2gb kit? Unsure if I can put more than 1 stick with XMP in per channel.

It would make sense if they listed single sticks on the QVL and that you can use any number of those sticks. The main thing that makes RAM Work or not is the voltage. You want the voltage the MB tells you or it might not boot right away. If there is a concern, get the Asus list and plug it into Corsair's chart (or call them) They are supposed to have great service people.

Yes there is a performance difference between 4Gb sticks and 2Gb sticks; the 4 Gb parts have much higher input capacitance values, which loads the signals. With all other things being equal the 4Gb stick must run slower. When you put in twice as many 2Gb sticks the loads add up and so you run slower with 6 sticks as compared to 3. This is why not to go to 24G if you don't need it.
There may well be a good reason why there are no 12Gb kits on the QVL. The initial parameters come from the SPD data contained in the RAM you install. IF those parameters result in a configuration that will not POST then you don't have an opportunity to go into the BIOS and change them. You’re sort of done.
Well sort of done you can swap the RAM out to something that will POST and adjust the parameters then switch the RAM back and get it to run, but it is a hassle. Been there done that.
With Triple channel all 3 of the RAM’s need to have matched timing because the DRAM controller is going to use the same timing for all three parts. The kits are suppose be matched timing.

I think I'm going to go with

I would really rather have a 3x4gb kit, but its not on the QVL. Might try talking to someone from Corsair tonight and find out from them if the 4gb sticks definitely will not work.

This is correct and you not only should never overclock your ram - it wont hurt to underclock your ram.
But underclocked ram is still WAY WAY faster then disk access.
That being said you will still get no texture loading lag with "slow" 24G ram.
Also yes use the QVL ram only, don't scrimp on some bucks for an unstable system.
Go down to 1066 ram (irrc thats the slowest for X58) if you have to and get 4G chips in my opinion.
Sure would be nice to talk blizzrd into storeing the textures in a seperate directory that could be on another drive, as thats what has to be swaped out all the time and the rest of wow could be on a disk drive.

Tried to pull up the QVL tonight, and there is are two different lists... one that was the original QVL and another is an update to the QVL. I'm not able to view either lists because of work computer settings blocking it. I did most of the legwork finding it. Was wondering if any kind and gracious gamer would look at the updated list and let me know what the best kit for a 12gb solution would be. The website is:
http://support.asus.com/download/download.aspx?Slanguage=en-us&product=1&model=P6T%DELUXE%20V2&type=map&f_type=34
My operating system will be Windows 7 64bit.
As it is now, I definitely know the 6x2gb kit from corsair is on the list and will work. Would really like if someone could check the updated list and see if there is a better kit of 12gb, preferably 3 matched 4gb sticks from corsair.
The only 12GB kit on the list is from Kingston.

Thanks Targ! I really owe you one.
Alcattle- I know it isn't a really "recent" update, but all I had to go off of was the mobo manual that came with it. And who knows how outdated that is.
I just pulled up the pricing for the Kingston kit and its almost $600!!! That's $100 more than the corsair kit that I was looking into originally. Heard Kingston has a pretty decent product line, but Corsair is the true king of RAM imho. Any good or bad feedback about Kingston?
