currently i have :

Quad Core Q6600
2x corsair 2gb) 1066 ram
Nvidia 9800GT
Asus P5KPL-AM/PS
Vista x64 ultimate

was thinking of upgrading to

Asus P6X58D-E Intel Mainboard - 6x DDR3 / 6x Sata / Gigabit Lan / LGA 1366
i7 930
Kingston DRR3 12gb (3x4gb)
Asus ATI EAH5770CU2DI-1GD5 RADEON 5770

would it be cheap getting 8gb ram and going with win7? (cheaper + better performance)?

hehe you should TALK IN CAPS A LA TERRY PRATCHETT. (if you don't know what i'm on about, you haven't lived ;) )

My personal opinion would be to upgrade to 8 gig ram if you're a little short on cash and leave the quad core in place until you REALLY want to upgrade, then get a new PC.

Pretty much the cookie cutter I7 setup. Asus P6 any version, triple channel ram 8 or 12 gb and a 1gb ram video card.

I use a P6 plain jane MB's (i7 920's) on both pc's with 12gb (6x2gb) on the boxing machine and 6gb(3x2gb) on the other. Both have ATI 48xx or 49xx 1gb cards. This setup coupled with win7 is superb. Get 2 monitors and you will be in boxing heaven.

The ram prices are so good right now I would get the full 12gb and populate all the slots 6 x 2gb. Do it upfront and save the pain of mismatched ram in the future.

Get the X58 m/b, 920, and get 4G X 3 chips for now and later you wont have to toss them if you want to go to 24G ram. A bit more cost right now but big savings when you want to go to 24G for no lag. Make sure to only get 4G chips that have been tested to work with your m/b

you can't go wrong with win7 it is a great upgrade by itself. i put a comment in the other active build thread, take a look at it, pretty much the same suggestions.
