View Full Version : Dual boxing and EVE

I’ve recently just started my 2nd trail run of Eve as I am burning out on WoW. I’ve read thread posts in this section but I’m a little confused about Eve and multi-boxing, and I was hoping to get some feedback.
My background: currently I am dual boxing in WoW using Octopus, Jamba and macros. I’ve stuck to button broadcasting only, as I am not sure how to setup up mouse click broadcasting and tbh button broadcasting suits me fine.
But I am getting bored with WoW and am turned off by the whole RealId concept, so when I play now it’s limited to raiding on my main or grinding another team to 80 (my 2 sexy locks are on 73 atm).
Now from talking to guildies who have played Eve, it seems an easy dual-box setup is one toon mining and jettisoning cargo pods, while the 2nd toon sits there in a barge and runs the pods back to base when they are full.
I could see this getting boring fast and would be looking at something a little more complex in the future, such as trading, manufacturing and transporting, maybe one of the toons would transport the crap to sell while the other guards him.
Now to my EVE questions :)
Can you dual box in a similar way in EvE as you can in WoW using Octopus to generate key presses between master/slave toons?
Are there /follow/assist macros I can use?
EvE seems to be all about the mouse clicking, is there a way to key bind abilities and attributes to limit the amount of clicking required?
I run with 2 screens, is it possible to drag the millions of menus off my main screen?
And finally, what are some of your set-ups out there?
Cheers :)

-Boxing in EVE is different from WoW, it is not really the same. Some people have been able to setup programs to broadcast, but generally you really dont want to broadcast often, Krom and/or RobinG might be able to explain this better.
Are there /follow/assist macros I can use?
- There are no macros built into the game, there is no such thing as a follow command due to the nature of the space environment. There are some things to assist with moving toons, like Warp Fleet or Warp Squad, but that has limited use to move people within a system. There is also an autopilot, which i generally dont use becuase i live out in 0.0 (null) space.

- EVE is all mouse/menu driven. There are some bind keys/short cut keys. Nothing major, but they are working on this to make it better for next expansion, becuase people click to much.
- Edit: The general shortcuts you will use for combat is generally going to be F1 - F5 for your first 5 hot keys, you can assign them for alt+F1-F5, and Ctrl+F1-F5 i believe. These are going to be the rows of circular activation buttons when out in space. Then i also use Ctrl+Left Click on a something to target something without have to right-click and select lock target.
I run with 2 screens, is it possible to drag the millions of menus off my main screen?
- It has been requested for the ability to do 2 screens and drag all the menus off, but unfortunately we dont have that luxury, just yet. One of the biggest issues is the cluttered UI, but youll learn to, deal with, make use of space better, and not display things not needed.
And finally, what are some of your set-ups out there?
- ill post a pic of my UI Close up, but this is my computer layout.- Computer Layout: http://thewoe.com/images/personal/myspace.png

Thanks for the reply Memo :)
In RL I use AutoCad and Sketchup a lot, both these programs give you the option of dragging the menus out of the main window onto the second screen, so I really hope they implement this in Eve.
And your setup, wow! I'll post a pic of my comfort oriented game lounge once I clean it.
I'm really getting into the game this time compared to my first crack at it- as in WoW the player driven element of the game is sucking me in, I've applied to Eve Uni to get me started.

Hey hey!
Although Meeo already covered most of your questions, as a new boxer who also plays wow, let me just add my 2 cents:
Can you dual box in a similar way in EvE as you can in WoW using Octopus to generate key presses between master/slave toons?
As Meeo already stated, no. However, I use innerspace with mouse broadcasting for Eve, and it works fabulously. Basically you broadcast a target on your main, and it pops up in the fleet window - then you have a repeater region set up for that window area, so that when you click there and target, all your guys do it together. Also when your guys are fleeted up (grouped) the leader can order the fleet to warp to specific locations or follow them in a warp. In a sense controlling their movement from one toon.

This is a very big difference between Wow and Eve - no macros. AT ALL. Also a complete lack of addons, and low customization in the UI appearance (the options for displaying things in your overview and such though are ridiculously varied however)
Boxing in Eve is a bit more difficult than boxing wow. HOWEVER - Eve is a much slower game than Wow. So far in my limited experience, unless you get one shot in your frigate or industrial coming off a gate by a stealth bomber or something, pvp isn't over in 5 seconds like in a lot of MMOs - pvp is very tactical and depends a lot on thought beforehand and fittings, and not so much on who has the fastest twitch.
I still use and enjoy keyclone for its simplicity and lack of problems for Wow, but I would highly recommend innerspace for Eve, as it offers pretty much everything you need for boxing the game effectively.

You're really going to want to use Innerspace to multibox EVE. There's one obvious reason and another reason that you'll need to send me a mail to find out about.

Thats great to hear! Eve-Uni isnt bad at all, i have some RL friends in there, but i dont really talk to them to much. If you have any questions you can usually from me in game around 22:00 to about 06:00 EVE Time. Feel free to convo me on Cirocke.
